Re: Intl. Box-Office: The Hobbit passes $600 million oversea
"Blanketing the foreign theatrical circuit in its second weekend of international release, 20th Century Fox’s A Good Day to Die Hard easily captured the No. 1 box-office spot overseas with the year’s biggest foreign opening tally thus far. The action sequel grossed $61.5 million from 9,595 locations in 63 markets, moving its early foreign cume to $80.1 million.
The fifth installment of the venerable franchise starring Bruce Willis introduced itself to 37 new territories and hit No. 1 in 32. Biggest debut was in the U.K., where 845 locations registered $7.6 million. Japan contributed $6.8 million from 641 sites, while Russia came up with $6.7 million at 1,693 and Germany generated $6.4 million at 703.
As Fox put it, “John McClane has his biggest weekend ever in the international marketplace!” Openings in France, Brazil and India are on tap this week, with China and Australia releases due next month.
Imax reported that Die Hard grossed $2.1 million at 134 of its giant-screen sites, pushing its two-round total from those venues to $4.5 million. February opening-weekend records for Imax were set in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Die Hard opened offshore last weekend at just seven Asian markets, drawing $10.4 million from 1,182 locations for a per-screen average of nearly $8,800.
Over a 25-year span the four prior Die Hard titles -- all starring Willis -- have prospered overseas, grossing a collective total of $694.6 million, as per Fox figures, with the second sequel of the franchise, 1995’s Die Hard With a Vengeance, leading the pack with an offshore tally of $264.5 million.
The 1988 original Die Hard drew $57.8 million in offshore box office, with the first sequel, 1990’s Die Hard 2, grossing $122.5 million. The fourth film in the series, 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard, completed its foreign run with $249.7 million.
Finishing a distant No. 2 was Django Unchained, which had been the No. 1 overseas box-office draw for the previous four weekends.
This time, director Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar contender generated $13.7 million from 4,645 locations in 62 territories, lifting its foreign gross total past the $200 million mark ($208.6 million), of which $40 million came from Germany and $30.4 million from France. A No. 3 Indonesia debut yielded $325,000 at 108 sites.
Ranking No. 2 in second round in the U.K. was Disney’s animation title Wreck-It Ralph, which grossed an estimated $6 million in the market at 549 locations. That propelled the total weekend take to $11.5 million in 68 territories. Ralph crossed the $400 million mark in worldwide box office ($411.2 million) and has tallied an international cume of $225.6 million.
Universal's Les Miserables, with its eight Oscar nominations, held steady with a $10 million gross on the weekend at 2,900 situations in 48 markets, pushing the musical’s foreign gross total to $233.3 million and $379 million worldwide. An Argentina opening ($310,000 at 42 playdates) set an opening market record for a musical. A No. 2 Mexico bow yielded $1.6 million at 315 situations.
Breaking the $100 million foreign gross mark was Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Paramount/MGM’s 3D co-production distributed overseas in most territories by the former. Overseas cume over five rounds of offshore release stands at $101.2 million thanks to a $9.5 million weekend from 2,901 venues in 43 territories handled by Paramount.
With Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton portraying the title pair as grown-up bounty hunters, Hansel & Gretel opened No. 5 in South Korea (via CJ Entertainment), drawing $1.3 million from 287 spots. The film remained No. 1 in Brazil for the fourth straight stanza, with $1.8 million registered at 370 sites for a market cume of $19.3 million.
Continuing to generate box office in unspectacular fashion is Paramount and other distributors’ Flight, starring best actor Oscar nominee Denzel Washington, which grossed $7 million on the weekend at 2,128 spots in 30 markets. International cume is at $45.4 million. A No. 3 France opening registered $1.9 million from 371 sites. This will see Flight open in nine territories including Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln grossed $6.6 million on the weekend at 2,843 spots in 46 markets, moving its foreign gross total to nearly $59 million.
Premiering at No. 1 in China, as per Paramount, Jack Reacher grossed $5.7 million in its ninth weekend of overseas release, lifting its offshore cume to $124.5 million. In China, the Tom Cruise action vehicle generated $4.8 million from 7,500 situations.
Opening day-and-date with its domestic bow was Beautiful Creatures -- a fantasy romance based on a young-adult book series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl – which grossed $5.4 million at some 1,300 screens in 20 overseas markets, as per the film’s foreign distributor Lionsgate International.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s zombie romance Warm Bodies enlarged its offshore footprint by about 10 territories and drew $4 9 million from some 2,200 screens in 34 markets. The film’s early foreign cume stands at $17.7 million.
Holding No. 1 in Spain for a second consecutive weekend was Universal’s Mama, which drew a muscular $2.4 million from 320 locations for a 10-day market cume of $7 million. Weekend take over all for the horror title starring Jessica Chastain delivered $4.7 million at 1,200 playdates in 16 territories. Foreign cume stands at $20.5 million. Five openings are on tap this week including the U.K.
Challenging Django Unchained for the No. 1 slot in France was Sony Animation’s Hotel Transylvania, which has resurfaced late in its foreign run (begun Sept. 27). Openings in France ($3.17 million at 588 spots) and in French-speaking Switzerland generated a total of $3.8 million from some 620 spots, moving the animation title’s offshore cume to $184.3 million.
Lionsgate’s tsunami disaster title The Impossible elevated its overseas cume to $143 million thanks to a $3 million weekend at some 1,600 sites in 42 markets. Warner Bros.’ period crime thriller Gangster Squad drew $2.5 million in 38 markets, moving its foreign gross total to $46.4 million. Openings in Italy and Mexico are due this week.
Top local-language newcomer in France on the weekend was Pathe’s release of Turf, directed and written by Fabien Onteniente and starring Alain Chabat. The racetrack comedy opened at 640 sites and drew an estimated $1.4 million, sufficient for a No. 4 market ranking.
Other international cumes: Fox’s Life of Pi, $466.2 million (after a $3.65 million weekend at 2,817 in 27 markets); Universal and other distributors’ Zero Dark Thirty, $19.6 million in Universal territories only; Warners' The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, $659.6 million; Universal’s This Is 40, $9.1 million (after a No. 5 U.K. opening generating $2 million at 383 sites); DreamWorks/Paramount’s Rise of the Guardians, $200.3 million; Universal’s Ted, $316.6 million; Fox’s Break Up Man, $22.8 million; Paramount’s Tad: The Lost Explorer, $32.8 million; Universal’s Pitch Perfect, $44.7 million; Universal’s Anna Karenina, $40.9 million; Warner’s Argo, $77.1 million; and Fox’s Murder 3, $3.2 million in opener at India."http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/f ... ard-422041______________________________________________________________________________

Studios only care about big money. So they put all of their marketing resources into about 3 pictures per year. It's pathetic.

Eh, Algren, The Last Stand was given a very proper release here. Heavy marketing, well-publicized German premiere with Arnie, it was the widest release on its opening weekend, I believe.
And it BOMBED hard. Its total admissions number will be lower than what Parker got in 11 days (and that is not huge either).

What I mean is that, if this movie bombs in a market like Germany, traditionally one of the strongest oversas markets for Arnie, then even with the right pish, it hardly has a chance to succeed elsewhere too.
Bullet to the Head opens here in three weeks, released a weekend after The Sweeney and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Django tops Basterds overseas!
It's fine, I think. Bullet to the Head is at $15m worldwide so far. It has tons of markets left to open in (including its last stop in Japan on June 1st). Its budget was $40m. It can easily make a profit from theatrical grosses and DVD sales etc etc. It disappointed in most markets, but because it was made for such little, it won't lose money.

It's definitely not losing money.
I think reaching Driven's $54m in theatrical grosses worldwide is probably a good goal.

Jack the Giant Slayer is you typical $200-250 million overseas-grosser. See Battleship, Wrath of the Titans, John Carter, Real Steel, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Robin Hood...
All these effects-heavy films that pulled mediocre numbers in North America, but did solid returns overseas.

"20th Century Fox’s A Good Day To Die Hard narrowly captured the No. 1 box office spot in its fourth weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit and crossed the $150-million total overseas mark ($162.3 million).
But the weekend’s loudest noise came out of China where New Line/Warner Bros.’ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey registered a gangbusters $37.3 million in 10 days, propelling the Peter Jackson fantasy epic -- which opened offshore in December -- to a $700-million foreign gross total and more than $1 billion worldwide (only the 15th title in film history to surpass that figure).
Warner’s also introduced on the weekend Jack The Giant Slayer, director Bryan Singer’s 3D interpretation of the Jack and the Beanstalk fable, in 10 Asian markets – South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam and in India.
Playing at 1,824 locations, Jack rolled up a total of $13.7 million -- more than a $7,500 per-screen average. Korea was by far the biggest market ($4.9 million at 507 sites). Jack opens in Germany, Spain and Mexico next week.
Also new to the foreign circuit this stanza was Fox Searchlight’s Stoker, Korean director Park Chan-Wook’s English-language film debut, which generated a mild-mannered $2.4 million at 717 screens. Best market for the mystery thriller costarring Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman was South Korea where the weekend tally was $1.69 million drawn from 329 spots.
With no new openings, A Good Day, the fifth installment of action franchise starring Bruce Willis, grossed $18.3 million on the weekend at 8,199 locations in 67 territories. France was its biggest weekend market, throwing off $3.5 million and a No. 2 market ranking on the weekend at 665 spots. The France cume stands at $10.6 million.
Over a 25-year span the four prior Die Hard titles all starring Willis have prospered overseas, grossing a collective total of $694.6 million, as per Fox figures, with the second sequel of the franchise, 1995’s Die Hard With A Vengeance, leading the pack with an offshore tally of $264.5 million.
The 1988 original Die Hard drew $57.8 million in offshore box office, with the first sequel, 1990’s Die Hard 2, grossing $122.5 million. The last sequel, 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard, completed its foreign run with box office of $249.7 million.
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Paramount/MGM’s 3D co-production distributed overseas in most territories by the former, grossed $15.2 million on the weekend overall at more than 3,500 locations in 54 territories and lifting its total overseas take to $127.2 million.
With Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton portraying the title pair as bounty hunters, Hansel and Gretel drew especially strongly in German-speaking markets. A Germany bow generated a vigorous $5.4 million at 408 spots, more than sufficient for a No. 1 ranking. Ditto in Austria where the first place debut produced $800,000, a big figure for this small territory.
Spain also opened No. 1 ($2.4 million at 487 sites) while a U.K. holdover also contributed $2.4 million (at 404 venues). Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters opens this week in France and French-speaking Switzerland.
Crossing the $250-million foreign box office mark was Universal’s Les Miserables, which nabbed $10.5 million on the weekend at 8,100 venues in 51 territories. The foreign cume currently stands at $264.1 million. (Worldwide, it has grossed $411.7 million.)
Les Miserables opened No. 3 in China, bagging an estimated $3.9 million at some 5,000 playdates. The musical has four foreign markets yet to open with Ecuador dues next on March 15.
Sony’s Django Unchained opened disappointingly in Japan, grabbing $955,000 at 228 spots, and finishing No. 8 in the market. The opening was 30 percent less than that of director Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, said Sony. On the weekend overall, Django grossed $8 million in 59 markets, raising its international cume to $233.4 million.
School holidays fed the appetite for local language fare in France.
Opening a dominant No. 1 was Studio Canal’s release of co-directors Alexandre Charlot and Franck Magnier’s family comedy, Boule et Bill. The live action adaptation of a comic strip about a boy and his dog drew $5.6 million from some 680 screens. Opening No. 3 in the market was EuropaCorp Distribution’s release of director Eric Rochard’s thriller, Mobius, costarring Oscar-winner Jean Dujardin, Cecile De France and Tim Roth. Debut at some 480 playdates generated $3.2 million.
Opening No. 1 in Japan, Paramount and other distributors’ Flight starring Denzel Washington grossed $2.5 million at 321 sites, which Paramount says was “more than quadruple” the comparable market gross of best picture Oscar winner, Argo. Weekend over all generated $5.2 from all distributors in 47 markets, elevating Flight’s foreign gross total to $60.4 million, of which $49 million derived from Paramount territories.
Opening in five territories including No. 1 bows in Colombia and Panama was Universal’s Mama, which drew $4.1 million over all from 1,400 locations in a total of 19 territories. Foreign cume for the horror title starring Jessica Chastain stands at $33.9 million. Nine openings are on tap this week including Russia and Taiwan.
Vying for No. 1 in its fourth round in the U.K. was Disney’s animation title, Wreck-It Ralph, which generated $2.3 million and a market cume of $31.9 million. Weekend over all came up with $4 million in 68 territories, raising Ralph’s foreign gross total to $247.9 million accumulated over 18 rounds. Worldwide take is $435.2 million.
Post-Oscar action was helpful to Lincoln, which nabbed $3.8 million on the weekend at 2,311 sites in 40 markets and raising its overseas cume to $73.9 million; and to Life of Pi, which collected $2.8 million at 1,962 spots in 25 markets for a foreign cume of $477 million.
Other international cumes: Universal’s Anna Karenina, $46.3 million; Fox’s Break Up Man, $24.5 million; Universal’s Identity Thief, $1.6 million; Paramount’s Tad - The Lost Explorer, $15 million in Latin American markets; Universal’s Ted, $324.5 million; and Universal’s This Is 40, $13.2 million; and Universal and other distributors’ Zero Dark Thirty, $42 million."http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/f ... ard-425761____________________________________________________________________________

Nicer hold for Die Hard, should be able to pass 200 million just from these holdovers, with China, Australia, Italy, and a few smaller markets left. Might still have an outside shot at 300 WW and enough to make a truly better sequel.
That China opening for The Hobbit is awesome.

Yeah that is a very good hold of DH5.
The Hobbit's Chine number is overall good but its weekend drop is 50% which does not bode well for after-legs in China.

So we're looking at a $60m-$70m total for The Hobbit in China. Not great. But good enough to get it above $1b.

"Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" also makes news on the foreign circuit as it catches up with "The Hangover Part II" on its way to becoming the No. 1 R-rated comedy of all time overseas; "I'm So Excited" marks Pedro Almodovar's biggest opening in Spain.
Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful boasted the top international opening of 2013 in debuting to a solid $69.9 million from 46 markets, bringing the tentpole's global bow to $150.2 million.
Directed by Sam Raimi, The Wizard of Oz prequel premiered gangbusters in Russia, where it collected $15 million, or 21 percent of the total opening (the movie benefited from Friday being International Women's Day, a holiday).
Overall, box office observers describe Oz's foreign launch as good but not spectacular. They cite several reasons, including the fact that the iconic 1939 film isn't as well known overseas. Also, Oz star James Franco doesn't enjoy the same status as other male leads, including Johnny Depp, whose Disney tentpole Alice in Wonderland opened to $94 million internationally in early March 2010.
Oz has an advantage in playing like a family film, which could give it sturdy legs because of spring school holidays, which begin in another two to three weeks. Ticket sales soared 150 percent from Friday to Saturday in the U.K., where Oz opened No. 1 with $5.7 million from 530 locations. It also placed No. 1 in Australia ($5 million at 278) and Japan ($3.5 million at 329).
Starring Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams opposite Franco, Oz grossed a handy $5.1 million in Mexico, where 3D remains a popular format (ditto for Russia).
Oz was generally soft in Asia. And in Germany, the movie found itself in a close race with holdover Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, loosely based on the German fairy tale by the Grimm brothers. Paramount is estimating a $3.3 million weekend for Hansel, while Disney is projecting $4.2 million for Oz. Final numbers won't be available until early in the week.
Oz has yet to open in several major markets, including France and China.
Hansel and Gretel came in No. 2 overall at the international box office, grossing $11.2 million from 48 markets for an international total of $142 million and global haul of $197 million.
Bruce Willis action pic A Good Day to Die Hard placed No. 3, grossing $9.1 million from 67 territories for a foreign total of $177.9 million and worldwide cume of $241.2 million. The 20th Century Fox movie continues to do big business in Japan, where it has earned $20 million, the best of any country outside the U.S.
Jack the Giant Slayer, still only playing in select Asian markets, grossed $4.9 million from 10 markets in its second weekend. The big-budget tentpole, from New Line and Legendary Pictures, has earned $22.6 million internationally so far for a soft global cume of $66.4 million. This week, Jack opens in Germany, Spain and Mexico.
In Spain, Pedro Almodovar’s latest film Los Amantes Pasajeros (I’m So Excited), a raunchy airline spoof with cameos by Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, opened to $2.6 million from 298 screens, the filmmaker's best debut to date. Warner Bros. is distributing the film in Spain.
Seth MacFarlane's raunchy comedy Ted also made news as it matched the $327 million grossed internationally by The Hangover Part II. Ted, currently enjoying a successful run in Japan, will surpass that film sometime this week to become the top R-rated comedy of all time at the international box office in a notable victory for Universal.
Universal's horror pic Mama, starring Jessica Chastain, opened in nine additional markets over the weekend, grossing $6.3 million in 19 territories and pushing the foreign total to $41.7 million.
Warner Bros.’ release of director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has taken in a total of $708.1 million overseas. Latest round offshore generated $4.76 million from 1,900 venues in 22 markets of which $4.5 million came from China where the 17-day market total for the film is $45.1 million.
The top two slots in France were claimed by local language productions, one of them new. Ranking No. 1 in the market is Studio Canal holdover Boule et Bill, a family comedy which grossed an estimated $3.8 million in its second stanza at 623 screens. Placing No. 2 was newcomer 20 Ans D’Ecart (20 Years Apart), a romantic comedy about a magazine editor and a much younger man. The EuropaCorp. release opened to an estimated $2.3 million at 370 spots."SOURCE_________________________________________________________________________

While on paper that looks good for Oz but given the marketplace condition with family movies it could have done more with 80% of its markets.

Bullet to the Head opens in Spain this weekend. But it was supposed to open in Portugal last weekend and there are no numbers, so I guess it didn't.
