 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
Not this time, though. I can't see Apes losing. It's too heralded an achievement. And it's an opportunity for them to indirectly honor Andy Serkis because God knows they won't give him an acting nomination.
Hugo will dominate other technical categories.

Transformers 3 is also vulnerable for a nom, given the last one wasn't nominated with bigger box office.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
This category seems fairly open. Two slots at least. Hugo, Potter, and Apes seem safe.
They've loved and nominated every Pirates movie to date, but On Stranger Tides is obviously a minor entry, with no Davy Jones wow factor.
And they have shown no love for Transformers in the past. The first movie lost to The Golden Compass and, as xiayun points out, they didn't even bother nominating Revenge of the Fallen.
I'm predicting The Tree of Life to honor Douglas Trumbull and his practical-effects/2001 legacy. And then a stray, random nod for Captain America.

 Re: Best Visual Effects 2011
The second Transformers would have gotten in with five slots.
