This doesn't look good

Paramount sure has a lot of faith in him to give him the sequel after the messy job he did with ASM2. Not to mention he has never directed anything before now. I expect to see a drop in quality in this one.

Very boring choice. He is, at best, a mediocre writer. One with no directorial experience. Woo-hoo.

the saving grace with the Star Trek films was Abrams. I imagine J.J. rewrote alot in those movies.

They've gotta be slashing the the budget with this one, which is a wise move.

Because if not, this would be the most expensive live action film ever to be directed by a first-timer, wouldn't it? I think Tro Legacy might be the previous record-holder with a $170 million budget. J. J. Abrams got $150 million for Mission: Impossible III, but Star Trek into Darkness cost $185 million, so even if it is the same, it will still be the most expensie live-action film to be someone's directorial debut. Tangled had a co-director, who, I believe, hasn't directed anything before, so that'd be more expensive, but still.

Maleficent is a directorial debut, so it might be the record holder.

Or 47 Ronin, lol.

Transcendence is rumored to be more expensive than its initial 100m budget

Yeah, STID was mostly well-received by mainstream audiences, but it ended up feeling so inconsequential, I can't see this film not having another drop in box office, unless Star Trek 50th Anniversary Fever is a big thing when it opens.

Yep, third will likely drop even further and they'll reboot again (assuming the cast is only signed for three).

I know he's a little...questionable...at the moment, but I wouldn't be shocked if Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie were approached again (they were developing a new Trek project prior to Abrams).

Post Re: Roberto Orci to Direct Star Trek 3
This is the best they could do under the circumstances, that would also keep the tone of the franchise consistent with what has come before. I'm glad to Orci and Kurtzman have split, so they can each give their full attention to their respective franchises. Juggling so many at a time must be tough, so I'll give them a pass on some of their recent mediocre (or bad when it comes to C&A) work.

I still enjoy STID and think that it works as a standalone movie. However, a year removed has taken my fanboy goggles off and shown that it really was a poor decision to remake Wrath of Kahn. Yeah Kahn is the only famous Trek villain, but the first advertised itself as NOT YOUR FATHERS STAR TREK and the second didn't continue that. Not advertising Kahn's presence contradicted the whole point to bringing in the character in the first place. AND they gave JJ Abrams the Nolan treatment, allowing him to make a passion project in between franchise films. Did that loyalty pay off when JJ got a sexier job opportunity? Absolutely not. What a mess it was.

JJs my boy, but all that is really messed up thinking back on it. He's like Lego Batman, except Lego Batman came back...

The story is that Orci basically sabotaged every other director Paramount was interested in (including Cornish) by telling them he was going to be the one calling the shots. I wouldn't be surprised if it's true at all.

I do wonder if some of Orci's insane conspiracy theories might get covered by the press a little more now. Surely that's some bad press Paramount does not want.

Here is an informative analysis of Roberto Orci's suitability to direct Star Trek - - and here's a somewhat angrier analysis - - and finally an attempt to reconcile Orci's beliefs as a known 9/11 truther with his script for STiD.

If you're not a Star Trek fan or don't have time to read the links, here's the TLDR version: the franchise is fucked.

The franchise will be fine, but this incarnation of it will not be.

We're only a few years away from the 30th anniversary of TNG. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they rebooted that as a television series following ST3.

I feel bad for Orci. All of these shootings/false flag operations and the Bergdahl thing must be forcing constant script rewrites.

Rumor is they want Edgar Wright. I hope they can get him. It would be a good thing for the franchise.

I like this new Trek incarnation. I think what hurt most was the ridiculous gap between one and two. There's no excuse for a sequel to a 200 million dollar film to not be made and ready in two years.

I'm still interested and will definitely watch a third and hopefully it retains the gross of STID.

I think three years is a perfect gap. Two can lead to rushed sequels, see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Iron Man 2.

Three years worked out well for Captain America 2, The Dark Knight, X2, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 etc.
