Well martial arts film in general is a genre about two dimensionalness. Its a bit like Italian opera, imo. Or comic books. There are certain vehicles used to express emotion, one of them being, lets say, that one lover always stabs the other. The heightened sort of "yelling" that sometimes comes with this, etc. Only recently have directors started opening that up to humor, and its bringing mixed results. I'm glad it doing that though, since no genre can stay static for that long. Its one of the problems I have with pure martial arts fanpeople. Its like they're watch the same thing over and over and just be like "Awsome fight scene man." That's going to encourage the movie to not change. But enough people have started saying they don't like one (Thank goodness Jackie Chan broke into American film it actually raised our expectations and ability to be critical towards the martial arts movie). Now I'm hearing great stuff from Some of the new films, and people are returning to the older ones for such things as historic value, rather than placing all martial arts films on one ageless plane.

As no one mentioned this, I have to add The Seven Samurai and as a double feature it's American remake, The Magnificent Seven. That would be interesting getting people to discuss both of these movies.
Anyway, does the Seven Samurai deserve the high praise that it usually recieves - maybe considered one of the 10 greatest movies ever.

Its not my favorite Kurosawa actually, that title goes to Ran. Seven Samurai could have used a bit of more editting actually. I think part of its notoriety in the states actually is due to The Magnificent Seven.
We did forget to include him in this viewing, but no worries, we'll have plenty more.
edit*** I did just look it up on IMDB and yes, it's got an 8.9 star ranking, which is insanely high.

Bride with White hair it is. I'll be home tomorrow night, so I'll pick it up and watch it tomorrow night. Have to say, I saw the trailer for this once on another movie, and it's piqued my curiosity for quite some time.

i just watched one of my favorite martial arts movies.... bloodsport. aside from some bad acting, it's a really fun martial arts movie. some really intense fights when they are in the kumite.

I don't know. Try checking Blockbuster.com. I'm going to try there and Hollywood Video.
