 The Order (2003)
The Order Quote: The Order, also known as The Sin Eater, is a 2003 mystery horror film written and directed by Brian Helgeland, starring Heath Ledger, Benno Fürmann, Mark Addy, and Shannyn Sossamon. Helgeland directed Ledger, Addy and Sossamon in the 2001 film A Knight's Tale.
The film revolves around the investigation of the suspicious death of an excommunicated priest and the discovery of a Sin Eater headquartered in Rome.

 Re: The Order (2003)
"I shit. I fuck. I shave. Does that make me a man?"
Is that a quote from 1940s classic Casablanca? Or 1939 favorite Gone With the Wind? Nope, it's from the underrated 2003 religious horror flick The Order.
The Order, to me, is like a steak. There are some good bites of meat there that will satisfy you when you get to them, but you have to cut through a lot of fat to get there. As a straight horror flick, it doesn't work. As a horror flick with a light tone, it doesn't work. You can see how people generally hated the film when it was released, and still do. Or they just haven't thought of it since. It was those lowered expectations that left me kind of pleased with the viewing.
It's not perfect, or even any good. But there's a half-decent movie buried somewhere in there, and the half-decent movie is buried beneath laugh-inducing lines like the one above, or Mark Addy's persistent need to call Heath Ledger "spaghetti-o". Speaking of Ledger, he's mostly wooden for the movie, but towards the end, there are flashes of a potential movie star in there. Alas...

I'm not being sarcastic - - that is an authentically superb review, imho. It's funny, demonstrates a flare for improbable context, and is intriguing enough to make me want to see the film. Own it, Mister Ecks, don't be so abashed.
