 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
Oh I forgot about Joel Edgerton, I quite liked his performance. And while Mulligan may be a good actress (though not terribly impressive in this one), her chemistry with DiCaprio was non-existant. It was very hard for me to believe Gatsby (or any man on earth) would fall in love that much with her. Just didn't felt it with those two.

Maguire was so out of place here, it's incredible.
DiCaprio and Edgerton were the two highlights. Great performances.

DiCaprio and Edgerton were the two highlights. Great performances. I think Maguire played Nick a little too longingly, if you know what I mean. I was waiting for him to try to make out with Gatsby. I know Tobey and Leo are longtime friends but...lol

 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
I read the book recently and I feel like Luhrmann did it justice. Not sure how I feel about the whole Nick being in therapy angle as I think that's not in the book at all but I guess it served its purpose. And I liked Maguire. *shrug*

 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
I think people are seeing the movie as told by Maguire... but they're not seeing it as about Gatsby.
If you see it as a Gatsby story, it's wonderful. Mainly because Leo is fantastic.

 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
I love the moment when Nick adds "The Great" by hand to the title of his typed manuscript. A final gift to his enigmatic dead friend who so longed to be great, to be grand and special, by every measure.

The best scene and the only one I would call trully GREAT GREAT GREAT is the hotel room confrontation between Gatsby and Buchanan. DiCaprio is really good, but hell, Edgerton kills it.

 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
I thought the addition of the "The Great" was rather hokey - as was the framing device as a whole.
I also took it as more of a nod to the fact that one of the original titles Fitzgerald considered using for the book was just Gatsby. But then again, that's probably just me geeking out over the source material.

Opinion is split from critics. 49% on RT.
Probably expected.

Thinking a bit more about this movie I get the feeling I could like it more on repeat viewings.

 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is such an unfairly despised film online. It is so delicate and melancholy.

It is the transient nature of life that makes it precious. A noble, very Japanese way of viewing life and death, but hard to invest in when you are inside a certain moment in life, a certain love or time of pleasure. At least for people who have not yet achieved full Bradley enlightenment.

 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
The acting is fine and the script does fine connecting with the source material. However the editing and a lot of the effects are just bad or horribly put together. Baz just couldn't control himself. In the end it's middle of the road.

 Re: The Great Gatsby (2013)
I believe he controls himself a great deal here, to be honest. He turns it up to eleven during the party and driving sequences, but he also knows when to restrain himself and let his actors dominate.
