Not if being a "real movie" requires being shown in theatres.

Re: Get the Gringo
The fact that Mel Gibson in a starring role went straight to DVD is lol-worthy. Who would have seen that coming in the 90s.

It got a release in the UK. I went to see it. I love Mel Gibson. The alternative title is far better (How I Spent My Summer Vacation).
I loved it. Thought it was Mel back to his badass best. See it if you love the Payback character.

Re: Get the Gringo
I was excited to watch it, but this film just did not fly, in my opinion. Mel Gibson remains a genuine movie star, and the initial concept (a resourceful thief trying to survive in a, I presume, heightened, almost psychedelic vision of a Mexican prison) is engaging in large part due to the novel location, but the film often tries too hard. It is so desperate to be hilarious, to be exciting, to be unique, it ends up exhausting and overcharged. And the more absurd and expansive the storyline becomes (by the time, for instance, Gibson blows up the top of a skyscraper), the harder it is to care.

Get the Gringo
I've just watched it again since seeing it cinemas. I still love it. Mel Gibson just makes great movies. He keeps making entertaining stories and likeable roles. Out of all of my admissions in 2012, How I Spent My Summer Vacation is the one I'm most proud of. I was supporting a man that has had a tough time in the media. I knew he needed his fans' support, and I acted when it mattered most. Shame that others didn't and the film laregely went unnoticed in the UK (and everywhere), but I did my bit.

Re: Get the Gringo
After the first 20 minutes I'd call it Payback in espanol, but wow what a pleasant surprise. I was expecting it to be really cheap and Gibson to be laughable, and for the first half you really can't get past that ok Gibson is crazy now, and this is a knockoff of another film and god dam he looks really old.
But by the end, I didn't care. In fact I kind of loved it. I thought the film was funny, cool, and kind of a nice redemption for Gibson as Edge of Darkness was very bleh. The kind of film 10 years ago you would never expect from Gibson, but give it a chance, you'll have a good time. The last 20 minutes are pretty awesome, and the rest is just fun. A-
