Take a look at some of the tear-downs of phones to get a good feel for the cost of the internal components, and what the actual markup for the brand is (hint, iPhone has the most markup).
I have the Moto X right now. Lower quality components, yes, but in general iPhone's run more smoothly than Android (which took until Project Butter to be even remotely smooth). It's how the phone uses it's components, and iOS definitely doesn't need the top specs to run efficiently. Don't think the same is true of Android. Functionality, I agree. It definitely lacks some things that might be okay for the average phone user but not for a power user/tech nerd (like integration between apps). I get most of what I want having a jailbroken iPhone, but those features should come out of the box. In terms of OS, that's just a preference. I don't think iOS is shitty at all. And in terms of having better, more quality apps, iOS beats Android all day. Developers give priority to iOS 9/10 times for release dates (Mailbox JUST came to Android this week - iOS has had it since Feb 2013) and definitely put more time into it. And it makes sense, since developers only need to optimize their apps for a handful of devices with iOS while it's much more difficult to optimize the app for every Android phone out there. But still...even something as simple as checking Instagram or Facebook is just much more enjoyable on iOS. In my opinion, at least.

wut.
You last sentence doesn't even make sense. Instagram/Facebook are literally the same on both phones. To differentiate makes no sense.
Also, the iPhone not having a back button is the worst thing in the world. It's really, really, really awful.

Re: Samsung vs Apple vs HTC vs Sony vs Nokia vs LG
Having had an iPhone for the past 5 years, moving to Android was a welcome experience. I found iOS to be extremely buggy, I hated the way it did notifications, I was constantly running into barriers of the walled garden, and found the phone to be a bit too small.
I may jump to a Nexus 5 soon.

Camera is a component I never get value from, just don't use it very often.

It get what you mean, but practically speaking zingy has a point. The apps are inherently the same but the smoothness with which you can use them is much better on the iPhone, particularly since iOS 7. It's hard to explain without trialing it for at least a few weeks yourself, but basic functions are a lot snappier to use. The same opinion is consistently voiced by unbiased techno critics as well. Yup. It's something you need to see side-by-side and through extensive use. I didn't think it was a "thing" prior to switching to Android, but after a while, I could notice. There's design choices that developers make with iOS apps that don't get implemented in Android equivalent (or much later). And yes, I agree that since iOS 7, it's increasingly apparent. It's a minor thing, and totally not a deal breaker by any means, but it's there. And just as a personal opinion, I've found majority of apps to look better on iOS when they are different. I can't think of a non-Google app that I felt had a better design and experience on Android. It was either the same or slightly worse. This shows Instagram's minor differences back in November. Don't know how it looks on Android now. http://www.wired.com/2013/11/instagram- ... eid-252971

Google Maps is better on Android. And really, that's the main app I use. So...
