Adam Sandler returns to sports comedy (with Ferell!)
"Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the field...Adam Sandler strikes! It looks like a scheduling conflict with Mark Wahlberg has caused THE OTHER GUYS actor to drop out of the planned football comedy THREE MISSISSIPPI with Will Ferrell, giving Sandler a shot at the draft.
Now, it appears we'll have our first Will Ferrell/Adam Sandler team up since their SNL days, while Wahlberg takes on a role in Peter Berg's simultaneously shooting LONE SURVIVOR.
THREE MISSISSIPPI is a "tale of two rival families who have an annual tackle football game at Thanksgiving — with one family (Wahlberg’s-now, Sandler's) the perennial loser." Hijinks ensue, etc."http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/adam-sa ... ll-ferrell__________________________________________________________________________ Surefire $100+ million hit.

With his consistency and usually projects, I think Sandler will become the first actor with 20 $100+ million domestic hits.

Since it's a Gary Sanchez production, hopefully it will be of higher quality than Sandler's usual Happy Madison output thus creating strong longevity at the box office.

Fifteen if you remove Austin Powers in Goldmember (fair enough, cameo) and Tropic Thunder (questionable; peripheral role, but he did receive a Golden Globe nomination for it and lots of media attention). Sandler has twelve. If Jack Reacher and Oblivion connect as intended, Cruise would have seventeen/nineteen. Give him another for the inevitable M:I-4, and he would be at eighteen/twenty. Sandler has seven to go. And while he's consistent, he's had misses and near misses lately (Funny People, Jack and Jill, Just Go with It only barely made it to 100 million). Samuel L. Jackson has fifteen or sixteen by my count, though, of course, his number is wildly skewed by the Star Wars and Marvel franchises. I must admit, I had never thought of this record before. It's fun. I hope Cruise beats Sandler.

You can't return to comedy if you've never done comedy before.

I'd say Sandler should definitely sign on to this if he hasn't already.

He may have a couple more, but his fans are not getting younger, and his pull seems to finally be diminishing. Besides, it's not just him, but all 'movie comedy' that seems to be running out of quick concepts.

Besides, it's not just him, but all 'movie comedy' that seems to be running out of quick concepts. Particularly solo films. Stars seem less likely nowadays to perform well box office wise on their own anymore. Sandler can still be considered a huge star, but yeah his pull is diminishing (Andy Samberg is nowhere near star status yet). Ferrell doesn't seem to have a strong batting average going solo, looking at films like Semi-Pro and Land of the Lost. He seems to thrive most on team-ups, like Blades of Glory, Step Brothers, and The Other Guys, and we'll see how well The Campaign does (however I'm personally expecting 21 Jump Street to be the only comedy this year to gross over 100M which it has already comfortably done). Both Sandler and Ferrell could be considered the biggest stars in comedy despite recent troubles and thus this could be highly lucrative for the both of them. I'm hoping/expecting Sandler to keep his scrummy little paws off the screenplay and away from the creative control.

I think it's partially circular. Projects and buzz used to be tailored to stars which helped the system feed itself and allowed those sorts of movies a better shot.

Still, solo films don't seem to cut it anymore. Team-ups seem more lucrative now, particularly unlikely team-ups. As in the team-ups between Sandler and one of his Siamese butt buddies don't really do the trick, now.
