I've been a little preoccupied of late, but prioritized 300 and Last Mimzy as my must-sees when I had a chance to get out to the show today.
300 was a hot motion treatment of the graphic novel as seen through the lens of modern gaming. It's theme of honor and principle were borne out by it's inspiring it's storyline, yet betrayed by it's visual telling. Still, how can one not feast on this much FX eyecandy and F&B beefcake? It's pretty freakin' awesome as cartoons go -- this hybrid human/cgi beast is one who's full power is just now barely beginning to be explored. I welcome our new halfbreed overlord!
Plus, what can I say, I'm still a sucker for any story that doesn't end "happily", though they did suck out a bit on the "ever after"...

SPARTANS CAN'T COUNT TO 300. SPARTANS AREN'T MATHEMATICIANS, THEY ARE WARRIORS. SPARTANS CAN ONLY COUNT TO ...THIS MANY... BECAUSE SPARTAN ONLY HAS 9 FINGERS AND A STUMP AND 8 TOES FROM GETTING BIT OFF BY WILD WOLVES (AND FROSTBITE APPARENTLY).
THERE IS NO GLORY IN COUNTING ANY HIGHER.

The middle third was great entertainment. The rest bordered on painful.

Counting of any kind is arbitrary, or as I prefer to think of it -- impressionistic...

Entertaining but nevertheless quite stupid and extremely overrated.

Yeah, well...in such a long thread, there is not much I can add here. It was...good. Quite good, but I had huge expectations and it did not deliver on all of them. In any case, it is a fine piece of work. The visual style is incredible, but the action let me down. It is cool to watch at first, but it becomes repeptitive after a while and it seems as if you are watching someone playing PlayStation. It was also not nearly as gory and bloody as I expected.
The acting was decent with Butler and Headey (who was really remarkable!) being the excellent standouts. The battle with the "Immortals" was the best part of the flick. At some points it was simply too bizarre for its own good. I mean...the goat?!

Quite the visual feast, so much so that the story just can't keep up. That's not to say that the script is bad, but it just can't compete with the look of the film. Every scene of this film is beautiful to watch, and shot so perfectly that one is simply in awe of the talent involved. The big action scenes manage to remain intimate and personal by the slowing down and speeding up of the film, making it much easier to follow than the typical MTV-style editing and vibrating camera. It makes it obvious what is going on, a welcome change from most sword-and-sandal epics. The story is a bit too complex for a film like this, and the political subplot really doesn't work at all. The acting is surprisingly good, especially from Butler, who really owned this film with his magnetic performance, and the film's weirder moments were balanced out nicely by the fight scenes. Not especially great, but very entertaining and quite beautiful.

 Re: 300
Pompous and so full of insipid rethoric that it slowly slips from boring to annoying. Screenwriter Huckleberry Hound didn’t do a good job, and the stupid dialogues quickly show all their bombastic banality. The Lumiere brothers are still turning in their graves. F

I tried watching it on DVD and got so. fucking. bored. There is zero rewatchability to this film for me. Great the first time in theaters on the big screen, like watching paint dry the second go around.

 Re: 300
I don't see why people get so upset with this film. In 2003, the entire world fell in deep love with Pirates of the Caribbean, a movie in which the entertainment value is the ONLY attraction. Why can't 300 be enjoyed just because of its entertainment value? Because it's not a comedy? Becasue Johnny Depp is not in it?
To me, it's a damn entertaining ACTION MOVIE. It is nothing more than that, and it's perfectly fine that way.

It's still fantastic. But I really do burst out laughing when Xerxes says, "you will see that I am kind" like three times. Not sure why, it's just really funny.

 Re: 300
I think the novelty of the visuals and action wears off after the first half-hour or so, and from there the film collapses under the weight of its story, or lack thereof. I won't deny that the action is consistently awesome, but the film itself just isn't that interesting by the end.
Not great, not bad. Fun, overall, but it gets a little old.

 Re: 300
Watched it last night it was ok, no interest in a second viewing.
I think I would have prefered to watch the trailer over and over, much better trailer than movie.
Probably just too much hype and unmet expectations, but this really just didn't work for me.

I was worried this would happen, since I already felt kinda bored during the action shots they showed 235078x in the TV spots. I'll probably avoid seeing this again, such a horrid disappointment.
