I just can't believe The Lone Ranger cost $250M. Where does that place it on the list of all-time highest production budgets?

Tied for 6th highest. Only POTC: AWE ($300m), John Carter ($300m), The Hobbit ($270m), Tangled ($260m) and Spider-Man 3 ($258m) rank higher.

TLR reportedly the same budget as The Dark Knight Rises. Just how much was Depp being paid?

To be fair, it does seem incredibly expensive. I imagine extensive practical stunts involving trains balloon a budget rapidly.

It did. Disney canceled it at the eleventh hour at one point, when the plot focused on a Native American version of werewolves.

It sounds absurd considering this is a mega-mega-budget July 4th tent-pole release, but at times I get the sense The Lone Ranger exists first and foremost because it is a quixotic journey Johnny Depp dreamed of going on to amuse himself in the desert, and the Disney executives were eager to please him and ensure he stays Pirates minded.

Not necessarily. You have to factor in advertising costs in the total budget then multiply by 2 to get a (very) rough breakeven point.

Just say DM2 had a $70m marketing budget. That's about $150m in total costs (again, very crude measure due to distribution costs/tie ins/etc). DM2 would need to gross $300m in WW grosses to start making a profit at the boxoffice. Theatrical grosses however comprise just a fraction of the total take which is why it may surprise you that John Carter, while a money loser, will come close to making its money back.

It's too complicated to play this bgame. Where are tie-in's, which certainly made Universal a lot of money by now? And merchandise licenses?

Oh and having seen The Lone Ranger, you certainly do see the money on-screen.

For 250 million dollars, I am almost surprised they did not hire a more widely known actor with real draw to play the Lone Ranger.

I wonder how much more Depp got paid. 20x more than Hammer?

I don't get it. How is Descpiable Me 2 $125 million cheaper than Pixar's films. Of course, their animation is better, but sure as hell not $125 million better.
Wasn't virtually all of DM2's animation outsourced to France? We should see something similar with Planes being outsourced to India.

DM2 wasn't "outsourced" to France. Illumination's animation studio (formerly MacGuff) is in France. It's the same studio that did DM1 and The Lorax.

The Lone Ranger isn't surprising. It looks like it cost no less than $180-200 million, and with Depp and Bruckheimer involved, there's your $250 million budget.

That's the standard blockbuster budget for Pacific Rim the problem is that it won't open like one.

I can see Turbo and potentially Red 2 making money, but RIPD is a gamble. RIPD has had a lot of marketing so I could see almost 50-70 million for advertising. I like the dude and RR and it looks entertaining for the most part so I hope it does well.
