Re: Prometheus
Only one is. The Sean Harris character, who has been established as cynical and nervous from the beginning, doesn't react positively to the creature. It's the nerdy biologist who is excited by it. And he still doesn't touch it so much as try to get a response from it and see how it behaves.

He certainly does try to stop it, he just jumps back when it hisses. At which point he tries to tough it again.

Re: Prometheus
Yes, it's a bit of a goofy horror-movie scene, it's true. I'm sure the scene in Alien where Skerritt and co. continue to investigate the derelict ship even after seeing an enormous, terrifying alien corpse is a shade implausible, too.

Re: Prometheus
Clearly no one here has spent time around biologists and scientists in general. That's exactly how scientists act around known but rare species, even ones that aren't overly friendly. What I've considered stupid and reckless has been completely normal for them. Now imagine a scientist coming across an undiscovered species. That's exactly how I wold imagine they would act.

I might have bought it if there had been a modicum of character development beforehand or if the characterizations had at least been consistently written.

Would the same biologist piss his pants and want to return to the ship after seeing an alien corpse?
That's the disconnect. It's a stupid slasher movie scene regardless, but his motivations would be mildly acceptable as the first biologist to make alien contact. BUT NOT WHEN HE JUST TRIED TO GO HOME AFTER SEEING HIS FIRST ALIEN.
It's bad writing, period. The character does whatever the scene requires him to do, regardless of anything that's happened previously.
Finally saw this in, in 3D. I thought it was wonderful. Really fascinating stuff.

Re: Prometheus
The cynical snarky types can keep kvetching all they want but Prometheus is clearly an evocative film. As some have said the writing gets a bit spotty especially towards the end but as a twisted take on the creation myth, it works on multiple levels.
It's not us who are cynical, it's the people who made the movie. They just assumed they could cynically slap together some "best of" moments from previous Alien movies (and steal one or two from The Thing) and throw some acclaimed actors in and it would all work out without having to really try.
Look at this scene from the original Alien which by the way was written by Dan O'Bannon who also contributed story ideas for the first sequel.
It's just 4 minutes of a guy quietly moving through a shaft, with little dialog and little action yet it's more riveting than anything in Prometheus. That's moviemaking.

I don't think anyone is saying that Prometheus is better than Alien. We're just saying it's better than Alien 3.

Re: Prometheus
I actually think Alien Resurrection is a better film, its the only film in the franchise that doesn't hide what it is. A fun Sci Fi horror film. And much better than 3 (producers cut not whithstanding) and certainly a more well made film then Prometheus.

Re: Prometheus
I wasn't sure whether whether to place Resurrection right above or right below the first Alien vs. Predator. A decision between a more ambitious film which is also more dispiriting in many respects because it fails to live up to its potential and its best ideas and one which is just a straight, unpretentious, shoot-'em-up roller coaster ride (the type of picture at which Paul W. S. Anderson, in general, excels). I've never understood the hatred of the first Alien vs. Predator. It plays well enough, I'd say, for what it is. Requiem, on the other hand, is a botched abortion of a movie. Not only does it have poor acting, a lax pace, and nonexistent writing, but it causes actual eye-straining physical pain with its profoundly annoying cinematography and lighting.

Re: Prometheus
You'll be surprised Prometheus and AVP have many (very awkward so) similarities
AVP just sucks because its PG-13 and the predator becoming friends with the woman. Everything else even the lack of gruesome violence is actually pretty decent.
Prometheus is not better than Alien. This is an objective fact.

When he first acknowledges it, perhaps. But the eel creature was instantly asserting universal signs of aggression and hostility and the scientist spent another 15 seconds ooing it before it was ripping his arm off. The character is awful, laughably so, as is the construction of this scene.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.
