Post Re: Watchmen
Watchmen had some great and memorable visuals, as well as an interesting concept, and it was good to see an adult themed superhero(ish) movie. However, it was FAR too long for the type of movie it was, and felt very uneven. The story wasn't cohesive and didn't flow smoothly at all.

Of course, I watched the 3+ hour long director's cut on Blu-Ray (never saw it in the theaters), so perhaps the theatrical version with 25 less minutes was a bit tighter and better? Although, I have to believe it was still too long at that.

With some serious editing and smoother storytelling, this could have been a really good 2 hour movie, but as it is there is a lot of missed potential.

I have to give it a B.

The graphic novel of Watchmen is a wonderful read and one of the best I've ever read. Now I wasn't expecting Watchmen to be absolutely perfect but atleast be faithful and yet also be its own seperate entry. The movie though ended up being nothing short of a complete copy. I felt like I was just reading the novel again. Outside of Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach, the actors feel like they are reading straight off the script and don't add much emotion to their characters. The film's pacing is unbelievably off and gets annoying time and time again. The film could of also done fine with about 20-25 minutes cut off and no slow motion! The film does a good job though in capturing the action and horror of the era which is really its only brightpoint. It's not the adaptation I was looking for. *

Loved this in the theater (I think I saw it 3 times, wow) but I just recently re-watched this (the director's cut for the first time) and wasn't as in love with it as I was. There's a lot of great scenes but it's a very uneven film.

I remember when I first saw this in theatres and really enjoying it. I appreciated it being different and more ambitious than most superhero movies and it definitely delivers on it's HARD R-rating.

However, I don't think it holds up too well in repeat viewings once the pacing issues become more obvious and outside of Rorschach and The Comedian you really don't care much about the other characters.

The VISUAL EFFECTS are on point though.

This doesn't hold up on second viewing. It was still great, but not "A" great like I thought the first time I watched it. Good concept, good violence, gets bogged down a little with physiology, but I do like the end-of-the-world fear. Snyder is a great director, for sure.

B/B+
