Post Italy Box Office
Yeah, this is a thread about Italian box office. :disgust:
The peculiarity of BO runs in Italy, the upcoming openings of Eclipse and TS3, a nice amount of free time and the atomic weight of mercury being higher than 200 are certainly important, but they aren't the factors that made me start this thing.
The reason is called Corpse :P I hope you're happy now xD

Those are the official numbers...but it's not like they're very reliable. When Titanic was in theatres, Cinetel (the company responsible of BO survey) got information from from around 2/3 of the theatres (66%), now it gets the BO data from 6 theatres out of 7 (85%). Meaning the actual gross for Titanic is around 63M, The Lion King's real cume is close to 30M, ecc ecc...while Alice's number is pretty accurate and should only be increased by a few millions.

All those unknown films with weird titles are Italian comedies...and most of them are depressingly awful. -_-

And if you want to know the best OD's and OW's...ask Archangel :P

10) IL SEGRETO DEI SUOI OCCHI € 63.737 -57% 72/885 € 621.735

Summer = wasteland :wacko:
Not a single PTA above 1000 euros, and all movies combine for a weekend gross slightly above 1M.
The big drops are due to last weekend being inflated by bad weather (which often helps movies more than holidays o.O).

Tomorrow there’s going to be Eclipse, and 9 days after it’s TS3’s turn.
I’m sceptical about releasing Toy Story 3 in the middle of July. The previous 2 Potters have been released in the same weekend and both had pretty good, though not excellent, performances. But without HP’s huge fanbase and rushout factor and considering many theatres are closed in August, I’m afraid the new Pixar movie won’t reach the levels of Nemo, Madagascar and Shrek.
Eclipse on the other hand should be fine. Huge 5-day opening, possibily above 10M, followed by an implosion. The crazy weekdays may push it beyond New Moon’s 16.4M gross.

My prediction for Eclipse: 3.5OD/4.0 (3-day)/9.0 (5-day)

What year did Cinetel begin reporting for 85% of the territory?

And it is curious how Disney/Pixar mostly abandoned the platform release for this year's film. It's worked very well for them in the past, I wouldn't have expected them to risk that success on their Toy Story franchise. On the other hand, perhaps it's the one who would manage the best if something did go wrong in some markets with the release date changes.

One question though do you know how much were the grosses for TS1 and TS2 in Italy? specially the re-releases that happened last September-October?

It was sub-60% till 1995, then it started to increase. It's a gradual (and perhaps constant) rise, for example in 2003 the percentage was around 80%. It probably became 85% 2/3 years ago.

The best release date for an animated film probably is the end of August: weather isn't a problem anymore, weekdays are still strong and competition isn't too fierce. Disney/Pixar certainly tried to stay away from Shrek 4 (released just at the end of August, grrr) but didn't want to await until October. Given the way movies tend to perform here, Shrek and Toy Story would have KILLED each other if released together.

Toy Story: 827.086 tickets sold (but keep in mind that Cinetel only reported for 60% of theatres), so about 8 billions £, or 4M euros
Toy Story 2: 5.040.825€
I don't even think we got the double feature in 3D last year xD

But the first Pixar movies (and 3D animated films in general, Shrek included) were all weak: A Bug's Life grossed 4.8M and Monsters Inc 6.4M. Everything changed with Nemo.

2.1M OD reported by Cinetel.

Quite disappointing I must say. I expected something at least higher than HP6's 2.4M record, with no more school or exams and considering there wasn't any World Cup match yesterday. Bah...
At least it's higher than New Moon's 1.95M opening day.

If it gets HP6's legs, it will end up with about 16M, which would be on par with New Moon. Here's hoping for some bad weather this weekend :D

The final figure for Eclipse is 3.813.455 € for a 7.802.936 € total over the 5 days. Most predictions had it around 9/10M for the 5-day so there's a slight disappointment. New Moon made 16.4M last year after a 20% higher start, using the same multiplier Ecplise would make about 14M, but weekdays can really help it. The Monday gross is 747K euros, or 50% above NM's 6th day, and with the lack of competition (other than TS3 there's NOTHING to see in theatres until the end of the next month) and better WOM it should come close to its predecessor's final gross.

Some (moderately reliable) predictors foresee a 5-day well above 5M and a total cume of around 17M for TS3, which would be in line with Ratatouille (17.5) and Up (15.7M). But releasing an animated film in the middle of the summer is a very risky experiment here.
I'm pretty sure the 5-day gross will be lower than that, but thanks to the huge summer weekdays the multiplier can be really high. My pessimistic prediction: 3.0M OW, 4.6M 5-day, 15M total.

About the other summer releases...Predators should struggle to 2M, Splice may not reach 1M. And that's it.

Bad news for Toy Story 3 here. :disgust:
After 1.5M euros on Wed+Thu, the Pixar film did pretty bad on Friday. The early incomplete figure is 550K, and it's not going to increase by much (there aren't more than 40/50 3D theatres to count). With the World Cup tomorrow, this is going to fall well below all expectations.
Hopefully it's just a sign that blockbusters without a huge fanbase should never be released in the summer here, if the other countries in Western Europe follow us then even 450M OS will be difficult to reach.

At least Eclipse is going to drop around 55% over the weekend, much better than HBP's -66%.

Oh my, I didn't even remember I opened this :funny:

Unfortunately after the summer, the site I used as a source (http://boxofficeitalia.wordpress.com/) went downhill, and quickly became a wasteland. It didn't have full weekday charts, but some partial daily numbers were always posted. If you browse the comments, sometimes some daily numbers are released, but it's just a random thing.

Anyways, the last #'s available are for Wednesday:

220.000 euros for Benvenuti al Sud (Italian remake of Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis - yes, we have to rely on things like this to make successful films -_-), 21.6M total
Despicable Me: 165K – tot 7.520
Paranormal Activity 2 101K – tot 1.406
Wall Street 100K – tot 1.398

About this weekend, Maschi contro Femmine (Males vs Females, another dull local comedy) is headed for a great 5M 4-day opening (Monday is a holiday here).
Despicable me will have a very strong hold and get close to 10M (probably 9.5M total after 17 days, and if it happens Toy Story 3 will be beaten).

Yeah, but it looks like it won't even enter the top 3.

My predictions for the (long) weekend:
Maschi vs Femmine: 5.5M
Winx 3D: 2.2
Despicable Me: 1.9
Benvenuti al Sud: 1.8
Salt: 1.6
Legend of the Guardians: 1.0

I'm sure yours are fine.. Is that from any source or just a reasonable guesstimate?

Either way it wouldn't be tooo bad of a result... Almost double the opening of Knight and Day so I'm happy with it.

Well, not too good either considering K&D flopped here.

Oh, and they are less than guesstimates, just pure and simple predictions. :p (can't find any Friday #)

4-day numbers

Maschi vs Femmine: 5.5M
Benvenuti al Sud: 2.9M
Despicable Me: 2.2M
Salt: 1.2M
Winks 3D: 1.2M (so glad it failed!)
Legend of the Guardians: 0.8M

Pretty bad for all the openers, except MvsF.

3-day actuals (Monday excluded):
1) Maschi vs Femmine 3.026.668 € Total: 3.621.956 €
2) Benvenuti al Sud 1.871.100 (-33%) € Tot: 23.611.837 €
3) Despicable Me 1.286.233 € (-50%) Tot: 8.929.283 €
4) Salt 751.390 € Tot: 751.390 €
5) Winx Club 3D 670.241 € Tot: 670.241 €
6) Wall Street 2 574.054 € (-48%) Tot: 2.059.385 €
7) Paranormal Activity 2 569.345 (-48%) € Tot: 2.051.884 €
8) Legend of the Guardians 401.341 € Tot: 401.341 €
9) Figli delle Stelle 264.625 € (-53%) Tot: 1.032.045 €
10) Step Up 3D 217.704 € (-70%) Tot: 6.536.887 €

Strong opening for Maschi vs Femmine, could make 15M euros.

Benvenuti al Sud is a monster. It wasn't hit at all by direct competition from Maschi vs Femmine, and might get to 30M total (which isn't sure yet, as late legs tend to be awful in Italy).

Despicable Me suffered competition from 2 3D openers, while the same factor, along with the theatres lost, completely destroyed Step Up 3D.

Bad starts for Salt and the 2 animated openers in 3D Winx and Guardians. All of them will likely fail to reach 3 millions.

WS2 and PA2 are having crazy similar runs o.O

Poor Salt :(

Why do they wait so long to release in Italy??

I understand Summer is a deadzone there but what about September? Or even early October? Could have prevented some piracy/loss of interest.

Wow, looks like SOLE A CATINELLE will break all opening records in Italy. Depending on Sunday Numbers we could see a $24m opening, thus becoming the biggest movie of the year in its 1st weekend!
