Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 5/29-30 - Alice to make it 7?
I didn't get to do a Weekend Analysis this week, but here are some updated figures (as of May 23rd) and some thoughts:

Alice in Wonderland - Y10,104,583,400 ($112.3m), 37 days in release
Trick the Movie 3 - Y1,211,316,330 ($13.4m), 16 days in release
Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky - Y2,996,415,750 ($33.3m), 37 days in release
Nodame Cantabile the Movie II - Y3,328,339,870 ($37m), 37 days in release

Alice in Wonderland is almost Y2b (about $21m) ahead of Avatar after 6 weeks in release, but the sixth week/weekend gross has fallen behind Avatar's by a significant amount ($15m vs $11m sixth week grosses). Alice in Wonderland will likely be around $120m after this weekend, which would be about $13m ahead of Avatar. So Alice is eventually going to lose it's lead over Avatar, but their final totals will be very close.

Right now I give the edge to Avatar due to it's later weeks where it had no competition, and Alice will soon be facing a great deal in the coming weeks.

Trick the Movie 3 is slightly ahead of it's predecessor, and should finish above it with a total in the mid-20's.

Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky continues to mostly mirror last year's The Raven Chaser. It's about $.5 behind at the moment, but the sixth week is slightly better, so it's just too close to really say if it'll surpass The Raven Chaser (Y3.5b/$38.7m) which is the highest grossing film in the franchise.

Nodame Cantabile the Movie II looks to be a victim of the exchange rate. It remained flat during it's sixth week in USD. It should beat the original's Y4.0b total, but the total in USD appears to be difficult if this continues.

I'm pretty convinced now that Harry Potter and the Deatly Hallows will pass $120 million this year in Japan and the final film might actually get to $150 million as well.

If it's gross ends up being 80% or more in 3D like Alice (only $20m of it's total is from 2D), it's definitely possible

Live-Action Hollywood 3D films are certainly helping the Hollywood share at the box office this year, though they'll need to release more of them because the only ones so far this year (Calendar Year) worth mentioning are Shutter Island, Sherlock Holmes, and Alice in Wonderland. Everything else has grossed less than $20m (Shutter Island is close enough and has a chance to crawl there). And Prince of Persia is looking at a poor debut, so $20m is probably out of the question for it, too. Without Alice (though Avatar will count as a 2010 release), it's a very dismal showing this first half of 2010 for Hollywood. Last year at least had Angels and Demons and Terminator clear $30m, Mamma Mia! and Benjamin Button pass $25m released before June.

The Summer has Toy Story 3 and Inception for Hollywood, though their release dates are pretty bad. Both (especially TS3) are being released in the middle of severe competition this July.

July 3 - Bayside Shakedown 3
July 10 - Toy Story 3 3D, Pokemon 13
July 17 - The Borrower Arrietty (Studio Ghibli), Surely Someday, The Last Airbender 3D
July 23 - Inception
July 31 - Salt (Jolie would be the female equivalent of Depp in Japan, her films always do well in the market), Hutch, the Honeybee the Movie

Something should have moved to December. Pixar has done well there the past few years, they should have stuck with it.

So it looks like Harry Potter will need that 80% 3D gross that Alice is receiving to help counter all this since the attendance keeps declining each year for Potter and friends.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 5/29-30 - Prince doesn't excite
Toho continues it's dominance of the market, once again seeing significant growth setting a new record for April and the first four months of the year:

Toho's April revenue was Y5,664,397,980 (or about $62m), and total earnings for Jan., Feb., March, and April totaling Y20,918,898,240 (or about $230m).

Top grossing Toho films so far (or expected finishes):

1. Nodame Cantabile the Movie II - Y4b or more expected, so $45-50m.
2. Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky - about Y3.2b expected, or $35/36m.
3. Doraemon: Nobita's South Sea Adventure - also about Y3.2b, or $35/36m expected.

With Bayside Shakedown 3, new Studio Ghibli, new Pokemon, and Umizaru 3 ($350-400m can come from them alone) all in the next 4 months, Toho is probably going to aim for $1b for the year.

Toho 2008 - Y65.5b ($724.3m)
Toho 2009 - Y73.91b ($820.8m), 38% of the entire market.

Also, the poll has ended. The two areas I'll begin posting theater listing next month will be Shibuya, Tokyo, and Osaka.

Zatoichi the Last - 69,184 admissions on 238 screens

A few more numbers are in:

No official number for Alice in Wonderland, but Y11,000,000,000 is expected to be crossed soon. My guess is that Alice is around 10.7/10.8 (or about $118m). Avatar's final total was 15.3b (or $167m).

Prince of Persia - 154,354 admissions on 364 screens for Y188m (or about $2.1m) over three days.

That's pretty poor for Prince of Persia. It didn't get near as many screens as one would expect (I say because Disney kept Alice on them), and just breaking 150,000 admissions for a $2m long weekend is bad. Y1b ($11m) is going to be almost impossible.

Trick the Movie 3 in it's fourth week gained 100,249 admissions, for Y134,784,550 (or about $1.5m).

Railways 49 - 78,367 admissions on 201 screens, for Y90,714,700 (or about $1m).

Zatoichi the Last - 69,184 admissions on 238 screens, for Y85,128,400 (or about $.9m)

DVD

Quote:
Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro film has sold 1.001 million DVD copies in Japan as of the May 24-30 week — 440 weeks after its first release. The 1988 film first shipped in Japan on September 28, 2001. It has remained in the top 300 of Oricon's weekly DVD ranking charts ever since. By contrast, the 2-Disc Special Edition of Gore Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has also sold one million copies in Japan, but has only ranked on the weekly charts 26 times.

Despite this record, Totoro is only the #3 top-selling Ghibli film on DVD in Japan to date. Spirited Away has sold an estimated 2.344 million copies on DVD since 2002, and Howl's Moving Castle has sold an estimated 1.216 million copies on DVD since 2005.

Quote:
The Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha) film has topped Oricon's weekly sales ranking charts in both the DVD and Blu-ray Disc categories in Japan during the May 24-30 week. In one week, Evangelion: 2.22's 357,000 Blu-ray sales have already topped all the Blu-ray copies of Michael Jackson's This Is It that have been sold in Japan so far (351,000 copies). Evangelion: 2.22's is also now the top-selling Blu-ray in Japan since Oricon began keeping records in this category in July of 2008. (James Cameron's Avatar film sold 198,000 copies on Blu-ray in Japan since April.)

Evangelion: 2.22 also sold 283,029 DVDs as the top DVD of the May 24-30 week. It topped Ponyo's 200,000-copy record for first-week sales for an anime DVD release. All told, Evangelion: 2.22 earned 2.21 billion yen (about US$24 million) on Blu-ray and 1.72 billion yen (US$19 million) on DVD for a grand total of 3.93 billion yen (US$43 million) in its first week of sales.

10. Detective Conan The Lost Ship in the Sky Toho $443,825 7 326 $1,361 -49 $33,844,417

Still strong for Alice in Wonderland. Still nothing indicating a finish below $140m, with $150m still looking likely. It's tracking about $11m ahead of Avatar, but the week number is about half of Avatar's 7th week. Week 9 is where the totals of the two will be about the same.

Poor debut for Prince of Persia. For a Hollywood tentpole, it really lacked the screens (probably due to Alice in Wonderland), but even still, it's a very disappointing start. $10m is probably out of reach for it.

Trick the Movie 3 is still going strong. It's about $4m away from surpassing the previous installment. Mid-20's is still looking like a very solid finish.

Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider saw it's usual second weekend drop. Episode Blue will be released this coming weekend, followed by Episode Yellow in two weeks.

Decent openings for both Railways and Zatoichi.

In other news, The Cove has been cancelled for release in select theaters in Shibuya, Tokyo. The release date is June 26.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 6/5-6 - Weekend Forecast
Alice in Wonderland has slowed down greatly over the past two weeks, especially this past weekend. It's total after 8 weeks is Y11.1b (or about $121m). Meaning it only added just over $3m for the week. This is going to rule out $150m, with $140m looking to be quite difficult now.

USD

Spoiler: show
1. Spirited Away - $234m
2. Titanic - $201.4m
3. Howl's Moving Castle - $190m
4. Ponyo on a Cliff - $172.2m
5. Princess Mononoke - $165.5m
6. Bayside Shakedown 2 - $164.5m
7. Avatar - $160-167m (different reports)
8. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - $152.9m
9. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - $142.8m
10. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - $121.6m
11. Alice in Wonderland - $121.1m
12. The Last Samurai - $119.3m
13. Jurassic Park - $116m
14. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace - $109.9m
15. Finding Nemo - $102.4m
16. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - $102.1m
17. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - $100.2m
18. Rookies: The Movie - $94.5m
19. Mission: Impossible 2 - $94.1m
20. Independence Day - $92.7m

Yen

Spoiler: show
1 Spirited Away ¥30.4b
2 Titanic ¥25.9b
3 Howl's Moving Castle ¥22b
4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ¥20.3b
5 Princess Mononoke ¥19.3b
6 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ¥18b
7 Bayside Shakedown 2 ¥17.35b
8 Ponyo on a Cliff ¥15.5b
9 Avatar - ¥15.1/15.3b (different reports)
10 The Last Samurai ¥13.7b
11 Armageddon ¥13.5b
12 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ¥13.5b
13 Jurassic Park ¥12.9b
14 Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace ¥12.7b
15 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ¥11.5 b
16 Independence Day ¥11.3b
17 Alice in Wonderland - ¥11.1b
18 Nankyoku Monogatari ¥11.0b
19 Matrix Reloaded ¥11.0b
20 Finding Nemo ¥11.0b

It looks like Alice will have to settle for 10th Biggest in USD, and 15th Biggest in Yen. Still absolutely amazing, of course. It is the only non-Summer or Holiday release on the charts, which is very impressive.

Confessions has been receiving rave reviews for weeks now, and buzz was quite high, but it wasn't expected to open at No.1 this weekend. A very solid overperformance, and legs should be excellent.

Kamen Rider Den O Trilogy Episode Blue opens to nearly an identical amount as Episode Red from a few weeks ago. Episode Yellow will be released on June 19th.

Sex and the City 2 opens to just about the same as the original. $2.1m 2day ($3m 3day) vs $2.6m 2day of the original, so yeah, roughly the same.

Alice in Wonderland took a bit of a hit this week, but not too bad of a hold. $140m is still possible, but it'll begin to lose theaters soon given it's lost so few over the past 8 weeks.

Prince of Persia at least managed to double it's opening after the first week, so that's a good sign. $10m still looks impossible, but eh, the week 2 drop could have been worse.

TOKYO – Special mini-episodes of “Odoru Daisosasen” (“Bayside Shakedown”) are being released for mobile phones to promote the third installment of the mega-hit franchise that bows on July 3.

The 12 episodes comprise a 73-minute story linked to the film, and are being released every Tuesday and Friday this month. They will be available on the NTT DoCoMo network, Japan’s largest with around 50 million subscribers.

The episodes will feature Yuji Oda, star of the movies and the Fuji TV series that preceded them.

“Bayside Shakedown 3” will once again be directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro (“Shaolin Girl”), who has helmed the rest of the movies and spin-off TV specials.

2003’s “Bayside Shakedown 2” remains Japan’s biggest-grossing domestic live-action movie with 17.35 billion yen ($190.5 million) [with the current exchange rate].

Iron Man did very poorly. It opened to about $2m, and failed to reach $10m total.

As for the sequel, I actually read a few weeks ago that pre-sales were decent, but online signs aren't strong. It might be able to beat the original, but it probably won't be by much. I'll know more tomorrow.

June in general isn't looking to be too strong, though. This Is It will be re-released (for the second time, the first being last Christmas/New Year) on 220 screens (very large for a re-release) on the 19th and should open well again with the one week only release in preparation for the new King of Pop film that will be rolled out on the 25th.

But besides that, it's just the calm before Bayside Shakedown 3 is released on July 3rd. Toho is marketing it very aggressively, perhaps their biggest push to date. They reached a deal with NTT DoCoMo network, the largest cell phone provider with 50 million users (about 40% of Japan's population), to send out mini-episodes of the series that link to the third movie every Tuesday and Friday for the entire month of June.

One Piece #58 only had 3 days included in the weekly sales because it was released on June 4th. The figure though puts the series' copies sold near 17m for 2010, and overall copies sold ever closer to 200m. 200m copies sold should be achieved with Volume 59, which would make One Piece the first Manga to ever sell over 200m copies when it happens.
