Tonight's ceremony was so strangely produced. Randomly paying tribute to classic movies, the use of Franco & Hathaway, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"...very disjointed.

In twenty years, lets see if anybody remembers King Speech over Social Network, Inception, or Toy Story 3. I hate it that the academy pick these movies that come out in the last few weeks of the year. I also just don't see the King's Speech being a lasting memorable film. Its is like people remember Star wars over Annie Hall, ET over Gandhi, or Saving Private Ryan over Shakespeare in Love.

I will say Franco and Hathaway should never host an Oscar show again. They were horrible. When Billy Crystal and Kirk Douglas were funnier that said a lot. I hoped for Crystal to take over when he came out there.

Hathaway flubbed one line but was otherwise fine, and pretty funny a few times. Franco and the writing really brought the thing down. He looked like and sounded like he didn't want to be there.

 Re: Oscar Chat Live!
Definitely the worst Oscars that I can recall watching. Kirk Douglas was the highlight of the evening imo.
It was a very poorly produced and all over the place show.

I never said you did. That was just me talking. And I've come around to Crash again . I wouldn't say I "hate" it now, just that it didn't deserve to win Best Picture at all. I thought the opening of the ceremony was good, but the rest was kind of a mess and it was just too safe. But people seem to like safe, which is why Ricky Gervais was banned from the Globes.

 Re: Oscar Chat Live!
Strange comparison, but this Oscars kinda felt like Paul McCartney at the Superbowl the year after Janet Jackson played the half time show. After Ricky Gervais, it was almost as if they went overboard on making the show safe...

Look at the AFI list Star Wars is above it. That is the problem with the Oscars sometimes, it becomes a popularity contest and the voters don't think about what movie will be longer lasting.

 Re: Oscar Chat Live!
Sorry but IMO I found the King's Speech better than the Social Network and I'm glad that it got the BP. It's not about what film is remembered its what film is better and I just thought King Speech was better than all the Best Picture Nominees.

Annie Hall is certainly not a forgotten film. Of course it'll never have an audience as big as Star Wars, but Annie Hall remains one of cinema's most beloved romantic comedies. And it is Woody Allen's most famous film (though I prefer Manhattan and maybe Match Point).

 Re: Oscar Chat Live!
Also, I'm not convinced The Social Network is going to go down as a timeless film... Well-regarded, sure, but I don't buy into this whole, 'In 30 years, you'll be able to say to your grandchildren you saw -The Social Network- on the big screen, and they will be jealous' angle. This isn't 2001. This isn't The Silence of the Lambs. It's not even David Fincher's best film (hello, nomination-free Zodiac).
A lot of pasty Internet types have rushed to declare The Social Network a landmark filmmaking achievement.

 Re: Oscar Chat Live!
Some thoughts:
-James Franco and Anne Hathaway were a bust, as expected. Actually, major kudos to Hathaway for doing each joke with a charming gusto. Maybe she should've been given sole hosting duties. I would've preferred an eyeroll-inducing music number over the strained banter between her and an obviously bored (or high) Franco. Actually, I'd take a re-animated Bob Hope over a repeat performance from Franco and Hathaway.
-Kirk Douglas reminded everyone he's not dead. Oh, come on... it's not like you weren't thinking the same thing. Then he schooled the young'uns by playing the "I'm old and senile" card for laughs.
-Christian Bale was the most-deserving acting winner last night. Portman was great, but I saw Natalie Portman playing a ballerina in Black Swan. In The Fighter, Bale was a crack addicted former boxer. I forgot he was Batman!
-Inception deserved more than four Oscars, but that'll do.
-The overall show was terrible. Thanks, Ricky Gervais. Now you've ruined the Oscars! Anyone who thinks he wouldn't have made the show a thousand times better is just silly. If Hollywood ever needed more of a slap in the face, it was last night.
-The King's Speech winning Best Pic is easy to explain. All along, the Academy was prepared to give the award to the "hip interwebs movie" to appease a newer audience. But then, out of nowhere, audiences started embracing The King's Speech, and The Academy, never in dire need of an excuse to give the award to a stuffy film about a stuttering King, jumped to give accolades to Speech. I loved both films and am happy at the end result, but TKS is entirely Oscar.
