Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast [02/01-02]
An (or the) exception due to a walking, talking teddy bear. :P It is the highest-grossing imported comedy since 1992 (Home Alone 2), afterall. And it was only picked up late in 2012 after its success everywhere. The success of The Hangover films in the US and abroad helped them find a distributor in Japan, too, but they barely made anything.

11 (08) ¥34 million ($320,000), -39%, Judge! (Shochiku) Week 4

13 (09) ¥12 million ($110,000), -76%, The Escape Plan (Gaga) Week 4

The Eternal Zero continues its crazy run and celebrates its 7th-consecutive week atop the box-office with one of the biggest 7th weekends ever. It's only down ~30% in it's 7th weekend compared to its opening weekend. And its 2nd weekend still remains its weakest weekend to date.

Weekly Breakdown:
1st Weekend: ¥542 million ($5.3 million)
2nd Weekend: ¥372 million ($3.6 million), -31%, ¥1.61 billion ($15.5 million)
3rd Weekend: ¥532 million ($5.2 million), +43%, ¥3.20 billion ($30.9 million)
4th Weekend: ¥468 million ($4.5 million), -12%, ¥4.16 billion ($40.2 million)
5th Weekend: ¥401 million ($3.9 million), -14%, ¥5.17 billion ($49.7 million)
6th Weekend: ¥375 million ($3.7 million), -6%, ¥5.96 billion ($57.6 million)
7th Weekend: ¥383 million ($3.8 million), +2%, ¥6.70 billion ($65.0 million) *Estimate*

Thor: The Dark World is looking at a 30-35% increase over the first film's opening weekend.

American Hustle's estimate is very much an estimate. With a theater count just over 100, it could change a lot tomorrow.

And THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE still can't be tracked due to such a limited release, but it should have earned ~¥70-80 million ($700-800,000) in its second weekend, so expect it to come in 7th/8th for the weekend.

6 - The Sixth Sense [Oct. 30-31 to Dec. 04-05] (1999)
6 - The Matrix [Sept. 11-12 to Oct. 16-17] (1999)

Next week's main competition is Tiger & Bunny: The Rising and Rush. I really doubt either of them is a real threat to ending The Eternal Zero's #1 streak, though, so 8 weeks on top looks incredibly likely. Honestly, there's a solid chance we see 10 or more consecutive weeks on top.

Weekend Ranking [02/01-02]

01 (01) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 7
02 (--) I Want to Hold You (Toho) DEBUT
03 (--) Thor: The Dark World (Disney) DEBUT
04 (--) The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) DEBUT

05 (02) Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 4
06 (03) THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 2
07 (04) The Little House (Shochiku) Week 2
08 (06) Gravity (Warner Bros.) Week 8
09 (07) Zyuten Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! (Toei) Week 3
10 (06) Black Butler (Warner Bros.) Week 3

For the first time during The Eternal Zero's run, estimates were high. Though it still won its 7th-consecutive weekend with a minimal drop (and an increase in admissions).

>The Eternal Zero grossed ¥333,763,200 ($3.3 million) with 295,861 admissions in its 7th weekend frame. This is down 11% from last weekend in gross, and up 3% in admissions due to the discount Saturday this weekend. After 44 days of release, it has grossed over ¥6.6 billion ($64 million) with 5.44 million admissions.

Weekly Breakdown:
1st Weekend: ¥542 million ($5.3 million)
2nd Weekend: ¥372 million ($3.6 million), -31%, ¥1.61 billion ($15.5 million)
3rd Weekend: ¥532 million ($5.2 million), +43%, ¥3.20 billion ($30.9 million)
4th Weekend: ¥468 million ($4.5 million), -12%, ¥4.16 billion ($40.2 million)
5th Weekend: ¥401 million ($3.9 million), -14%, ¥5.17 billion ($49.7 million)
6th Weekend: ¥375 million ($3.7 million), -6%, ¥5.96 billion ($57.6 million)
7th Weekend: ¥334 million ($3.3 million), -11%, ¥6.60+ billion ($64.0 million+)

>I Want to Hold Your Hand came closer than any other film from the past seven weeks to dethrone Zero, but in the end it had to settle for #2. Playing on 311 screens, the film grossed ¥276,102,650 ($2.7 million) with 246,094 admissions. A nice start, though films that open on a discount weekend are often a bit frontloaded, so I doubt it can reach ¥2 billion ($20 million). A finish of ¥1.7/¥1.8 billion ($16/17 million) however is nice enough.

>Thor: The Dark World comes in at #3. The film earned ¥187,085,300 ($1.8 million) with 144,456 admissions on 627 screens. The sequel pulled off an impressive 43% increase over the first film, and will come close to achieving the ¥1 billion ($10 million) mark.

>The Wolf of Wall Street ranks #4 over the weekend, but it actually edged out Thor in admissions. The new Scorsese/DiCaprio film grossed ¥167,894,500 ($1.6 million) with 146,160 admissions on 242 screens. Considering the fairly low screen count, this is a solid debut and it too should gross close to the ¥1 billion ($10 million) mark. I expect it will exceed the mark and beat Thor in the end.

>American Hustle managed to rank 10th for the weekend in admissions on 118 screens, but since Gravity is outside the Top 10 in admissions (11th) but 8th in gross due to its high 3D share, it actually missed the Top 10. No weekend numbers are available yet, however, but estimates were certainly well-off on this one.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Ranking
Generally just the #1 movie and the Top 10 openers have their grosses/admissions revealed on Monday evening (4-6PM JST). There are several sites that post the Top 10, though movie.walkerplus.com typically updates first.

For the rest of the Top 10, and sometimes films below that reach certain milestones, cinematoday.jp releases most of them along with total grosses/admissions and such. They publish their box-office article on Tuesday, though the time varies a lot (~1-9PM JST). You just have to check their news page.

For the full Top 10 grosses/admissions, and some films below, only bunkatsushin releases that data on Monday/Tuesday. They require an outrageous membership fee, however. We only buy a monthly membership due to the cost when major films are in release (usually March/April, July/Aug), and moviewalkerplus and similar sites, along with cinematoday provide the majority of the numbers anyway so it's not worth spending several hundred (USD equivalent) on them annually.

Do you have actuals for Escape Plan yet? I'm guessing it should be up to around $6.5m by now..

Thanks! If only BOM had exchange rates to rely on...

According to BOM, Escape Plan is not in the Top 18. True or another BOM oversight?

Yeah, BOM isn't that reliable. They didn't even include the #2 film I Want To Hold You, the best opener this past weekend, and said "Thor weak in 2nd". Thor: The Dark World really debuted in 3rd, though it saw a 43% increase over the first film so I wouldn't call it "weak" by any means. And forgetting to include openers on their charts has been a major issue with them in recent months.

The Escape Plan dropped 74% thanks to several new openers causing it to lose many screens, and earned ¥12,934,248 ($126,806), bringing its total up to ¥679,472,850 ($6,654,974).

May 3rd - My Little Nightmare: The Movie (Toho)

Yeah, it was released last weekend by Nikkatsu in 16 theaters. I haven't seen any figures reported. Some key locations it's playing at includes Umeda (Toho Cinemas), Sekai (Movix Cinemas), and Toyohashi (United Cinemas). Most of the other theaters are smaller chains located in urban areas.

More than half of the 16 locations are getting rid of it either on Feb. 14th/21st, though, and the fact that it is has a R-18 rating (equivalent of NC-17 in the US) likely means it won't be expanding. And it takes a lot to earn a R-18 rating in Japan. Compared to the US, the vast majority of films that are NC-17 get an R rating instead, R = PG-13, PG-13 = PG, PG =G in Japan, so I'm curious to know what it's about. :P The few reviews I came across are lukewarm, too. If I come across any figures for the film, though, I'll be sure to tell you (or you can ask again later on).

And you should post more!

Weekend Forecast [02/08-09]

01 (01) ¥230 million ($2.2 million), The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 8
02 (02) ¥210 million ($2.0 million), I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 2
03 (--) ¥120 million ($1.1 million), Rush (Gaga) NEW
04 (--) ¥110 million ($1.0 million), Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) NEW

05 (07) ¥105 million ($1.0 million), THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 3
06 (03) ¥100 million ($980,000), Thor: The Dark World (Disney) Week 2
07 (--) ¥95 million ($930,000), Buddha 2 (Toei) NEW
08 (04) ¥90 million ($880,000), The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 2
09 (05) ¥60 million ($580,000), Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 5
10 (06) ¥55 million ($530,000), The Little House (Shochiku) Week 3

Tough weekend to forecast due to the weather situation. There is a lot of snow falling across Japan today, so I'd expecting big drops overall except for IDOLM@STER (which should actually increase due to all its sold out stage greetings this weekend), and for the openers to see subdued debuts. Advance ticket sales are dismal everywhere this morning. Films that skew older will be hurt the most, which might give I Want to Hold You a second opportunity to dethrone The Eternal Zero which has reigned atop the box-office since December.

Also, The Eternal Zero exceeded ¥6.8 billion ($66 million) with 5.58 million admissions on Wednesday, its 47th day of release, and should be up to ¥7.1/7.2 billion ($70 million) and ~5.8 million admissions come Sunday.

The snow (heaviest snowfall in over 20 years) definitely effected the box-office yesterday. Everything is down 60-80% compared to last week, so hopefully with the weather clearing up for Sunday we see some healthy rebounds.

The Eternal Zero winning its 8th-consecutive week atop the box-office looks likely, but it's not so far ahead that tomorrow's unpredictable Sunday couldn't change things.

The weather didn't really let up until late Sunday, but a few films "rebounded" somewhat. People just weren't going to go out in such a mess, though.

These are by far the worst drops I've ever seen. They're even worse than the weekend of the Tohoku Earthquake almost 3 years ago since the record snowfall effected a much larger area (2/3 of the country), including Tokyo which didn't receive too much of the Earthquake's impact. A dozen people died due to the snow this weekend, and 1,300 were injured with over 40,000 still without power.

It feels odd typing The Eternal Zero in the 2nd place position, but I Want to Hold You edged it out by 85 admissions at Toho Cinemas. It's way too close to call which film earned more here, and the weekend estimates having Zero just ahead by ¥8 million ($78,000) so it may have earned its 8th-consecutive week on top.

And of course all the openers did very, very poorly due to the weather situation. Buddha 2 especially with the admissions at Toho suggesting it may have dropped 90/95% from the original, but it's hard to say at the moment.

The Eternal Zero twitter is claiming the film achieved its 8th-consecutive week atop the box-office! The film also exceeded ¥7 billion (about $70 million) over the weekend in the face of the worst snow storm in over 20 years.

The Wind Rises (coincidentally, both films are sad WW2 stories featuring aircrafts) achieved 8-consecutive weeks in 1st place last year, but before that, you have to go back 10 years to Howl's Moving Castle and Bayside Shakedown 2 for a better run on top for a domestic film:

Most-Consecutive Weeks at #1 [1998-]
16 - Spirited Away [July 21-22 to Nov. 03-04] (2001)
14 - Armageddon [Dec. 12-13 to Mar. 13-14] (1998-1999)
10 - Avatar [Dec. 26-27 to Feb. 27-28] (2009-2010)
9 - Howl's Moving Castle [Nov. 20-21 to Jan. 15-16] (2004-2005)
9 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! [July 19-20 to Sept. 13-14] (2003)
9 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets [Nov. 23-24 to Jan. 18-19] (2002-2003)
9 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone [Dec. 01-02 to Jan. 26-27] (2001-2002)
9 - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace [July 10-11 to Sept. 04-05] (1999)
8 - The Eternal Zero [Dec. 21-22 to Feb. 08-09 so far] (2013-2014)
8 - The Wind Rises [July 20-21 to Sept. 07-08] (2013)
7 - Alice in Wonderland [Apr. 17-18 to May 29-30] (2010)
7 - Hero [Sept. 08-09 to Oct. 20-21] (2007)
7 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King [Feb. 14-15 to Mar. 27-28] (2004)
7 - Spider-Man [May 11-12 to June 22-23] (2002)
6 - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides [May 21-22 to June 25-26] (2011)
6 - Umizaru: The Last Message [Sept. 18-19 to Oct. 23-24] (2010)
6 - 20th Century Boys: The Last Chapter [Aug. 29-30 to Oct. 03-04] (2009)
6 - Ponyo [July 19-20 to Aug. 23-24] (2008)
6 - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe [Mar. 03-04 to Apr. 08-09] (2006)
6 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [Nov. 26-27 to Jan. 07-08] (2005-2006)
6 - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith [July 09-10 to Aug. 13-14] (2005)
6 - Monsters, Inc. [Mar. 09-10 to Apr. 13-14] (2002)
6 - The Sixth Sense [Oct. 30-31 to Dec. 04-05] (1999)
6 - The Matrix [Sept. 11-12 to Oct. 16-17] (1999)

Can it remain on top for 10-consecutive weeks or until March? It's possible.

Weekend Ranking [02/08-09]

01 (01) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 8
02 (02) I Want to Hold You (Toho) Week 2
03 (--) Tiger & Bunny: The Rising (Shochiku) DEBUT
04 (--) Rush (Gaga) DEBUT

05 (04) The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Week 2
06 (03) Thor: The Dark World (Disney) Week 2
07 (07) THE IDOLM@STER MOVIE (Aniplex) Week 3
08 (05) Trick: The Last Stage (Toho) Week 5
09 (06) The Little House (Shochiku) Week 3
10 (08) Zyuten Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! (Toei) Week 4

With the worst natural disaster (1,300 reported injured due to the weekend snowstorm) to hit Japan since the Tohoku Earthquake almost 3 years ago, the entire box-office saw a severe drop for the weekend down 58% from last weekend. Obviously it was nowhere as deadly, but it still prevented half of the country from leaving their homes.

>The Eternal Zero rules once again with its 8th-consecutive week on top, dropping 48%, to earn ¥171,390,900 ($1.7 million) with 128,392 admissions. Its 51-day cume is now ¥7,097,070,000 ($68.5 million) and 5.78 million admissions.

>Tiger & Bunny: The Rising edged out Rush as the weekends top opener, taking in ¥130,479,900 ($1.3 million) and 73,716 admissions on only 94 screens. This number is quite impressive actually, much lower than if the snow storm hadn't hit this weekend, but it's on par with the opening of the first film despite that and it'll without a doubt outgross its predecessor due to the massively deflated opening.

>Rush opens in 3rd place on 629 screens to ¥84,920,600 ($830,000) and 65,688 admissions. This is without a doubt a disappointing number, and it would have opened well over the ¥100 million (~$1 million) mark but given the weather situation, it's understandable and legs will more than likely be very strong.

>And just outside the Top 10 (#11), Gravity exceeded the ¥3 billion milestone with ¥3,019,010,000 ($29.1 million) and 1.92 million admissions after 9 weeks in release. Its run is slowing down, but if it can win big at the Oscars next month, there is still a chance it can reach ¥4 billion (~$40 million).

Since the weekend drops are comparable to those of the Tohoku Earthquake weekend, I expect most films will remain flat or see small increases next weekend like in 2011. Legs for all the films that opened the weekend before or during the Tohoku Earthquake were quite exceptional following the disaster and recovered quite well. Many films are already reaching half-capacity or better at several locations across the country, too.
