russian vodka boycott
Maybe somebody should tell the people that when you empty a bottle on the street you still have bought the bottle and the producer in Russia gets ist money?
When you boycott a product you dont buy it right?
It would be smarter to drink non russian vodka in public with a t-shirt saying "This is not Putin-Vodka".

I tend to agree with Magnus, unfortunately. The situation for gays and lesbians in Russia is troubling, without a doubt, and I understand the impulse to react to it with a Boycott and Online Petitions and such, but this is a cultural and national problem on their part, and a P.C. college student in Brooklyn not buying Russian vodka and burning his copy of War and Peace is not going to force a shift in their cultural paradigm.

I beg to disagree. In the case of boycotting Russian brands, it's consumer activism. People are not sheep. They respond to change. That's what's interesting about capitalism.
It might not get Russia to change the law. But it will force Stolichnaya to take side on the issue. If the boycott is successful, it will have to spend some money revitalizing the brand's image, by partnering with LGBT-friendly companies. US companies would very well welcome that change (more $$$). And if Stolichnaya is a powerful lobby in Russia, it might actually effect some change.

I'm also being realistic here. The goal of boycotting is not to influence the Russian government, but rather to force Stolichnaya to take a stand and strengthen the LGBT-friendly allies. Side effect is it'll benefit American companies.

Again, this publicity helps Chinese labor watch groups get more media attention. For example, "Apple faces new China worker abuse claims". Especially so when the Chinese government seems to like this kind of publicity in support of its anti-imperialist view, as evidenced in the latest GSK scandal. If Apple doesn't want the Chinese government to take advantage of this publicity, it will have to do something about the labor conditions there.
