Plus Crazy Stupid Love and Horrible Bosses. They could actually be on track for a massive summer if both of those films break out in July.

I had to find this out - the last time the biggest May starter was out-opened in April was 2005 when Kingdom of Heaven was schooled by several films, but prior to that it was 1998 when He Got Game was the big May kickoff.

In fact, something in April used to almost exclusively beat the biggest first week of May opener, before The Mummy came along in 1999. My times have changed.

Technically calendar wise this is also more equivalent to the second weekend of May (instead of just the fact that Fast Five opened so big) since it's Mother's Day weekend.

I think we actually have Twister in 1996 to thank for the summer movie season being considered to start in early May.

Pretty much. If we generalize to all pre-Victoria Day "May" starts (Apr 29 - May 14 Fridays) rather than just first weekend of May (as I was doing), Twister (5/10/96) ushered in the summer = early May era.

Prior to that year the biggest opener in the period (adjusted) was the previous year's Crimson Tide (5/12/95), which did less than half of Twister. Before that the biggest Apr or early May opener was Indecent Proposal (4/9/93).

Actually (I know I'm old), CONAN THE BARBARIAN opened May 14th 1982 and delivered the sixth biggest opening weekend of all-time back than ($9.5m)
