Best Visual Effects 2012 - Shortlist revealed
I always enjoy this category. Has given us some left-field winners too (The Golden Compass?!?!?!) and surporising snubs (Revenge of the Sith snubbed!).
I think we've got thre near-locks already:
The Avengers The Dark Knight Rises Prometheus
The first two are beloved blockbusters with HUGE success and frankly some great effects work. The second just features some reeeeaaaallly impressive visuals.
Unless something goes terribly wrong, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is in as well. All three LOTR films have won for effects as did King Kong. WETA will delver again, no doubt.
Which in my opinion leaves the fifth nominee up in the air.
Contenders are:
MIB3 Snow White and the Huntsman John Carter Battleship The Amazing Spider-Man Skyfall Life of Pi Cloud Atlas The Hunger Games
I don't think anything else is in any real contention here.
I'd remove Battleship not because it was a domestic flop, but also because the effects, while bombastic, were still generic.
The law of box-office would dictate a nod for The Amazing Spider-Man, but I'm just not feeling it, really.
The Hunger Games is too low-key, aside from the Capitol scenes. nd some effects in it simply suck.
If Life of Pi is a big critical success, then it's definitely in, like Hugo last year. Cloud Atlas' reception is too negative thus far, IMO. Skyfall won't make it, since Casino Royale didn't even get a single nod in a weak year for techs.
John Carter really deserves it, IMO. I found the effects in it terrific...but it probably won't get in. I could see a slightly surprising nod for Snow White and the Huntsman, but right now my money's on Life of Pi.

I wasn't 100% enamored with the film but I think Life of Pi deserves this Oscar.

Life of Pi is more likely to get a BP nom, so it'll probably win.

Shortlist: http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-po ... ders-67156Quote: "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" have made it onto the short list of contenders for Oscars in the Visual Effects category at the 85th Academy Awards, the Academy said Thursday.
The films are included on a list of 10 remaining contenders, a list that also includes "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Cloud Atlas," the big-screen bomb "John Carter," "Life of Pi," "The Avengers," "Prometheus," "Skyfall" and "Snow White and the Huntsman."
Members of the Academy's Visual Effects Branch will be given the opportunity to view 10-minute excerpts from the remaining contenders on Jan. 3, after which they will vote for the five films that will be considered for Oscars.
Oscar nominees will be announced Jan. 10, with the Academy Awards ceremony taking place Feb. 24.

A little surprised that MIB3 didn't make it, but other than that expected list.
I'll be very surprised if it's not these five in the end:
The Avengers The Dark Knight Rises Prometheus The Hobbit Life of Pi

The Avengers The Dark Knight Rises Prometheus The Hobbit Life of Pi It's hard to see a scenario that isn't these five but then this category is almost as weird as Original Song.

It is strange The Impossible isn't even on the short list, despite Hereafter garnering a nomination for a (presumably) much shorter tsunami sequence.

I'm thinking Skyfall could nudge out The Hobbit.
