Post Harry Potter 7.2 and the Oscars
Well, this deserves a thread of its own. So far, the Harry Potter movie with the most nominations was the first one which got three.

Now I won't start arguing for it to get a BP nom. I really don't see that happening. However, with the likes of Inception or The Dark Knight being absent this year, this will likely end up as the best-reviewed blockbuster of the year and should efinitely be a big player in the tech categories.

Look at Dead Man's Chest which wasn't nearly as well-reviewed. Being the ONE huge blockbuster in 2006, it managed to get four Oscar nominations (Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Art Direction).

That's the minimum Harry Potter is getting, especially with the huge Battle of Hogwarts scenes it'll have. Right now I'm seeing:

Best Visual Effects
Best Art Direction
Best Sound Mixing
Best Sound Editing

Best Score (Desplat!)
Best Cinematography

Best Makeup is a fair shot as well. Costume Design is more of a longshot I suppose.

I also expect it to win at least three of the above.

I dunno, I think Desplat is more likely to get nominated for The Tree of Life.

He could also score a double nod like John Williams did a couple of times. He was also nominated for A.I. the same year he got a nom for the first Harry Potter.

The Tree of Life utilizes so many classical pieces, though. Might overshadow Desplat's contributions in many's eyes.

It probably has a good shot in Makeup as well since they make certain characters look older. I also wouldn't rule out Rickman for Supporting Actor. Rickman is very well liked and if WB campaigns for him he could get a nod.

Using classical pieces didn't prevent Desplat from getting a nom for King's Speech though.

It'll get as many acting nominations as ROTK.

I actually think that Emma Watson deserves a nomination too. She has been great as Hermione since the very first movie.

Ugh. Unless Desplat has improved 100% from DH 1, he doesn't deserve a score nom. His music for DH 1 was... non-existent! There was no real HOOK. So far, best HP score was for HBP.

TOTALLY pulling for Alan to get a nom (and win). I always would have pulled for it but not really thought it a possibility, but with all the great reviews, and with DanRad so vocally pulling for Alan to get nommed, I'm totally for it.

I'm not going to dismiss its BP so easily. I agree that it would have had a much better chance before the last rule change, but with 95%/8.2 at RT, 90 and 5 100s already at MC, 95 at BFCA, the reviews are close to the LOTR territory now.

Having seen it....I don't see a BP nom. The year would have to be very weak. Not that I didn't like it...but it won't happen. Not for a half of one movie, even if it is a great half.

However, no way it doesn't win Visual Effects and if there's justice, it should also be the frontrunner for Best Cinematography.

I could see it winning Art Direction. Still wouldn't rule out Rickman getting a nod, but WB needs to campaign for him.

Umm...okay, the reviews for it are fucking insanely-good territory. I might reconsider my stance.

The percentage/scores at RT are mostly above the LOTR flicks , above The Dark Knight, above Inception...above the general awesome-blockbuster territory.

In fact - when did we last have major live action blockbuster with reviews as good as this...?

Now if it also somehow breaks $380 million...I can see WB pushing the living hell out of it for a BP nom.

Did you see the title card for all the classical music pieces used in TTOL? It took up the entire screen. If TWBB couldn't qualify, no way in heck this does.

The six in your original post look solid, Lecter. I think Rickman could pull off a BAFTA nod which would put his name in the race, but it won't actually happen. And if we solidly had ten nominees, I think it would definitely be a contender for Picture, but now it's in the "Very far long-shot" column. It has to receive at least 5% of the first-place votes to be nominated, and I just can't see that happening.

It may also depend on if there is another, more traditional British film to push for their voters.

Flawed comparison. Jonny Greenwood was disqualified because his score incorporated elements from past compositions.

Alexandre Desplat's Tree of Life score is in and of itself original. Though it does still remain to be seen if people even notice it amongst all the famous classical pieces.

I'm not convinced that the voters actually listen to the score by itself, so they'll probably think all those classical pieces are part of Desplat's contribution and vote for it anyway.

For Picture? It'll need: PGA (very likely), WGA (possible), SAG (possible), a BAFTA nom (likely), I think. And I think it'd have to win Best British Film (this is actually pretty possible, unless the Brits want to back something else). But with the current rules, it'd need all of these, and that's a tough nut to crack. Same with Rickman. BAFTA could nominate him, SAG *might*. Even with both, I don't think he'd get in. However, I think Adapted Screenplay is a bit more probable.

Techs, yeah. I think Art Direction and probably Visual Effects are a given.

I really don't see it getting a SAG Ensemble nom.

But PGA and BAFTA BP noms shuld happen.

I guess it's not impossible. It does have a cast and the reviews for it.

Good film, a really competent action/fantasy picture, but utterly undeserving of a Best Picture nomination. Its status as the final film is artificially boosting its reviews, but I don't think it'll resonate with enough people in the industry to be a huge Oscar player.
