Post Skyfall > 220 million - Club
Image

I believe Skyfall is going to easily become the number-one film (unadjusted) of the Bond franchise and, adjusted, the highest grossing entry of the Dalton/Brosnan/Craig era, topping Die Another Day's 218 million.

It has a great release date. No major competition for over a month (no major non-family films want to contend with this and Twilight, so they have complete breathing room until The Hobbit in mid-December). Also, I just sense the people involved, from Daniel Craig to the producers, know how important this film is after the tepidly received Quantum of Solace. They are, as far as I can see, dead set on creating a beloved and definitive Bond adventure this time around.

My prediction: 75/230

I wish this club the best of luck, but Quantum of Solace's reception will be too much to overcome. $185m feels right, so out.

My only issue is that QoS turned many off which will hurt this a little.

Still, as long as this is good (which I suspect it will be), a 3 multiplier is definitely doable from an expected $75m-ish OW, so yeah I'm in.

Why is Dalton in the Craig/ Brosnan era? He was still part of the Cold War

I do like this club, the 50 year anniversary should be played up as well. I think it's definitely going to take the highest grossing bond. I'm thinking 190-220. The first teaser was kind of crap though. I'll probably join after a real trailer.

I'm leaning towards no. I don't think it'll do more than MI4.

Didn't like the first teaser as much I generally do. There are too many high profile movies around it though none directly aiming to its male audience. QoS might be too difficult to overcome.

Still these movies have been generating a little constant number and haven't fallen like MI series in total gross. With inflation there is a chance that this movie makes more for about $190m total.

I want to see a real trailer before I join. I do think it is achievable but the marketing has to place it somewhere close to epic and market it with the 50 year anniversary logos. Plus they need to show more of the difference in storyline this time. If they can manage these things then $220 is done.

A new short film featuring Craig as Bond will reportedly be part of Danny Boyle's opening ceremony for the London Olympics.

Epic free advertising.

I'm sure video content has been created for opening ceremonies before, but not with James Bond. ;) London last hosted the Olympics in the forties, and the 2012 opening ceremony is reportedly heavily focused on pop culture, so I'm sure they will try to reference as many of the intervening decades' "institutions" as they can. A Bond short film, a performance by Paul McCartney, etc.

Nah. 190 million. Better legs than QOS though.

$220M? Whatttt. I think $175M would be great considering how bland Quantum was. Why would it get a $50M boost? Is it in 3d?

Craig is expected to drop down from a helicopter. Great advertising.

I think beating Quantum would be an achievement. This is a four year in waiting response to a mediocre poorly received film, why would it mysteriously increase 50m?
I would only be a little surprised to see Bourne Legacy beat Skyfall.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Inflation in four years could be a very good reason. To reach QoS's total Skyfall needs only 75% of admissions.

Bond is an enduring franchise that won't be severely hurt by mediocre WOM. I'm not sure Quantum of Solace was so much more poorly received than say Tomorrow Never Dies. Still this club will require the film being a Casino Royale level WOM hit. Which at this point seems very possible.

Still, not in. 71/195

lol, what do you think Casino Royale's 40m OW after the bad reception from Die Another Day? I know that also had the actor switch, but I don't think you can argue with 4 years of inflation that Casino Royale wound up as the highest grossing bond movie at the time just because the brand endures and time passed. It was because that particular movie had excellent reception and great holiday legs with it. Quantum also shows the importance of the individual opening 20m higher than any bond movie before, 27m higher than Casino, and winding up with only 1m more than Casino. Individual, current wom matters a lot in this series looking at grosses, and this had better look incredible and be better to cross 200m considering the buzz around the last bond film/daniel craig's bond atm.

WOM is absolutely necessary cause this movie will open a little lower or just equal to QoS but the legs will be determined by how the movie is received.

I totally agree that this club is only possible with EXCELLENT word of mouth. I don't agree that QoS -> Skyfall is a valid comparison though. Die Another Day was plenty popular among many (look at it's legs) but rebooting with a blond Bond had a learning curve. Daniel Craig seems accepted as Bond, and I'm sure it will look plenty impressive.

I can't possibly see where that would suddenly come from. I'd consider 140m more likely in this universe.

So you think having lower attendance than any Bond film in over twenty years is less likely than it matching the attendance levels of either Tomorrow Never Dies or Die Another Day?
