This must have been a project he'd been nursing for quite some time. You can always tell when a filmmaker has clinged to a project for too long, whether it's Martin Scorsese and Gangs of New York, or, say, Baz Lurhmann and Australia. In trying to be about everything, in picking up idea after idea over the years, the film winds up being about nothing at all.
