Rango should still (deservingly) be the frontrunner at this point.

Re: With Cars 2 out, what might win the animated Oscar?
http://www.thewrap.com/awards/column-po ... nees-31791Quote: But if it does make the cut, and if the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch approves the entries of "The Adventures of Tintin," "Happy Feet Two" and "Mars Needs Moms," the number of qualifying films will reach 16, the number required to trigger a full five nominees.
Filmmakers for those three films have been asked to tell the branch about their intent in using the motion-capture technique, which by itself is not deemed "animation" by the Academy.
But with Steven Spielberg directing "The Adventures of Tintin," and with "Happy Feet Two" being the sequel to a film that won the Animated Feature Oscar in 2006, most insiders in the category expect the films to be approved.

Puss in Boots is looking good for a nomination: 85%/7.2 at RT so far and strong box office on the way.

Re: With Cars 2 out, what might win the animated Oscar?
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/11/04/tintin-rango-and-smurfs-to-tangle-for-best-animated-oscar/Quote: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 18 animated films have been submitted for consideration in the Best Animated Feature Film category at next February’s Oscars, including Steven Spielberg’s performance-capture based The Adventures of Tintin and the animation/live-action hybrid The Smurfs.
Academy rules state that as long as at least 16 films are submitted, then five will ultimately be nominated. (Last year, Toy Story 3 won the Oscar in a race of only three nominated movies.)
It’s also worth noting that an animation/live-action hybrid like The Smurfs has never been nominated in this category. A spokesperson for the Academy carefully explained that this is only a list of submitted films from the studios, and should not yet be interpreted as an endorsement that all the films have met the category’s criteria.
The 16 other films that were submitted include:
Alois Nebel Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Arthur Christmas Cars 2 A Cat in Paris Chico & Rita Gnomeo & Juliet Happy Feet Two Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil Kung Fu Panda 2 Mars Needs Moms Puss in Boots Rango Rio Winnie the Pooh Wrinkles My guess for nominees: The Adventures of Tintin Puss in Boots Rango Winnie the Pooh One of the foreign ones

Re: With Cars 2 out, what might win the animated Oscar?
While neither The Smurfs or Alvin are likely to be nominated, I wonder if Sony and Fox are submitting them in order to give Arthur Christmas and Rio a shot at nomination. I feel that they should expand it to five nomination as a lot of films like Tangled and Despicable Me at this years Oscars missed out on a nomination because of that rule.
My pick for nominations are: The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn Rango Arthur Christmas Cars 2 Chico and Rita

They might as well have nominated Avatar for best animated feature in '09.

I guess they still have issues with mo-cap.

By 'discovered on DVD,' did you mean sell significantly less copies than its predecessor?

(Fun Fact: Only two movies in the past two years have sold more DVD's than the original Kung Fu Panda - - Avatar & Toy Story 3.)

"The past two years"
So you're avoiding having Iron Man, TDK, Wall-E, Up, Twilight, and Transformers 2 count? Anyway, while I don't know units sold for KFP, I'm pretty sure both Twilight sequels beat it.
Besides, DVD sales are declining.

But why are you comparing the original Kung Fu Panda only to movies released in 2010 and 2011 whereas KFP was relesased in 2008?
