Re: Japan Box Office: Doraemon Box Office History
Every March since 1980 (except for 2005), a new Doraemon film has been released and 2014's release (the 34th in the franchise), Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon—Peko and the Exploration Party of Five, opens this weekend, celebrating Doraemon's 80th Anniversary. Past Doraemon Films:¥1.55 billion ($11.9 million) - Doraemon 1: Nobita's Dinosaur (1980) ¥1.75 billion ($14.4 million) - Doraemon 2: The Record of Nobita: Starblazer (1981) ¥1.22 billion ($9.8 million) - Doraemon 3: Nobita and the Haunts of Evil (1982) ¥1.00 billion ($8.1 million) - Doraemon 4: Nobita's Monstrous Underwater Castle (1983) ¥1.65 billion ($13.5 million) - Doraemon 5: Nobita's Adventure into Underworld (1984) ¥1.20 billion ($9.6 million) - Doraemon 6: Nobita's Little Star Universe (1985) ¥1.30 billion ($11.1 million) - Doraemon 7: Nobita and the Steel Troops (1986) ¥1.50 billion ($13.1 million) - Doraemon 8: Nobita and the Dinosaur Knights (1987) ¥1.36 billion ($12.1 million) - Doraemon 9: Nobita's Parallel Journey to the West (1988) ¥2.02 billion ($17.8 million) - Doraemon 10: Nobita and the Birth of Japan (1989) ¥1.91 billion ($16.5 million) - Doraemon 11: Nobita and the Animal Planet (1990) ¥1.80 billion ($15.8 million) - Doraemon 12: Nobita and the Dorabian Nights (1991) ¥1.68 billion ($14.8 million) - Doraemon 13: Nobita and the Kingdom of the Clouds (1992) ¥1.65 billion ($14.8 million) - Doraemon 14: Nobita and the Tin-Plate Labyrinth (1993) ¥1.35 billion ($13.1 million) - Doraemon 15: Nobita and the Fantastical Three Musketeers (1994) ¥1.30 billion ($15.6 million) - Doraemon 16: Nobita's Genius Diary (1995) ¥1.60 billion ($14.9 million) - Doraemon 17: Nobita and the Galactic Express (1996) ¥2.00 billion ($17.9 million) - Doraemon 18: Nobita's Adventure in the Clockwork City(1997) ¥2.10 billion ($18.5 million) - Doraemon 19: Nobita's South Sea Adventure (1998) ¥2.00 billion ($17.9 million) - Doraemon 20: Nobita's Adventure: Drifts in the Universe (1999) ¥3.05 billion ($29.0 million) - Doraemon 21: Nobita and the Legend of the Sun King (2000) ¥3.00 billion ($26.7 million) - Doraemon 22: Nobita and the Winged Braves (2001) ¥2.31 billion ($17.6 million) - Doraemon 23: Nobita and the Robot Kingdom (2002) ¥2.54 billion ($22.6 million) - Doraemon 24: Nobita and the Wind Wizard (2003)Recent Doraemon Films:Opening Weekend ¥ ($) -> Final Gross ¥ ($) - Film (Year)¥416,809,107 ($3.8 million) -> ¥3.05 billion ($28.7 million) - Doraemon 25: Wannyan Space Time Odyssey (2004) ¥433,268,207 ($3.7 million) -> ¥3.28 billion ($27.6 million) - Doraemon 26: Nobita's Dinosaur (2006) ¥559,412,464 ($4.8 million) -> ¥3.54 billion ($30.1 million) - Doraemon 27: Nobita's New Adventure into the Underworld (2007) ¥517,050,157 ($5.1 million) -> ¥3.37 billion ($32.1 million) - Doraemon 28: Nobita and the Green Giant Legend (2008) ¥372,892,608 ($3.8 million) -> ¥2.45 billion ($25.2 million) - Doraemon 29: The New Record of Nobita (2009) ¥553,483,841 ($6.2 million) -> ¥3.16 billion ($33.6 million) - Doraemon 30: Nobita's Great Battle of the Mermaid King (2010) ¥446,318,074 ($5.4 million) -> ¥2.46 billion ($31.2 million) - Doraemon 31: Nobita and the New Steel Troops (2011) ¥552,617,102 ($6.9 million) -> ¥3.62 billion ($46.0 million) - Doraemon 32: Nobita and the Island of Miracles (2012) ¥667,291,740 ($7.2 million) -> ¥3.98 billion ($43.2 million) - Doraemon 33: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (2013)The Doraemon movie franchise became the Most-Attended movie franchise in history last year, with total admissions reaching 101.81 million. This number surpassed Godzilla's 99.25 million admissions. And the movie franchise is also the second Highest-Grossing movie franchises ever with ¥71.72 billion (~$671 million), behind just Harry Potter at ¥96.57 billion (~$903 million). Last year's film holds all the major franchise records including Opening Weekend, as well as Highest-Grossing/Most-Attended film, so it'll be a real challenge for this year's release to match or come within close range of it, in my opinion. However, Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five will still likely deliver one of the bigger openings of the year this weekend, likely over ¥500 million, and a total around ¥3.5 billion (2014 Top 10 candidate). Although this is the 80th Anniversary film, so... maybe it can challenge the franchise record and be the first film to reach ¥4 billion.

Re: Japan Box Office: Doraemon's 80th Anniversary Film Openi
Weekend Forecast [03/08-09] [Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five]01 (--) ¥620 million ($6.1 million), Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five (Toho) NEW 02 (--) ¥210 million ($2.0 million), Silver Spoon: The Movie (Toho) NEW03 (01) ¥190 million ($1.8 million), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) Week 2 04 (02) ¥135 million ($1.3 million), The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 4 05 (04) ¥95 million ($930,000), The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 12 06 (03) ¥75 million ($730,000), Kiki's Delivery Service (Toei) Week 2 07 (--) ¥70 million ($680,000), The Great, Shurarabon (Asmik Ace/Toei) NEW08 (05) ¥35 million ($340,000), I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 6 09 (06) ¥30 million ($290,000), Kamen Teacher (Showgate) Week 3 10 (08) ¥30 million ($280,000), Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 5 >Another March, another Doraemon film. It's the first of the annual animated trifecta that distributor Toho established in 1998. Doraemon every March, Detective Conan every April, and Pokemon every July. And together, they regularly gross ~¥10 billion (~$100 million) every year.
Doraemon 34 has some really, really strong early ticket sales, and for a film with such a strong child/family audience, this is a great sign. Pretty much all of its showtimes until after 4/5PM are either nearing or over half-capacity. I don't think it'll beat last year's record opening (¥667 million), but it may very well go over ¥600 million (~$6 million) based on the excellent ticket sales so far today to deliver what will be one of the biggest openings of 2014.
>Silver Spoon burned off a little demand from the fans since it opened on Friday, and ticket sales yesterday looked alright at best. It should be able to open high enough to give The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug a run at 2nd place for the weekend, though.
>12 Years a Slave opens this weekend via Gaga at 49 locations, and coming off of its Best Picture win this past weekend, it could earn enough to make the bottom of the Top 10. The ~¥30/35 million that'll it will need is certainly reasonable. It does, however, probably have the least amount of interested amongst other Best Picture winners in a very long time.

Re: Japan Box Office: Doraemon's 80th Anniversary Film Openi
Toho Cinemas Saturday Admissions (03/08) Admissions [# of showings] - Film (Week of Release)
42,541 [316] - Doraemon 34 (NEW) 8,953 [308] - Silver Spoon (NEW) 8,951 (27% 3D) [251] - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Week 2) 8,731 [240] - The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Week 4) 7,621 [119] - 12 Years a Slave (NEW) 5,125 [126] - Kamen Teacher (Week 3) 4,024 [176] - The Eternal Zero (Week 12) 3,869 [182] - Kiki's Delivery Service (Week 2) 3,619 [258] - The Great, Shurarabon (NEW) 2,535 [37] - The IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Week 7) 2,194 [116] - Kick Ass 2 (Week 3) 2,063 [105] - I Want to Hold You (Week 6) 1,793 [23] - Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Week 5) 1,251 [38] - The Wolf of Wall Street (Week 6)
Doreamon opened with the most admissions at Toho Cinemas on Saturday since Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (51,000) back in December. And Sunday will be even bigger as it usually is for any film that skews towards a kids/family audience. 500,000 admissions and ¥550 million+ ($5.5 million) over the weekend looks likely, and it'll probably push towards the 550,000+ and perhaps ¥600 million+ ($6 million) mark.
If it does more than 539,000 admissions over the weekend, it'll be the biggest opening (in admissions) since The Wind Rises back in July 2013.
Not bad for Silver Spoon, but it won't be making ¥200 million with these admissions and will probably lose to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in gross over the weekend, too.
12 Years a Slave may look like it's doing very well, and it is at Toho Cinemas, but most of its 49 theaters are Toho Cinemas so the ranking will be much lower on the national level.

Re: Japan Box Office: Doraemon's 80th Anniversary Film Openi
I doubt it. Both Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled co-existed with a Doreamon film in release. In general, competition doesn't really hurt many films in Japan's market. You can often see many films, animated or live-action, targeting similar audiences perform perfectly fine together. And Spring Break at the end of the month allows for a lot of room for various films to perform fine together, too.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (Doraemon)
Weekend Estimates [03/08-09] [Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five]01 (--) ¥602 million ($6.0 million), 0, Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five (Toho) NEW02 (01) ¥180 million ($1.7 million), -42%, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) Week 2 03 (02) ¥142 million ($1.3 million), -36%, The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 4 04 (--) ¥119 million ($1.1 million), 0, Silver Spoon: The Movie (Toho) NEW05 (03) ¥79 million ($780,000), -38%, Kiki's Delivery Service (Toei) Week 2 06 (04) ¥72 million ($700,000), -43%, The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 12 07 (06) ¥49 million ($470,000), -18%, Kamen Teacher (Showgate) Week 3 08 (--) ¥47 million ($450,000), 0, The Great, Shurarabon (Asmik Ace/Toei) NEW09 (08) ¥43 million ($410,000), -11%, Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 5 10 (05) ¥36 million ($340,000), -41%, I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 6 - ¥24 million ($230,000), -52%, Kick Ass 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 3 - ¥15 million ($140,000), -64%, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Paramount) Week 4 >Celebrating 80 years of Doraemon, Doraemon: Nobita's New Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration of Five is estimated to have opened to ¥602 million with about 537,000 admissions over the weekend. This would give it the second best opening in the Doraemon franchise (9.8% behind the record opening of last year's film, the only other Doraemon film to have opened over ¥600 million), and the fourth best opening at the box-office overall since last Summer.
The opening will allow it to easily exceed ¥3 billion (~$30 million), and ¥3.5 billion+ (~$35-40 million) is pretty likely. ¥3.99 billion is needed to become the top grossing Doraemon film (very difficult); ¥3.63 billion to become the 2nd top grossing film; and ¥3.55 billion to be the 3rd top grossing.
>Silver Spoon is a disappointment. It doesn't appear to be attracting anyone outside of its core fanbase given a debut just under 100,000 admissions would result in 500/600,000, more or less the same amount of volumes each manga volume sells.
>Some of the drops for the holdovers are pretty rough, but last weekend was slightly inflated due to the 1st of the month (nationwide discount day) falling on Saturday.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking (Doraemon 34)
Weekend Ranking [03/08-09]
01 (--) Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five (Toho) DEBUT 02 (01) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) Week 2 03 (02) The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji (Toho) Week 4 04 (--) Silver Spoon (Toho) DEBUT 05 (04) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 12 06 (03) Kiki's Delivery Service (Toei) Week 2 07 (--) The Great, Shurarabon (Asmik Ace/Toei) DEBUT 08 (06) Kamen Teacher (Showgate) Week 3 09 (08) Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) Week 5 10 (--) 12 Years a Slave (Gaga) DEBUT
>Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five, the 34th installment of the popular franchise, opened to ¥600,356,700 ($5.9 million) with 530,554 admissions on 361 screens. This is the second biggest opening for a Doraemon film, and the biggest so far this calendar year.
It will be aiming for a total of ¥3.5-4 billion (~$35-40 million), possibly enough for a Top 10 spot on the 2014 yearly chart. This year also marks the 80th Anniversary of the Doraemon character.
>Silver Spoon, the live-action adaptation of the popular manga/anime by Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist), saw a modest start taking in ¥121,117,900 ($1.2 million) with 98,956 admissions on 285 screens. It opened on Friday (rare for a domestic film), and its 3-day total reached ¥160 million ($1.5 million). Toho is saying it'll reach ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million), but that's incredibly unlikely. ¥1 billion (~$10 million) will be the real goal here, and a pretty hard one, too.
>The Great, Shurarabon wasn't so great. The film only earned ¥58,079,000 ($568,000) with 43,863 admissions on 202 screens. It'll be aiming for a ¥300-350 million (~$3-3.5 million) total
>12 Years a Slave opened on 43 screens and saw an impressive debut of ¥40,547,800 ($396,000) with 32,431 admissions thanks to its Best Picture win at the Academy Awards last week. It's hard to say where it be heading total wise, but it should enjoy a healthy run.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking / Charts Updated
Don't One Piece movies open big and then don't have as great legs? How many movies they have had for it? I think a few more movies and they will find a way in Top 10.
BTW HP original movies were really huge in Japan.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking / Charts Updated
One Piece [12 Films] is really close ranking 11th: ¥26.13 billion ($249 million) / ~20.80 million admissions, 2000-
Umizaru [4 Films] is also really pretty close with: ¥24.21 billion ($265 million) / 17.92 million admissions, 2004-
The last two One Piece films have been huge, representing 45% of the franchise's total box-office since the creator has worked on them. It just needs another film with Oda working on it, likely to be released in Dec. 2016, to enter the Top 10.
Toho hasn't announced a fifth Umizaru film, but it's likely to happen in a couple years (2015 is also possible). It'll probably be billed as the final one, and given the past 3 have earned ¥7/8 billion and over 5 million admissions each, the franchise is likely to earn a lower Top 10 ranking after it's released.
There is also talk about the Matrix franchise continuing. I'm pretty sure that'll bomb/disappoint Hobbit/Terminator 4 style given how far the third film dropped from the first two, and its legs were incredibly bad, but if a new trilogy would spawn somehow the franchise could rise a couple spots perhaps.
One franchise that is possibly ranked 9th/10th already may be Kamen Rider. Toei releases 3 Kamen Rider films every year now (Dec., Apr., and Aug.), and there have been 46 theatrical releases (though one of those films was split into 3 different releases over one Summer) since 1971. And they've regularly grossed ¥1-2 billion / ~1-1.5 million admissions since at least the early/mid 2000s. I have no data before 1980, and data is limited from 1981-1997, too, so it's tough to put together a franchise total.

Re: Japan Box Office: All-Time Franchises
Here is an expanded list. And before someone mentions The Terminator franchise, it's right below Back to the Future in Revenue (16th) and could be outside the Top 20 in admissions with it's R-rating causing its avg. ticket price to be pretty high. And James Bond is also not forgotten. Some of the early 80s films did ok numbers, and probably 70s films too, but the mid 80s releases up to Casino Royale didn't even earn ¥1 billion.
And Kamen Rider is very likely somewhere in the Top 15, possibly at the bottom of the Top 10, but there isn't enough data on many of the 1970/1980 films.
