Post PROMETHEUS (INTL) $272m and counting...
...and so it begins:

Ridley Scott’s scifi thriller won’t debut in the U.S. or Canada until June 8th but it’s already started selling movie tickets in France. Fox’s Prometheus opened with $1.5M (Euros 1.12m) for #1 in the market and 40% market share. It was the 2nd highest opening day of 2012, behind The Avengers but 20% ahead of Men In Black 3 and 87% ahead of The Hunger Games. In fact pre-sales for Prometheus in a number of countries are many times the MIB3 levels and should increase now that reviews are coming out ...
It is debuting 15 international markets (20 countries) this weekend — including the UK, France, Russia, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, and Scandinavia – on 4,700 screens, of which 3,300 are 3D. Right now UK presales are around $1.6M (£1m) already. And the IMAX Southbank alone has sold $810K (£500k) making it the largest ever presales at this screen. After that, Prometheus will open day and date in 35 international markets (49 countries) next weekend, including South Korea, Australia, and Taiwan. That will ensure Ridley Scott’s scifi thriller will play on a total 8,000 screens, of which 5,000 are 3D. Most of Latin America is releasing June 14-15, including Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. Releasing later, to avoid the Euro Cup, is host countries Poland and Ukraine, as well as Germany, Spain and Italy. Japan is releasing in August because it was the best circuit booking available in the Nichigeki 1.

http://www.boxoffice.com/latest-news/20 ... -in-france

Fox’s Prometheus is having “a fantastic start” internationally this weekend before it opens in North America next Friday, according to the studio. The scifi film opened head-to-head with Snow White in the UK. Today Fox said Prometheus is 319% of the Snow White opening there, and 161% of both Snow White and holdover Men In Black 3. It’s also the biggest opening day for a Ridley Scott film ever in the UK. “We have had a superb start with Prometheus opening a clear No. 1 grossing £2.2m ($3.39M). This includes an estimated £200k ($306K) from special midnight screenings on Thursday.” A high 76% is from 3D, which includes 6.74% from IMAX. Most of the IMAX shows were only playing one evening performance on top of MIB3 because Sony had a 2-week agreement with IMAX digital. The two x70mm IMAX sites (Southbank in London and Manchester) played all day and reported every show including lates were sold out in advance. The foreign cume for Wednesday and Thursday in the eight markets released there was $5.5M. In addition to the UK, countries Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Latvia opened Friday.

Impressive numbers though I still doubt it would make more than $300m OS

It must be a big success. Studios need to be encouraged to put out more sci-fi films like this.

I think this looks good, however I thought this was going to more of a sci fi epic rather then sci fi horror film.

Pretty good, it opened in quite a few new markets, though (but only two bigger ones - Australia & Korea).

Good to know that the movie will cross $250m OS for sure. With $350m WW total assured I think there could be a chance for a sequel.

I'm pretty sure this isn't done overseas until October, but any idea where it'll end up? Is 350mil WW doable?

Yeah this is holding up surprisingly well with no new markets IMO. I think $350m is doable but more than that would depend on how well it holds.

It still has Germany, Spain, Italy and Japan ahead, its performance there is just as important (if not moreso) than how well it holds in other territories.

^ Absolutely holding into new markets is definitely a key for it. That's what I meant when I said that it needs to hold well. The major concern is over the expectations from this movie and then the competition. As of now the competition is not as big for males. But with Spidey and TDKR coming up it really needs to over-perform and have good holds to reach $350m OS total.

Are we talking about WW or OS? Some say WW, some say OS, when talking about the 350 million number... Just trying to clear up the confusion.

Including the domestic market, it's at 284 million now. With Germany, Spain, Italy and Japan ahead, it will clear out 350 WW easily, but 350 million OS would be a big struggle and would require some real stamina. That number would put the WW tally to around 480+ million in the end.

My guess is that it will end up pretty much exactly at 400 million worldwide. I loved the film, and I would love a sequel. But the domestic performance might be seen as too disappointing by studio to greenlight a sequel. The problem is not the B.O number by itself, but the so-so legs and mixed WOM. It's questionable how much demand there is for a big budget sequel.

I was talking about $350m OS total which would mean it WILL get a sequel. I just saw that it has already been released in 58 markets which means it really won't get $350m OS total, there is still a chance for $300m OS total IMO.
