Post Early Saturday
Surprised this isn't up yet.

Quote:
SSATURDAY 9:45 PM, 8TH UPDATE… EXCLUSIVE: My sources say this opening weekend’s North American grosses for Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games are likely a humongous $150 million after making $68.2M Friday and $49M Saturday. That would be a record-setter: the 4th all-time biggest opening three-day weekend, beating all the Twilight Saga films but not 2008′s The Dark Knight, and the highest non-sequel opening weekend ever, and the highest March opening weekend ever. The Twilight Saga: New Moon debuted to $142.8M in November 2009, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 opened to $138.1M in November 2011. Numbers refined later tonight.

So I finished Mockingjay...

and my anticipation for it has evaporated. Awful book. To make a good movie, you have to essentially rewrite the book.

Suzanne Collins exposes all her shortcomings as an author. Good thing that the cash from this will keep her rich forever. It'll be even more hilarious to split it into two parts than Breaking Dawn and Twilight is already a joke of a series.

I feel confident in it going up, sellouts are still going on here in Seattle. But of course this is already a huge achievement.

Saturday on par with Friday minus midnight would be sensational, and it'd be the second biggest Sat ever. A better hold than TDK too.

Good hold on Saturday. If 150 million holds, and the WOM is there (which it seems to be), Deathly Hallows Part 2 could be in trouble.

Phenomenal. This should almost guarantee $150+ million for the weekend, and makes passing SM3 very likely (It would need a 28% Sunday drop, which with this amount of business isn't impossible).

It's going to beat it at least in admissions, which is kind of unbelievable (even if I predicted it in the end). The sky is really the limit for this franchise.

I actually like the third book, but you're right, it will make a pretty bad film without some serious editing.

In all reality though, I think this is breaking TDK's OW and may now have a shot at $160M OW.

I think at this point Lionsgate is already salivating at the thought of cutting Mockingjay in half.

I don't really think it's necessary but if it's good for box office then I guess.

Another incredible number. I could list so many accomplishments it just achieved if the number holds, such as beating Alice in Wonderland's OW in two days, nearly beating Twilight's 10-day gross in two days, second biggest Sat. ever, biggest OW outside of Summer, and the list can go on and on.

What are some significant ones some of you can think of?

Very nearly Lionsgate's highest grossing film after two days (only $2m off with this number), and it's going to be damn close to being the most attended opening for a non-sequel.

It's estimated two day total of $117.3 million also puts it in the Top 10 All Time Opening Weekends (unadjusted).

Actually, by the end of the weekend it'll already be the 18th largest movie of all time where a female actor got top billing. By the end of the week it should be in the Top 10, and in a few weeks time it'll pass Eclipse for the #1 spot.
