 Re: The World's End
I think the robot storyline is extremely well thought out and not flimsy at all, especially as the whole film is about "slaves" The discussion of trying to distinguish the blanks in particular is hilarious but also the point of the film that they can't up at all. Watched it again. I love it even more. It's a really well layered film, and loved little things I saw more and more: It's harder to root for the characters as they never quite meld together, but it works really well in the context of the "togetherness" angle. My favorite bits I caught onto the 2nd time:
1. Each pub and story plot dealing with the 12 Step program 2. Pegg at the end doing Dr. King Schultz from Django Unchained, and Ray Stanz when going over the work of the car. 3. The juke box from Shaun of the Dead 4. More cameos
I hope they do make another sometime. And they better have Daniel Craig in it to keep the tradition going.

 Re: The World's End
This was not very good at all. Quite disappointing. The great reviews are a bit baffling. It wasn't really funny, nor was it touching. A weak close to the "Cornetto" trilogy. I had been underwhelmed by Hot Fuzz but I still liked it, and it seems like a masterpiece next to this.

 Re: The World's End
I recently said that Elysium was my biggest disappointment of the summer, but I think The World's End might have edged it out to win this miserable competition.
Sure, there were some funny scenes and clever dialogue scattered throughout, but overall it didn't come close to the quality of Edgar Wright's previous work.
2 out of 5.

 Re: The World's End
Definitely a peculiar and uneven film but I enjoyed it for the most part. The first half is much more enjoyable than the first, and I chuckled a lot throughout. I really enjoy Edgar Wright as a director but I just wish this was more consistently good.

 Re: The World's End
Best movie of the year.
The only question I have is that everywhere I've seen, the film is listed at being 109 minutes. The cut I saw at my theater was 74 minutes without credits. Were 30 minutes cut from the US version? Was a part of my cut missing? Or is the 109m just way off?

You must have had a ton cut off because it is definitely in the 109 range.

LOL! "Best movie of the year. My theatre didn't show the first 35 minutes, though. Still, best movie of the year."

 Re: The World's End
That's so weird. And it flowed so perfectly. Now I'm gonna have to see it again tomorrow at another theater to compare it to whatever the hell version of it I saw today.
And as David pointed out, I'm going to have to hold off on proclaiming it "Best movie of the year". Congrats Woody. you get to keep the title at least another day.
I wonder where it got cut. Must've been somewhere in the middle. They still wound up at every pub though...

 Re: The World's End
Did it open with a montage of their initial, failed pub crawl and show Pegg reassembling the group?

Yep. All that was there.
The movie started somewhere between 4:45 and 4:50 and got out at 6:01.

 Re: The World's End
That's incredibly strange.
I feel like I already forgot everything that happened in this movie. It was so unmemorable to me.

 Re: The World's End
One place where I might be able to start; How much is Pierce Brosnan in the movie? In the version I saw he's in three scenes: The montage at the beginning, the second big fight scene in the pub where he tries to convince them that they aren't that bad, and at the very end when they're talking with the voice. Is he in any more than that?

He only has three scenes.

Okay, I'm dumb. I just figured out what happened. The good news is that I did see the entire movie. Both Wiki and The Movie Spoiler confirm that.

 Re: The World's End
A couple of things happened.
1. I always time movies. I don't know why, but I've done it for as long as I can remember. I think it's OCD. By the time the lights came up my watch read 1:14. At some point in the movie my wrist must've hit the stop button or something. Or I need a new watch.
2. Today I had a choice of seeing two movies: The World's End and The Spectacular Now. The World's End started at 4:00 and The Spectacular Now started at 4:45. I obviously chose the former, but for whatever reason it stuck in my mind that it started at 4:40. Maybe I have numeric dyslexia. (For anyone curious, I am seeing The Spectacular Now tomorrow)
One thing is for sure though and that is when I saw 1:14 I absolutely bought it. The movie is an absolute breeze to sit through. Not that 109 minutes is a chore or anything, but this is the most fun I've had at the movies all year.

 Re: The World's End
The more I reflect on this film, the less I can forgive its flaws. I am going to bump my generous grade of B- down a notch to the C+/C range.

Second viewing solidified my B+ grade. Simon Pegg deserves major recognition for this performance. It's funny and crazy and turns sad on a dime.

After the movie was over I actually heard some idiot in real life use the phrase "Cornetto Trilogy." Never been that close to just punching somebody in the face.
