 SUPER 8 $300m club
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=46367My first club ever was the STAR TREK $100m opening weekend (and $250m total) club. I got ridiculed and I was laughed at, called names and who knows what... Even so my first club ever technically failed, the $80m opening weekend was much closer to the $100m mark than the majority of predictions which were mostly below the $50m mark. So here I am boldy predicting that SUPER 8 will gross at least $300m and kick of a fabulous summer for Steven Spielberg productions (with TF3 & C&A to follow). To be fair, I have to tell you that I saw 21 minutes of the movie at CinemaCon... My prediction as of today is a $90m opening weekend and $360m total, but I think the $300m mark for this club is enough reason to call me names again, I guess... Who's willing to join my 2nd club?

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
Your Star Trek final prediction was most impressive.
I certainly don't think 300 is laughable but with no built-in audience to speak of from a story/character or actor standpoint it will require legs to get there like Inception, so it better be damn good like Inception. I think opening to 70+ is out of reach.
My two main hesitations otherwise are summer overload and that period sci fi can be a very, very tough sell.
So I have to say I am out.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
This looks like it will be the best movie of the summer. And in a summer full of superhero movies and sequels, I think a truly original film will stand out.

I'm laughing at your... opening weekend prediction. I'll join your $300m club, though. It's the only movie i'm really rooting for this summer, so why not.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
OUT, no way it can top 300m, but 200m looks more likely, so far seems that only internet moviegoers know about Super 8

If Inception couldn't quite do it with Nolan and its WOM, I don't think Super 8 can either.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
There is simply no way this can open to 90m. A completely original sci-fi alien flick just can't get that big of an audience out right away. I do expect incredible legs though and I think it will be the hit of the summer. I think a run very similar to Inception looks likely, maybe 70m OW and 310m total. I'm in.

In. It's a long shot and almost entirely contingent on this being as crowd-pleasing and amazing as the best of classic Spielberg. I have faith it will, and if it is, audiences will respond in a BIG way.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
Nope...but I am not laughing or calling names. Inception with Nolan, WOM and IMAX cannot do it, this will also be a tougher sell minus Nolanites (very big factor). This is a respectable club and if this crosses 250m mark I would consider this club as a mini success

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
The combination of Abrams and Spielberg is bigger than Nolan.

No. I'd love if this happened, but I just can't see it. I don't think it will break $200m.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
It's not that impossible. Adjust Inception and it'll probably make it there, then both Iron Man and Transformers did too.
360 though is. I am out though because there are a lot more potential hits this summer than in 2010 and 2008.
Also that this is a throwback makes it less likely. I'm still over 250m though.

Out and an EPIC FAIL already for this club since this movie is about as likely to get to 300M Domestic as CLOVERFIELD was..

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
This and Cloverfield aren't very similar at all. Maybe on paper, but not once you watch the trailers.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
There is no way this opens to 90 mill and there is no way it will finish with 300 imo. And here's why.
Inception was one of the most anticipated original films in a long time. It had Nolan coming off of TDK, the oscar snub, fanboys drooled over him, Leo was in it and the trailer and concept were something that hadn't been seen before. It only opened to 60 mill or so (Mojo's down so i can't check the exact amount).
Super 8 has a dynamite trailer, but it is not quite shrouded in mystery the way Inception was. I do see the similarities, but not enough to go out on a limb and say it will have the same multiplier (almost 5 for Inception) as Inception.
Now if it is as good as I think/hope it is, it will fly past 200 mill, but a lot depends on the quality and repeat viewings, something Inception had in droves.
I'm willing to give it an opening in the mid 50's and a multiplier of 4. So that leaves me at about 225.
Gutsy club, but I'm out.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
I remember thinking Mark's Star Trek club was the most ridiculous thing ever, especially considering it was coming from someone as knowledgeable as Mark66. However, it proved very impressive.
With this one, I think the OW is completely wrong, it wont open that high. But I do think the film will break out long term and with break outs there are no set rules. Thats why $300m is possible, even though I think $220-$240m is more reasonable and likely.

 Re: SUPER 8 $300m club
As cool as it would be for this to breakout that big I just don't see it happening. It really needs to pick up on the buzz first because there is still no real talk about it if twitter is any indication. I honestly won't be suprised if it doesn't even reach $40M OW, but I expect this to be more of a leggy summer movie anyways. Who knows it could probably reach $200M+ by the end of it's run. It does look AMAZING afterall.
