Post Fast Five (INTL)
Another movie that opens in some markets ahead of the U.S.

The previous 4 movies got better and better internationally:

1 $63m
2 $109m
3 $96m
4 $198m

I think FAST FIVE will do somewhere between $250m-$350m internationally...

Here's Darling Nikki's first report:
In Australia, films traditionally open on a Thursday, but Universal opened its latest in the street-racing franchise, Fast Five, last night on a Wednesday. Studio estimates show that it grossed $2.4 million (U.S. dollars) for opening day, making it No. 1 in the country for opening day with 41% market share. In U.S. dollar terms, that's the biggest ever Universal opening day in Australia. In Australian dollar terms, it's second only to the fourth film in the franchise, Fast & Furious, which opened on the traditional Thursday. Unfortunately, starting tomorrow, it faces stiff competition from Paramount's Thor opening in Australia. Fast Five opens this week/weekend in four international territories -- the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Korea -- then day and date April 29 in North America and nine more international territories.

Very good opening. Though it would definitely have trouble competing Thor in OS markets.

So I'm wondering what this could make in Australia. With a 2.4 mill OD, that should translate into a 14 mill or so 5 day? More maybe?

^It will drop harder. Similar to domestic market this movie has huge openings and then sees harsh drops. I still expect it to make 12m-14m over the 5-day weekend and then drop harder

But isn't this one better than the previous movies?

I only watched the first one (didn't like it) and never touched the sequels, but I'm actually interested in F&F5...

I think these movies appeal to a particular demo. The expansion ratio for that demo is very less.....unless all of them get really excited and come to see it. Most of reviews I have read said that this is NOT better than the original, though I haven't seen it myself yet.

Darling Nikki:
Well, this is a surprising start for the first two big films of Summer 2011. Marvel/Disney's Thor 3D distributor Paramount opened on Thursday in Down Under thinking its Norse God would steal Fast Five's thunder from Universal which opened their street car racing pic the day before. Didn't happen. Day Two of Fast Five beat Thor by 38% -- $2.02 million U.S. dollars vs 1.5 million U.S. dollars -- even though both films are playing in the same number of theaters (220), Fast Five is only 2D so can't command the higher 3D ticket prices, and Thor's lead Chris Hemsworth is Australian. Universal is crowing that its Day 2 of Fast Five was ahead of Iron Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 and its cume there is now $4.43 million U.S. dollars. Meanwhile, also today, Fast Five's previews in Korea are running 34% bigger than Fast And Furious (the fourquel in the franchise). in North America, Fast Five opens April 29th and Thor on May 6th.

That's great for FF, not so much for Thor. FF really could be a nice breakout.

'Fast Five is only 2D so can't command the higher 3D ticket prices'

Nikki is a puppet, this is really not true, We don't know how many 2D tickets Thor missed out on because of all the 3D showings.

I don't think that Thor number is bad, pretty good actually.

Iron Man made 6M May 1-4 back in 08.

Thor made 1.5M on it's 1st day (Thursday), so it should do well on the weekend.

While I don't think Thor will ever catch up to Fast Five, I do agree that it is missing out on 2D tickets.

I assume, Australia, like the US has tired of 3D? Plus, my friends tell me that 2D tickets are already expensive so the added premium would just deter more people.

2D tickets are already expensive, the issue is every Theater has one 2D showing for the whole day and the rest are 3D. It means alot of people might choose not to go at all. Hmm I think we have tired on 3D but not as much as the US.

Fast and Furious franchise is huge in Aus, Thor was never going to be a match for it.

The number for Thor is good...it's just that FF franchise has gotten bigger over the years in Australia

This is tracking just about where THE DARK KNIGHT was after 2-Days of play. TDK also opened on a Wednesday and had a total of around $4.5m AU vs. Fast Five's $4.3m.

TDK went on to gross $11.8m 4-Day or $14m over the 5-Day. So with the Easter break, expect at least the same even though i woulder consider Fast Five more frontloaded (F5's Day 2 of $1.95m AU was lower than TDK's $2.2m). TDK's opening is currently #17 All-Time over 4-Days, while it's 5-Days opening Wed-Sun is beatean only by HP6 ($18.7m), HP5 ($17m), Transformers 2 ($16.3m). So we're talking about pretty mammoth figures here for Fast Five.

Either way, expect at least $10m 4-Day.

Well we called this weeks back, Thor would never have a chance against Fast 5. The franchise is huge in Oz. Im going in a big group to see it next week. Thor on the other hand, despite having an Australian lead was always facing an uphill battle. So its not that bad for Thor actually.

Dont forget this is a FIVE day long weekend here and last week was school holidays.

Actually the more I think of the Thor number, the better it looks.

FF grossed 2.1 mill in PREVIEWS in the UK. That's Universal's biggest preview ever in the UK and eighth biggest preview of all time.

Total overseas right now is more than 7 mill.

While both FF4 and FF5 had the same release date...were they also sharing the same 5-day holiday that FF5 had?
