Jeff Who Lives At Home may be one of the biggest surprises of the year. I wasn't expecting this to be bad, but I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed this. The story is fairly simple, Jeff (Jason Segel) lives at home and has to go get wood glue to fix a cabinet door or else his mother (Susan Sarandon) will kick him out. On his way there, an entire story pieces together where Jeff finds his true calling for life, trying to reconnect with his brother (Ed Helms), and try to help his brother and his brother's wife's (Judy Greer) marriage. It has its good share of funny moments but the drama the film portrays so well is what gives it the extra step. It is the Duplass brothers best film yet and one of the best films of the year. ****

I did, too  Actually, I would say I was firmly "not enjoying" for a while there until the last half hour or so when "not enjoying" actively doubled and then tripled pretty quickly once the movie ended.

What inspired your hatred?

I wouldn't know where to begin, so I'll just throw out a few points:

- The annoying camera work. Were all the zooms supposed to make the movie "dynamic"? Or why the hell were there so many zoom-in's? They served ABSOLUTELY no purpose and were tremendously irritating.
- The mother's subplot was absolutely unnecessary
- The whole "Signs"-thing was beyond ridiculous. Once Jeff jumped into the water at the end, I just KNEW the person he'd save be named Kevin. Which, I suppose, in a way proves his point. That annoyed me because honestly, he is just crazy. Mentally slightly disturbed and they make him out to be the smart one.
- Ed Helms' character was such an unlikeable asshole. There was no point where I rooted for him to get back with his wife
- What's with Judy Greer? Is she now being typecast as the sufferign wife?
- The whole "indie dramedy music" score was generic and annoying as hell

Those are just a few of the reasons.

How do you spot the likely assholes?

Aww, how boring. I thought you had an asshole-probability system.

I agree with that. I felt sorry for her character more than him. I wouldn't want to stay with him either.

Nice film, even if a strong wind could blow it to the next state. ;) It feels incomplete in certain ways. As if we are viewing 85% of a great film. Still, though, it's charming and has a few worthy insights to share regarding family, relationships, and life itself. The performances are strong. The integration of Signs (yes, the Mel Gibson movie) is strange and, in the end, effective.

On the whole, I enjoyed it, and I've certainly seen far more expensive films do less with over 120 minutes than this low-key enterprise does with around 75.

Jeff Who Lives at Home

I enjoyed this. Two brothers, with clearly different personalities and outlooks on life, and in completely different situations in life, interact with such realism. This means it's a great script. The realisation at the end was fine, but not the wow-moment the director expected it to be, but still fine enough. It's a humorous film. Jason Segel, yet again, is just a joy to watch, and is a very talented actor (he's just getting all the same roles). Ed Helms was great too. Susan Sarandon's storyline didn't do anything for me. But it was great to see Rae Dawn Chong. I haven't seen her since 1985 in Commando.

All in all, a nice film.

A movie about a mother and her two sons each wandering about life and finally finding a moment of enlightenment. The feel-good story could be a cliched one if not handled well. But the Duplass Brothers know how to make the story flow smoothly with a good sense of lightness and humor. I was entertained.
