Wow, $19m is crazy for Gatsby. The popularity of the book helped, of course, but I think the three major factors here were release date, Leonardo DiCaprio and MARKETING. Killed it.

Gatsby had a LOT of bomb potential, but pretty much everything that could possibly go right for it did. Leo's now looking at the second biggest opening of his career, which is pretty incredible.

Man, could you imagine what would've happened if this and Django had opened up against each other at Christmas? Considering the lukewarm reviews, I think this move definitely proved to be beneficial for both parties.

Yeah, quite eager to see how much it drops today. Hopefully today's # will not be too below 15 million...

Very happy with its #'s though!

Told ya. Leo is too big of a draw and the book is too famous for it to possibly open under SHUTTER ISLAND.

I think Leo was the draw here, not the book. Many famous stories have opened poorly.

Not really the book only needs a semi bankable lead. The original Gatsby was kind of mediocre too, but Robert Redford also had a very consistent track record and he took it to 100+ as well adjusted.

I'd say the book is up there with A Christmas Carol, where the interpretation will also be a major factor. It did look very good and Leo only helped, I thought 45+ was possible when even my dad wanted to see it, that almost never happens and the films usually break out. I think the last two films my dad wanted to see was Safe House and Sherlock Holmes.

That's crazy for Gatsby. :) I'm happy for Baz. Can't wait to see it.

Also, IM3 number is a bit disappointing. Thought 70m was pretty assured. 450m is probably out of the question due to the May competition. Should fall somewhere between 400m-425m.

Considering the weekdays it recovered quite well.

The Great Gatsby performed as strongly as Peeples did dismally.

Peeples straight out bombing may be the bigger story of the weekend.

I can't think of what other flicks had Perry's name on it that he didn't direct besides Precious. Guess his fans knew the difference or the movie just didn't appeal to his audience.

But Scandal is the highest rated show on TV among African-Americans. #truestory

It'd be interesting to see Gatsby's ethnic breakdown. Some of the audience that may have gone for Peeples were probably swallowed up.

which makes its bombing more surprising. Maybe Gatsby did have a big effect on it afterall

I definitely think that Gatsby had an effect. Jay-Z promoted the film just as much as the stars did. There was definitely urban appeal.

I'm keen to see the Cinemascore for Gatsby. People seem to think it'll get toxic WOM but things I've seen on social media seem to be mostly really positive.

According to Nikki:

SATURDAY 3 PM, 3RD UPDATE: There’s more good news at the box office for Summer 2013. Domestic grosses for Warner Bros‘ The Great Gatsby (3,035 theaters) just kept climbing upward Friday though audiences gave it a ‘B’ CinemaScore.

It will do well because of the type of film it is... Its all action and comedies coming next... but its still falling well over 50% 2nd weekend.

Looking at the number I dont understand how people are seeing more then 55 million for GG..

I think 52 max and more around 50.

I'm happy warner is having a hit, Gatsby has the chance to top 150m easily

on the other hand, IM3 will face direct competition from now, ST2, H3 and FF6 will be juggernauts, even Epic can steal it some audience.

Looks like my prediction of 395m-405m total for it would be a reality

Epic will be an "epic" flop, will gross less than that escape from planet earth film.

I agree on its domestic gross, but OS will be big

Epic won't flop. It'll make money by default because there's been nothing for families in months. Look how The Croods has been monopolizing the marketplace.

I understand that thinking, but The Croods looked interesting, whereas Epic looks so utterly generic and thus, very shit.

I also think it will flop well.
