They're okay. Last weekend was just slightly boosted by the election so it was doubtful weekdays would match the weekend this week.

Weekend Forecast

ImageImageImage

1 (1) One Piece Film Z (Toei) ¥550 million ($6.7 million) Week 2
2 (-) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥400 million ($4.9 million) NEW!
3 (-) Ooku: The Inner Chambers 2 (Asmik Ace/Shochiku) ¥275 million ($3.3 million) NEW!

4 (2) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Warner Bros.) ¥150 million ($1.9 million) Week 2
5 (4) Today, I Started Loving You (Toho) ¥145 million ($1.8 million) Week 3
6 (3) Humanoid Monster, Bem (Toho) ¥140 million ($1.7 million) Week 2
7 (6) 007: Skyfall (Sony) ¥115 million ($1.4 million) Week 4
8 (5) Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Fourze & Wizard (Toei) ¥110 million ($1.3 million) Week 3
9 (7) Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) ¥90 million ($1.2 million) Week 6
10 (8) Frankenweenie (Disney) ¥75 million ($1 million) Week 2

One Piece Film Z's predecessor dropped 58% in it's second weekend three years ago and Evangelion 3.0 dropped 51% it's second weekend last month. A comparable drops is likely, though it's probably going to be closer to 60% than 50% given the how massive it's opening weekend was. After 9 days, the total will have exceeded ¥2.5 billion (over $30 million).

Les Miserables is doing well at many locations I track and while it may not match The Phantom of the Opera, it definitely seems on track to perform better than any other recent musicals and Japan will easily be one of it's best markets. Musicals in the market generally do good business, and with this one being one of the most popular in Japan (the country has performed the musical many times) and the strong cast (good reviews), it'll play very, very well this New Year.

Ooku: The Inner Chambers 2 doesn't have alot of expecations, but should do close to it's predecessors figures.

I also want to point out that the Emperor's Birthday is on Sunday. It's a National Holiday, but it hasn't really boosted the box office in the past when falling on the weekend except for a few cases with some single digit drops for certain films. I don't think it'll make any difference this weekend, though.

12/22
Saturday Estimates

1. One Piece Film Z (Toei) ¥343 million ($4.1 million) Day 8
2. Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥160 million ($2 million) NEW!
3. Today, I Started Loving You (Toho) ¥68 million ($820,000) Day 15
4. Humanoid Monster, Bem (Toho) ¥63 million ($760,000) Day 8
5. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Warner Bros.) ¥61 million ($730,000) Day 9
6. 007: Skyfall (Sony) ¥58 million ($700,000) Day 22
7. Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Fourze & Wizard (Toei) ¥54 million ($650,000) Day 15
8. Ooku: The Inner Chambers 2 (Asmik Ace/Shochiku) ¥50 million ($600,000) NEW!
9. Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) ¥37 million ($440,000) Day 36
10. Frankenweenie (Disney) ¥33 million ($400,000) Day 8

Very good for One Piece Film Z. It's down 52% from it's opening day, steep for the market, but better than it's predecessor and remarkable considering it was the biggest opening day ever for a local film and overall in nearly 6 years. It looks like a second weekend over ¥600 million ($7 million) is happening. It'll likely remain #1 until January 12th.

Les Miserables is off to a great start, selling about 55% more tickets than The Hobbit did on it's first Saturday. It opened on Friday, so this is it's second day in release.

Ooku 2 however is not having a great debut, it's down over 60% compared to it's predecessor's opening day. Yikes. I knew there weren't really any expectations, but figured it would at least come somewhat close to it's predecessor ala Liar Game 2.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) 12/22-23 Weekend Forecast
I'm assuming the Emperor's Birthday delayed the weekend estimates this week.

THR reported that Les Miserables earned an estimated $4.2 million (~360 million yen) this weekend in Japan. They typically report 3-day figures, so the weekend itself is probably closer to $3.5 million (~300 million yen). These numbers can often times be wrong though, so I'd wait until morning.

Highest Grossing Musicals

1. The Phantom of the Opera (Gaga) ¥4.2 billion ($37 million)
2. Chicago (Gaga) ¥3.5 billion ($29 million)
3. Enchanted (Disney) ¥2.91 billion ($28 million)*
4. Mamma Mia! (Toho-Towa) ¥2.6 billion ($28 million)
5. Sweeney Todd (Warner Bros.) ¥2.05 billion ($20 million)
6. Dreamgirls (UIP) ¥1.92 billion ($16 million)

*Only included it because most of it's live-action.

Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) will certainly exceed ¥2 billion ($25 million) with it's estimated opening weekend and if it gets the usual mid/late December legs (8x, 9x, sometimes 10x+ multipliers) then ¥3 billion ($37 million) is in play, too.

308. A good amount, especially for a non-Toho release.

The opening is definitely poor (the Saturday estimates are the only basis for this though*), but let's wait and see how legs are. Films that skew female always have better legs than normal and general legs this time of year are also very strong. A multiplier less than 8 is very doubtful.

*Numbers are still being delayed due to the Holidays. The Emperor's Birthday on the 23rd was National Holiday, and while Christmas (24th/25th) isn't a holiday, it's more popular these days than it used to be.

The Cinema Chains updated earlier, so I'll post their rankings soon.

9 (7) Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) Week 6
10 (8) Frankenweenie (Disney) Week 2
Ranking based on revenue (12/22-23)

*Figures Reported Below Included Monday for a 3-Day Weekend (12/22-24)*

One Piece Film Z remains incredibly strong atop the box office attracting 835,720 admissions to earn ¥1,021,810,350 ($12.2 million) over the 3-day weekend. And after only 10 days in release, it's total is an outstanding ¥3,176,367,450 ($38.1 million) with 2,611,284 admissions. That's the biggest second week total since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It's also holding a lot better than it's predecessor, and will cruise past ¥6 billion ($75 million). Can it reach ¥7 billion ($85 million)? It'll remain without much competition for it's #1 spot until mid/late January.

Les Miserables debuted in a solid second on 360 screens. Over the weekend frame (Sat-Sun), the film earned ¥295,416,850 ($3.6 million) with 229,225 admissions. And since opening on Friday, it's 4-day total is an excellent ¥536,178,950 ($6.5 million) with 419,361 admissions. A total of ¥3 billion ($37 million) or more is pretty likely, easily making it the highest grossing imported film this New Year ahead of 007: Skyfall and toppling The Hobbit. I'm going to project ¥3.2-3.4 billion ($39-42 million).

Ooku: The Inner Chambers 2 opened on 307 screens and was off to a very slow start. It actually fell short of a ¥100 million opening with ¥97,164,100 ($1.2 million) on 77,319 admissions over the weekend frame (Sat-Sun) and brought it's 3-day total to only ¥138,269,600 ($1.6 million) on 110,512 admissions. It will need to rely heavily on it's female demographic through the weekdays if it wants to recover and post a respectable total in the end.

Are cinema chains ranked by admissions or gross? Because it wouldn't sense if Hobbit's in the top 3 for the weekend in gross if it hasn't hit the top 3 in any theater chain. And Skyfall is ahead of The Hobbit at the theater chains where they both placed.

Cinema chains are ranked by admissions. When I post the Weekend Rankings it's almost always by admissions, too, unless the ranking is available by gross like this weekend was,

The Weekend Ranking by Admissions was:

1 One Piece
2 Les Miserables
3 Today, I Started Loving You
4 Skyfall
5 The Hobbit
6 Kamen Rider
7 Humanoid Monster
8 Ooku 2
9 Evangelion 3.0
10 Frankenweenie

Usually just the Top 5 ranking by gross is available when the Top 10 ranking by admissions is released, so I rarely post it. I think I'll begin posting both each weekend, though.

There typically isn't much of a difference on the two rankings, but there are several films in release right now that are ranking higher/lower on both charts due to the big difference in ticket prices (i.e. Today, I Started Loving You's avg. ticket price is well below the national avg. since it skews female (90% on opening weekend) Vs. The Hobbit's which are above the national avg. thanks to 3D).

And females get some sort of discount, right? I think you mentioned it once before.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) 12/22-23, Weekend Ranking
Yeah, every major chain participates in Ladies' Day (40% discount tickets) every Wednesday. This really drives down the avg. ticket price for any film that skews female. In addition to this, females attend movies much more often than males in Japan. It's uncommon to find a weekend breakdown where males are over 50%.

And most films that skew heavily female (80% or more is actually fairy common) tend to skew younger toward high school or college aged girls, generally romance films like Today, I Started Loving You, and all high school/college students in Japan get ticket discounts as well at every major chain I've seen.

There's practically a discount available for everyone in some manner, though, with adult males between 25-60 having the fewest options. The general admission fee at most locations in Japan is 1,600-1,800 yen ($20-22) vs. the yearly national avg. of ~1,250 yen ($15-16).

Yearly Box Office Update

Top Distributor Toho earned ¥5,282,073,310 ($64 million) for the month of November, up 1% over last November, to bring their 11-month total to a record ¥69,938,782,046 ($848 million), up 29% over last year and up 2% over their record 2010 year.

For December they have 'Inazuma Eleven', 'Today, I Started Loving You', 'Humanoid Monster', and 'Blue Exorcist' releasing this upcoming weekend. Not too impressive, but combined these films should earn approx. ¥3.3 billion ($40 million) for the month. Factor in the many holdovers from November and earlier months, and Toho should reach close to ¥4.5 billion ($55 million) for December and about ¥74/75 billion ($900-915 million) for 2012.

The overall yearly Box Office (1/1-12/31) looks headed for approx. ¥190/195 billion ($2.3/2.4 billion) and ~150 million admissions thanks to a great boost from 'Evangelion 3.0' and 'One Piece Film Z' which will combine for ~¥10 billion ($120 million) by year's end.

The Final Totals (any film marked by FT) for the Top 10 of 2012 (minus Evangelion 3.0 which is still in release) has been released and updated on the charts above.

Source: http://www.oricon.co.jp/entertainment/s ... age/339/2/

Not all the figures have been released for the 2013 releases but I'll post those charts sometime soon.

Top Grossing Films: In Release
Top Opening Weekends: Debut
Following Tracking: TE (Temporary Estimate) / OE (Official Estimate) / FT (Final Total)
