I doubt they have this specific obstacle again though because of this. Also, I looked on the Internet and couldn't find any other case of death with the event. Very possible this isn't the first though. Genuinely sorry to hear about your friend, Magnus. That sounds totally unacceptable and like a major lawsuit waiting to happen. Why didn't any of the other folks doing the obstacle help out as well? Knowing the death could have been prevented had it not be for obvious human error is incredibly frustrating and only compounds the misfortune. Terrible situation, hang in there bro.

please don't do Tough Mudder Libs. This may actually start to make some minor headlines in the area but one of my closest friends just died yesterday from an incident at Tough Mudder in West Virginia. Funny that Chip said ice bath is the worst obstacle because my friend died because he fell unconscious in a pool of ice water and remained in the the water for four minutes (why it took them that long to take him out is something I don't know though very angry about).
I understand that my friends situation was kind of a freak accident and that this will probably be the first death in the history of the event but as someone who is currently in utter grief right now, I feel an obligation to just warn you and everyone else about this event. Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry to hear this.

Re: I just signed up for a half marathon
"Pretty fucking fast" for humans would be 4 minutes per mile, meaning 52-60 minutes, not 98 minutes. That's considered slow, or "nothing special at all", actually. It's pretty fucking fast for other species, though, say, fish. Well done and all for completing a marathon and not sitting on your ass like most in modern society, but the time you ran it in is just not special. That's all I'm saying. Libs, do you plan on doing another? or is it a bucket list thing?

Re: I just signed up for a half marathon
who the hell cares if its pretty slow or nothing special in terms of the time she finished?! The fact that she did it and actually completed the marathon its pretty remarkable for a person that doesnt do this as a hobby, and she had so little time to train also.

Re: I just signed up for a half marathon
Averaging under 8 minutes a mile is FANTASTIC, for anyone that doesn't run multiple marathons a year.
So yes, Libs did a fantastic job. I can barely average 8 minutes for a few miles, let alone 13.1.

Re: I just signed up for a half marathon
I've run marathons before and I run daily, I just hadn't done one in four years and didn't have all that much time to train. 1:38 is not "super fast," but it's also not as slow as Algren seems to be indicating. The average time for women to finish a half is over 2.

Magnus, I am not trying to stir up any negative emotions, but it seems your late friend is the subject of a new New York Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/08/sport ... -life.html

I ran my first 5K two weeks ago. Finished in 27 minutes. I'm doing the ROC 5K in three weeks!

Just ran 12.5 miles (my preferred Saturday distance) for the first time in two months. Broken ribs from a jet accident prevented me from running for almost a month and then had to work my way back up. Don't let anyone tell you that water is soft. Moving at a high speed and hitting the water is a lot like hitting cement.

Magnus wrote: Caius wrote: Broken ribs from a jet accident we need more info on this story. ***skip the below unless you want a jet ski story that ranks a 6/10 on the "tl/dr" scale*** Was riding bitch on a jet ski in early September on the mighty Columbia. The driver tried to do one of those cool things you see the douchy bro skier in a 1980s film do, you know, where they ski up to the nerd/loser and turn and stop really quickly and spray the nerd/loser with snow? Well I wasn't holding on and the driver tried to do that with the jet ski (really a more like a Waverunner) to another jet ski and I was chucked into the river and right onto the wake from a passing boat. Landed on my back doing about 30. Four broken ribs across my right side. I immediately knew I broke something and was glad I was wearing a life jacket. Doggy paddled to the jet ski and had to pull myself on to it. Had to help the other rider as well since they are not in the best shape and and the person lacks upper-body strength. Drove about 2-3 miles back to the boat launch and pretty much paced around in semi-shock until we were able to go to the ER. Some hot chick had to help me onto the MRI table and I think she caught a flash of my junk in those stupid hospital gowns they make you wear. Doctor pretty much just said "here is some morphine and some stuff to make your shit soft so you won't strain. It will heal in about 8 weeks." And the person in the room next to mine in the ER died.
