:nerd:

Pretty much, but they do specifically mention why it wasnt as good (48fps, over long, boring etc).

Post Re: Early Reviews Of Hobbit Go From Bad To Worse!
Here's an excerpt from a "Fresh" review from one of RT's Top Critics, James Berardinelli:

Quote:
"An Unexpected Journey is a competent, entertaining effort but it neither enthralls nor amazes in the way its predecessors did. There's no question that Jackson is attempting to recapture something elusive and, although there are stretches when he comes close, he never quite attains that goal. It would be monumentally unfair to label The Hobbit as a "failure," but calling it a "disappointment" would be reasonable.

An Unexpected Journey does not earn its 168-minute running time. From the beginning, there's a sense of bloating and self-indulgence. Roughly the first half requires a dose of caffeine to stay awake and focused.... a strong ending cannot fully compensate for the way the movie meanders and stumbles during its first two hours. I think there's a very good, perhaps even a great, movie contained within An Unexpected Journey, but a ruthless editor was needed to unearth it. Perhaps the DVD Special Edition for this picture should feature less footage rather than more.

My sense is that Tolkien die-hards (as opposed to Tolkien "purists") will adore what The Hobbit has to offer. The slow, uneven pace won't bother them and the "less is more" argument won't faze them. I wonder, however, whether An Unexpected Journey is strong enough to convert a non-believer. The most common complaint will almost certainly relate to the length.... A portion of An Unexpected Journey's audience is going to find this movie interminable."

You are still going to see it, right, Bradley?

I love LOTR but I'm actually more excited for the 48 fps than for the movie itself.

That is the mindset that buys the new iPhone.

Here's a perfect grab quote for the print ads from the latest review:

Quote:
"The Hobbit is one of the most excruciatingly boring movies out this year."

I just can't believe the movie is almost 3 hours. I mean, I can, but...ugh, kind of.

Perhaps you might reconsider your strategy - - according to today's otherwise fairly positive NewYork Post review:

Quote:
"I’d stick with the more traditional version of “The Hobbit’’ unless you want to watch a “film’’ where you’re constantly yanked out of the story by sets and props that look like sets and props — plus flattened lighting effects like those you’d find in a TV miniseries."

That's not even a possible scenario, though, because Bradley would just lie. He's too proud.

I'd put money on audiences loving it, and critics disliking it.

MONEY.

Is the film somewhat critic proof?

I'd say no. Critics will hurt it in the long run and hurt its chances of getting an Awards buzz. But what is great is that the following two movies will be brilliant. I mean, how can a critic not like them after being so disappointed with the first one, it gives the production team a lot of freedom.

Or, like LOTR, didn't they make all three films at once?

They did.

What I meant was that the filmmakers will have an easy time because of low expectations from the first movie.

I bet he's praying God to not enjoy it once he goes to see it.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in his cinema. I bet he bloody loves it.

Post Re: Early Reviews Of Hobbit Go From Bad To Worse!
Today, I have a collection of quotes exclusively from the so-called "fresh" reviews of The Hobbit:

Quote:
The high frame rate, or HFR, version of "The Hobbit" has such crystalline, videolike clarity that it reduces everything and everybody to mere props and actors. Swords lack heft, the castles look like dioramas, and light never looks natural, even when it is. The result is a movie about magic that somehow has none. >

Quote:
Sluggish and lacks a sense of momentum. There’s a tonal problem, too, as the early dominance of knockabout comedy gives the film an alienating whiff of kids’ TV. 3 out of 5. >

Quote:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is, well, an unexpected disappointment. 3 out of 5. >

Quote:
Jackson seems desperate to tie this in with his previous trilogy. All of the added scenes designed to make this film part of his Tolkien ‘whole’ are by far the most unnecessary. 3 out of 5.>

Quote:
It reminds me of the look of a soap opera, a look that doesn’t belong in a movie theater. I’m not trying to sound like a purist. I really like to see progress and want to believe there is something to the technology, but I found myself concentrating more on the strange look of the film and less on the film itself.... Also a major distraction here is the length. Making one book three movies? It feels greedy.>

Quote:
“The Hobbit” is a decent but ultimately unexciting film, one that suffers from excessive running time, uneven pacing, and most important of all, a tale that’s too episodic and fractured, lacking the narrative pull and emotional investment that each of the three segments of “The Lord of the Rings”. B >

Quote:
The Hobbit was always a brisk adventure story, which Jackson has attempted to transform into an epic on the scale of Tolkein‘s subsequent magnum opus with mixed results.... An Unexpected Journey is unlikely to garner the series any new fans. This film is pure excess that’s almost definitely motivated by studio greed. 3 out of 5. >

Quote:
"An Unexpected Journey" is a competent ride, but as a whole it lacks purpose, giving the impression of a television program in its later seasons still chugging along while fully aware that it has peaked. B >

Quote:
Let's put it this way… if Tom Bombadil came from "The Hobbit" and not "Lord Of The Rings," fans would be listening to Tom sing every word of ever song and watching him prance about in vivid 48FPS 3D this Christmas. >

Surely "3 out of 5" and "B" equate to be "fresh"..

Those who get "fresh" grades like that in college are gonna be competing to get a job at McDonalds.
