I agree. If it opens here I'll certainly see it. Reviews aren't even bad, just mixed so far. Doesn't mean it won't be an enjoyable flick though. I really like Emma Roberts too, and it's nice to see Alicia Silverstone in a movie again.

Rumor was that Fox Searchlight had enforced review embargoes for "The Art of Getting By", so we probably won't see more bad reviews of "The Art of Getting By" until the very last moments.

That said, "The Art of Getting By" should have much more appeal to young women than professional critics.

Fox Searchlight will be very happy if the film can gross close to $5 million in US.

I'm sure their expectations aren't very high so they'd probably be fine with 5 Million. I'd be impressed if it could open to over 1 Million this weekend.

Yes. If Fox Searchlight had higher hope on "The Art of Getting By" , they would open this film in less than 50 theaters or more than 800 theater (like what they did with "The Tree of Life" and "Our Family Wedding").

Most of critically-lambasted niche films, that opened in around 100-600 theaters, would be very lucky to gross $1 million at domestic box office.

I guess Fox Searchlight will be very happy if "The Art of Getting By" can gross around $2.5 million at domestic box office; it would give Fox Searchlight more chance to make modest profit on worldwide ancillary deals and in DVD/Blu-ray market.

BTW, here is the second TV spot of this film.

I've enjoyed the TV spots. I've seen several of them. They've all been on MTV though, but I'm guessing that's not a bad idea. I still think Fox should have aired some.

Post Re: Fox Searchlight's non-Tree of Life summer releases
The opening weekend BO result is terrible.
http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=w ... rk2011.htm

“The Art of Getting By” has been receiving many bad reviews since Sundance 2011, but the film’s opening result is still worse than expected…. (at least it is much worse than what tracking indicted). Based on the box office leg of Fox Searchlight’s other similar releases (ie. “Choke”, “Fast Food Nation”), “The Art of Getting By” will be very lucky to gross $1.5 million at domestic box office (terrible result for a 610 theaters release).
Bad reviews should not be the most major reason why “The Art of Getting By” flops so bad, since some other critically-panned tweeners like Sony Pictures Classics’ “Chloe”, Lionsgate’s “From Prada to Nada”, and even Fox Searchlight’s “Choke” could perform better in fewer theaters and less advertising….. It may indicated that Fox Searchlight mismarkets “The Art of Getting By”. In fact, Fox Searchlight has been exclusively marketed this film to youth audience, and it may turns out to be a big mistake.

PS: Some people think that Sony Pictures Classics is a terrible distributor…. At least, Sony Pictures Classics’ critically-lambasted tweener “Chloe” could perform much better in much fewer theaters and less advertising……

Umm, tweeners?

Anyway, I'm thinking it probably won't get to 2 Million any more. Still think I may check it out this week. Maybe. The bad reviews have made me kind of want to wait for Blu-ray.

tweeners = the films that have neither strong mainstream box office appeal nor mostly good reviews from critics.

“The Art of Getting By” seems like the kind of film that would get may bad reviews no matter how well-made it is. If you are considering whether to watch “The Art of Getting By”, maybe it would be better to rely on twitter reaction instead of critics' reviews.

I don't see why. Plenty of Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach films (and others in the same vein) have received great or at least respectable reviews.

(500) Days of Summer didn't get bad reviews. A good movie is a good movie.

No, "The Art of Getting By" is the kind of film that gets bad reviews because it's bad.

A good movie don't necessary get mostly good reviews. Some kind of movies won't get mostly positive review no matter how well-made they are. Christian movies would be a good example; even "The Passion of the Christ" couldn't get mostly positive reviews. (But "The Passion of the Christ" still received great word-of-mouth and became a surprise box office hit. )
Another good example would be "Twilight" movies (which definitely have much more cultural influence than most of Best Picture Oscar winners in recent 20 years).

Some bad reviews of “The Art of Getting By” complained that the film is too 'mainstream'; for me, it may not be a bad thing.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan has received such bad reviews. We'll see if the book's popularity and its appeal to the generally under-served Asian audience can compensate.

I hope Another Year does well for itself.

Another Earth got off to a decent start. It grossed an estimated $22,600 in 4 theaters on Friday for a PSA of $5,650.

Post Re: Fox Searchlight's non-Tree of Life summer releases
This is going to be a close battle on a very small scale. :P

It's too bad Another Earth is slowing down almost immediately. Will never go very wide. Such a beautiful film! Will be a cult classic.

Searchlight haven't had a great summer. I always thought Snow Flower, due to the novel's popularity and the visual splendor, would breeze past 1 mil. Now it's going to be a slog. The Art of Getting By absolutely flopped (though might still be the biggest of the three). Another Earth received by far the best reviews, but it just doesn't seem to be on people's radars.

And even The Tree of Life...11 mil. is fine and all, especially for such a wild art film, but nothing mind-blowing. Despite a higher profile release date, Brad Pitt, the Cannes win, etc., it's not going to gross much more than The New World, which had worse reviews and was a bit lost in the 2005/2006 prestige pic shuffle.

The Descendants should have no problem being their highest grosser of the year. I hope they can generate decent numbers for Martha Marcy May Marlene. Though it's getting good reviews so far, Like Crazy sounds very similar to The Art of Getting By.

They bungled TOL. Should have gone wide on July 1st.
