My guess is that it's the (estimated) PTA minus midnights.

The math doesn't really add up, but I guess is somewhat accurate if the averages she's posting were estimates back then, too?

The Dark Knight - $53 million + $18 million = $71 million vs $67 million actual.
New Moon - $58 million + $26 million = $84 million vs $73 million actual.
Breaking Dawn 1 - $45 million + $30 million = $75 million vs $71 million actual.
Deathly Hallows 2 - $57 million + $43 million = $100 million vs $91 million actual.

So for The Hunger Games, maybe $50 million (using the $12,000 avg. above) + $20 million = $70 million est. OD?
That's what I was leaning towards too, but obviously the day isn't over yet on either coast, so the totals would be even higher. Maybe they're final PTAs for the others too, but she doesn't make that clear either.

These are pretty much the most confounding early estimates in history.

Since Nikki bashed Variety for overprojecting the midnight figure earlier today, she appears unwilling to give any sort of solid numbers until her last update.

So Friday itself more than tripled the midnight. If similar scenario turns out in other theaters, we would be looking at $60m+ for today without midnight, and that doesn't even account for the theaters without midnight showings.

The record is still POTC2, which $56 million in July when matinees are a lot more bustling. I have a very very hard time seeing Hunger top that number, let alone $60 million.

Though I would very much love it if it did.

Do keep in mind, however, that Hunger Games has IMAX and is playing on considerably more screens (I think Pirates 2 had 8,600. Maybe even less).

Same here, too tired. Save a surprise for tomorrow. I conclude that this is already easily the most impressive opening I've ever followed.

If The Hunger Games truly impacts all holdovers heavily, we could see No. 5 film of the weekend failing to crack $2m. Will that be some sort of record? Even when Spider-Man 3 dominated the market with 83% of market share, the No. 5 film that weekend still grossed $2.9m; and if I look at the weekends with lowest #1 grossers, the smallest No. 5 I found is still $2.5m, from The Watcher's second weekend in September 2000.

Hell, when was the last time the #5 movie grossed less than $2 million? I'm not sure I've seen it happen in my 12 years of box office tracking...

I read that that was due to a poor extrapolation on their part. It was thought it had 3,500+ midnight sites, when the actual number was lower. Looking at your thread, it's kind of odd that the count was "only" 2,500. Even Hangover 2 had more locations for midnights.

Some smaller theaters might not have wanted to risk midnights on a non-sequel, thinking only sequels are worth a midnight showing. And there were also weird cases like the theater near Corpse that would only have four midnight showings despite having ten screens. I dunno, it's odd.

Ugh, I NEED SOMETHING SEMI-CONCRETE BEFORE BEDTIME DARNIT.

It's as Jon said. Some theaters were too late to realize this was going to be Harry Potter/Twilight big and either had limited midnight showings, or had no midnights at all. I noticed the latter to be the case in parts of Ohio today when I was checking Friday sellouts across the country. Several of the theaters listed weren't there last night.

Lionsgate's big screen adapation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling young adult novel -- starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth -- drew an A CinemaScore overall on Friday night, with those under the age of 25 giving it a glowing A+ and those over the age of 25, an A-.

Hunger Games is headed for a stellar debut, and is expected to gross as much as $70 million on Friday, putting it on course for a record-breaking debut of $135 million to $145 million (Friday's tally includes $19.7 million in Thursday midnight grosses, the best showing ever for a non-sequel).

Part of the movie's strength is that it is appealing to males as well as females. Males made up 39 percent of Friday night's audience and females, 69 percent. It also is playing evenly in terms of age, another boost.
They're way underestimating the IM if it gets to $70m.

I think that might just be an update of the same figure they've had for the last 6 hours, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, with 70 milllion and only 20 million from midnights, this is headed for at least 150 million. I still think that Friday figure is low, and is probably just a recycled number from their earlier report. I expect the final figure to be closer to 75 million.

If it breaks $50 million for Friday w/o midnights, I think $48 is an absolute minimum for Saturday, just because once you reach $50 million you're almost certainly pushing large portions of potential audience from Friday into Saturday. And from there $30+ million Sunday comes pretty easily. So yeah, a $70 million Friday makes $145 million a low-end for the weekend.

This is the most important advantage The Hunger Games has over Harry Potter, Twilight, and probably other mega blockbusters like Transformers or Batman.

I live in a college town, 5 minutes from campus, and my showing earlier today was one of the most diverse I've seen in a long time. I mentioned part of this in my screen report, but there was an older woman (50+) there with her daughter, a mother and her young son (who was explaining certain parts to his mother), all of them in the same row as me, and an equal amount of males and females that must covered about every age group. The only group that was low in attendance were teens/tweens, but this was just after noon on a Friday.

Hunger Games needs to break the OW record just based off the greatness that was Stanley Tucci in this film.

From Nikki

FRIDAY 11 PM, 6TH UPDATE… EXCLUSIVE: My sources tonight say The Hunger Games is looking to open with $66 million for Friday box office in the U.S. and Canada including the record $19.75M in midnight shows. That puts its 3-day North American weekend gross around $138M. “The West Coast and late shows still need to come in, so this number could bounce around a bit. But, nevertheless it’s everything we thought it to be,” one rival studio exec tells me. This is the biggest movie start ever for Lionsgate, which now can count on a blockbuster bonanza for its franchise trilogy. “I did see some champagne glasses flowing down the hall,” one ecstatic Lionsgate exec gushed to me. Top Friday numbers include the last Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part Two at $91.1M, Twilight Saga: New Moon at $72.7M; The Dark Knight at $67.2M; Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part One at $61.7M. Audiences gave The Hunger Games an ‘A’ Cinemascore with under-age 18 teens/tweens rating it ’A+’.

Outstanding opening day, cant wait for the official estimate.

Better than Andy Serkis even?
