Looks like there will be a miniscule drop of 3 % to 1,050,000 admissions in its 2nd weekend in Germany...

Around $2.3m first day in Russia on 2195 screens (new record). Kinda dissapointing.

Well in the past few years we have seen how much 3D helps movies overseas. Hobbit should have had no problem reaching that number.

New record 2195 screens. Gross... not so much. Barely in 2012 top ten.

Still, I think Skyfall and Intouchables are out of reach here for The Hobbit, but it might get past Ice Age 4!

In fact, Hobbit is THE movie that will make me start doubting the idea that 3D helps 3D grosses tremendously. It is the one movie that proves this rule wrong.

If even 3D doesn't help 3D grosses - - nothing will.

$91m / $284m

Rather underwhelming, considering it opened in Russia this weekend. Had hoped for $100m. Hopefully, next week makes up for it...

There is nothing to say for the OS drop this movie is having. Should still clear $500m OS IMO but $600m or even $700m for $1b WW seems out of reach though it has two more weekends over holidays to make good money.

It dropped 14.7% in Holland for a €1,513,120 weekend and a €4,317,072 total. Not bad, but it kind of pales in comparison to Skyfall's €2.9 million second weekend (off 3%) and €7.3 million total after the 2nd weekend.

Updated OS numbers: $96m weekend / $288.5m total.

I still can't believe how bad it is doing. People really have forgotten LotR and don't care anymore. It hasn't become a classic like Star Wars, or even Indiana Jones or Toy Story.

Its a shame because as a trilogy, LOTR is better than all of the above. Now granted in terms of single films the other trilogies may hit higher highs but overall I dont see why LOTR should be forgotten.

There's not the slightest possibility that The Hobbit is not as good a movie as LOTR?

It's just as good.

But to be engaged in long franchises and finally get to the end is a nice feeling, and so perhaps the masses didn't want to get back into it again. I know it was only 3 years, but it felt longer. It's making decent money anyway, just not as crazy as expected for such a renowned series.

No, because Hobbit started disappointing right away, on its opening weekends worldwide. It wasn't affected by word of mouth. Sure the reviews were average, but that hasn't stopped other movies with bad reviews to become hits.

If it didn't have 3D, one could say that its performance is disapointing, but not catastrophic. But it has 3D, so it's awful.

It's not awful at all. You're a cocktail of "over-comparing" mixed with a shit-load of "too much expectation".

Take it as a film that has come out and compare it to all other films in the year...would you still say it's "awful"? Puh-lease. Take a step back. It's doing fucking awesome business, and will finish with $280m, ranking 3rd or 4th for the year (the same as FOTR).
