^ About Ip Man 2: Are they fighting Japanese guys this time around? Looks like Ip Man 2 will win the weekend. And no, this time, Ip Man goes up against the British.

I never expected that Ip Man would catch up this fast. Its Saturday-to-Sunday drop is only -1.2%. From my calculations: Ip Man 2 - $1,885,000 US (est.) - 4 day total Iron Man 2 - $1,705,000 US (est.) - 3 day total These may be entirely off but it looks certain that with Ip Man 2's strong Sunday, Iron Man 2 will not be able to catch Ip Man 2 and win the weekend.

Re: HK Weekend: IRON MAN 2 Leads, But IP MAN 2 Edges Closer
It depends on how you define "weekend". If you look at 4 day (Thu-Sun), Ip Man 2 wins easily. If you look at 3 day (Fri-Sun), Iron Man 2 takes the lead, though the lead keeps shrinking as the weekend proceeds. If the trend continues, Ip Man 2 will win the overall battle.

True, although I think people will end up playing the what-if scenario. If Iron Man 2 was released on Thurs. instead of Fri., it would have won the weekend. If Ip Man 2 was released on Fri. instead of Thurs., it would have lost the weekend... I think Ip Man 2 should still be declared the winner of the weekend. Traditionally, it's the 4 day that always defines who the winner is. Maybe this time though, there could be an asterisk saying that Iron Man won the 3 day? In any case, Iron Man 2 should see a better hold than Ip Man 2 next weekend unless if it falls at an astronomical rate.

That's not 100% certain. I think it would be a tight race for 4-day between the two if Iron Man 2 were released Thursday. I begin to think Ip Man 2's losing 3-day to Iron Man 2 was because Thursday deflated its Fri-Sun gross. P.S. I am still waiting for weekend actuals to come out. Bluebomb, since you have seen the movie, how "Sino-centric" do you think IP MAN 2 is? How did it compare to Jet Li's Wong Fei Hung?

Bluebomb, since you have seen the movie, how "Sino-centric" do you think IP MAN 2 is? How did it compare to Jet Li's Wong Fei Hung? I'm going to disagree here. The Thursday gross for Ip Man 2 was hugely inflated by the fact that almost every theater gave it multiple (sometimes 4 or 5) screens. People knew that Iron Man 2 was going to be big and used the Wednesday night/Thursday screenings to see it before they thought it was too late. When the schedule for Friday came out, most theaters cut down on their Ip Man 2 screens or moved the movie to smaller theaters. Even though Iron Man 2 is looking like it is frontloaded, the extra business generated from Thursday and the bigger screens would have put it over the top. Iron Man 2 right now is still in the biggest theaters everywhere. Would Ip Man 2 have gotten more or bigger screens had both been released on Thursday? Maybe, maybe not, but I don't think so. The one thing that I'm surprised is how well Ip Man 2 was able to hold its own this weekend. I thought it was going to get clobbered with the screen loss but it looks like it was playing to full capacity while Iron Man was only playing to about 75-80%. Ip Man 2 was very Sino-centric. I can't really compare between Wong Fei Hung and this movie because both are very Sino-centric in my opinion. Oh, forgot to mention this. Iron Man 2 IMAX 85-90% full - around 350+ seats I think people liked it. I preferred the first one but this is a good sequel. 8/10

Re: HK Wknd: IRON MAN 2 Wins 3-Day While IP MAN 2 Wins 4-Day
Monday's admissions (May 3):
1. Ip Man 2 - 28,965 2. Iron Man 2 - 18,161 3. Toy Story 2 (3D Cantonese) - 920 4. The Ghost Writer - 860 5. Toy Story (3D Cantonese) - 566
Sunday-to-Monday drops:
Ip Man 2: -60.6% Iron Man 2: -76.3%
Incredible drop for Ip Man 2. I wonder if it will drop less than -30% this weekend. Maybe not with its inflated Thursday gross. As for Iron Man 2, with that number it's looking like a less than 50% drop (incl. Thursday gross).

Opening Thursday:
Dear John - Wide The Crazies - Wide Mother And Child - Limited Let the Right One In - Limited Remember Me - Limited
Wednesday Early Updates:
IP MAN 2 is outselling IRON MAN 2 two to one Wednesday. True, Wednesday being a school day can be a disadvantage to IRON MANS whose demo is younger. That said, there is little doubt IP MAN 2 has better legs and will win the ultimate battle.

Ip Man decreased and Iron Man increased from Variety's numbers. Still, Ip Man 2 won the weekend albeit with an asterisk (it was released on Thursday while Iron Man 2 was released on Friday). Those are some sparkling PSA's for Ip Man 2 and Iron Man 2. Toy Story 2 opened to very good results considering the competition. It definitely shows that there's a market for this movie and it bodes well for the third movie coming out in July. The rest, however, dropped significantly due to lost showtimes given to the openers. No other analysis needed here. This makes it the shortest weekend report that will likely be written.

Hopefully, Prince of Persia will flop allowing Nodame to win the weekend.

5 | Mother And Child | -- | 1594 | -- |
Excellent drop for Ip Man 2. Awful drop for Iron Man 2. It should be able to make it past its predecessor's total but just barely unless if it takes another tumble next weekend. The rest all saw modest increases from Thursday's admissions.
| Saturday adm. | (so far) | | May 8 |

Still a good drop for Ip Man 2. Terrible drop for Iron Man 2, however. Both will stabilize and will drop less due to less upfront demand. It'll be interesting to see who wins out between Dear John and The Crazies. It has been close the last 2 days with only 500 admissions difference between the two of them on Friday...although Dear John is gaining on The Crazies. It is possibly a sign that The Crazies is a bit frontloaded.

10 | 8 | Love in a Puff | Hong Kong | 7 | HK$8,501 | -69% | HK$6,279,052 |
This is poised to be a slow weekend as none of the new releases make much of a splash. Swedish horror Let the Right One In posted a decent gross for a foreign language release. Mother And Child should see a surge Sunday because of Mothers' Day. It is good to see holdovers Kick-Ass and Love in a Puff, both rated III, ended up being hits. A winner has emerged from the battle of the " MAN"'s. IP MAN 2 now is comfortably ahead of IRON MAN 2 in both dailies and totals. So far this year, we saw Hong Kong productions 72 Tenants, Echoes of the Rainbow, and IP MAN 2 stand tall against Hollywood releases. Can we take this as a sign of revival of interest in local productions? Next week, we have Hong Kong B-Horror movie Dream Home (aka Victoria I; directed by Peng Ho-Cheung) going head-to-head against Hollywood epic Robin Hood. It should be an interesting race to look at. I look forward to DREAM HOME and I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS (I don't think it has been released in the States yet). I hope both will go out as wide releases. Bluebomb wrote: I really hope that Nodame Cantabile wins the May 27 weekend. Hopefully, Prince of Persia will flop allowing Nodame to win the weekend. The first one did just over $4,000,000 in March. The tv series has a loyal fan base. So we are looking at a gross similar to the first one. But I don't think it will break out as its appeal is limited to those who have seen the tv series.

Let The Right One In didn't make as much as The White Ribbon did on its Thursday but it could end up surpassing it on the weekend. It's pretty much aiming for that number anyway. The only reason 72 Tenants did so well was because of Chinese New Year. As for the other two, as long as they keep making good movies like those, people will watch it. If by interesting you mean Robin Hood will beat the crap out of Dream Home then I agree. Heh. Unless if there's something that I am missing about Dream Home...

Great hold for Ip Man 2. I was not expecting it to drop just 12%. Not much more I can say about Ip Man 2. Just terrific. The other story is the big collapse of Iron Man 2. I knew it would be frontloaded but this? Something is wrong here. The movie is good, although not up to the standard set by the first movie so WOM shouldn't be this bad. It does have competition, but all it means is that instead of it being shown on 4 or 5 screens, it's showing on 3 or 4 screens. I am not ready to declare an Iron Man 2: What Went Wrong in HK post just yet. Hopefully it will stabilize soon. The battle between Dear John and The Crazies just got even more interesting. The gap closed to just over 300 admissions and with Sunday's pre-sales update...

The Crazies has overtaken Dear John for 3rd place! It may come down to a single admission as to who wins Sunday...maybe even the weekend if The Crazies can pull away from Dear John. Ip Man 2 just keeps chugging along. It will have a larger drop when finals come in due to some theaters allocating the bigger screens to it last Sunday. Iron Man 2 should see a better drop today with the loss of those screens from last Sunday. Mother and Child had a nice boost. Maybe it will increase from Saturday's intake? i.hope wrote: I look forward to DREAM HOME and I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS (I don't think it has been released in the States yet). I have no idea what Phillip Morris is about. I have to check it out. As for Nodame, all I ask is that it beats Prince of Persia opening weekend, total and beats its predecessor's total. Wait, is that too much to ask?

Re: HK Sophomore Weekend: IP MAN 2 Leads, IRON MAN 2 Bleeds
Bluebomb wrote: If by interesting you mean Robin Hood will beat the crap out of Dream Home then I agree. Heh. Unless if there's something that I am missing about Dream Home... It will be closer than you think between the two. Robin Hood is the weakest of the bunch of Hollywood summer movies. And it is a period piece, a genre that does not have broad appeal in Hong Kong (Look at Kingdom of Heaven, Alexander, and King Arthur).
Dream Home has a strong premise: a loser-type OL (short for office lady) who struggles to buy a house amid the subprime mortgage crisis decides to go on a killing spree to bring down the price. It is so bizarre yet so relevant to today's situation. It is directed by Peng Ho-Cheung, director of Love in a Puff.
Let me quote a review from MTV IGGY (http://blog.mtviggy.com/2010/04/28/movi ... of-horror/):Quote: Movie Review: Dream Home, The Hong Kong House of Horror
BY: Adriane
A Slasher Flick for the Thinking Man: The Sub-prime Mortgage Crisis Meets Campy Hong Kong Horror
It was when Pang Ho-Cheung and his friends were sitting around one day, kvetching about what it would take to be able to buy an apartment, that they came up with the concept of the young director’s next film. To snag a flat in a city where real estate prices have sky-rocketed, they wondered, “Would you have to kill someone?”
That’s the brilliant premise of Dream Home, a horror film for the thinking man that’s both a suspenseful thriller about a murder spree in a Hong Kong high-rise and a satire of one of the world’s most expensive cities, whose 1997 hand-over saw real estate prices rise a whopping 15%. Cleverly cutting between grisly old-school, Guignol horror and a back story of real estate despair that has led our killer here, this is perhaps the only slasher flick ever filmed wherein the sub-prime mortgage crisis is a major plot point.
Pang Ho-Cheung, one of Hong Kong’s hottest young directors, has made a name for himself pegging genre flicks to the turmoil of the city. In the wake of the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s, his debut You Shoot, I Shoot followed a contract killer who, facing a decline in demand due to the economy, turns to marketing — teaming up with a film-maker who captures his hits on video. His most recent film, Love in a Puff, was a romantic comedy about lovers who meet up as a result of the city’s new anti-smoking laws. As in those films, Dream Home is a satire of a wicked city. But oh, for you horror fans — there’s plenty.
Heroine Cheng Lai-sheung will do anything to get an apartment in the world's most expensive city. Photo Credit: 852 Films
Our heroine Cheng Lai-sheung (Josie Ho) is a smart, hard-working employee of a bank, where it’s her job to push card-holders into debt. She feels morally queasy about what she’s doing, but she’s got too little time to think about it — she’s bent on buying her dream home, an apartment on Victoria Bay on sale for $4.9 million. Growing up across the street in Tsim Tsa Tsui, she knew No. 1 Victoria Street as where her friend Jimmy lived. But when the government, in alliance with Triad members and business tycoons (we’re looking at you, Stanley Ho!), condemned the house — forcing its residents out, she watched the violence, destruction, and the construction of a glimmering new high rise. In Hong Kong — and elsewhere in China — young people don’t prove their mettle until they’re able to buy their own apartment.
Her father, a builder, has worked for decades constructing such mega-rises but has never earned enough to buy a nice flat of his own. Now, despite the fact Cheng works two jobs, gets life-insurance from a family member’s death, and the bank is willing to lend her 70% (this is so pre-recession), the home-owners of her dream home are seeing the market rise. It’s 2007 and the bubble hasn’t burst. When they tell her they’re going to try for more, Lai-Sheung turns quickly from devastation to planning…
So what does our heroine do? We watch her in the apartment’s gleaming hallways, walking obsidian floors beneath twinkling chandeliers as she stalks her prey — the building’s other residents. Her goal slowly becomes clear to us — she’s not here to kill those who occupy the apartment she wants, she’s here to kill all their surrounding neighbors, thereby lowering property value.
Like all good horror directors, Ho-Cheung isn’t afraid to have us sympathize both with our heroine — the woman who is poor, despite having worked a life-time — and her victims. One of the first killed is a pregnant woman, whose unborn baby literally drips out. (Eeeeeeeeeeeeew!) But horror sequences aren’t just grizzly, they’re clever; Lai-sheung kills all her victims with the household items she finds in these rooms she’s lusted after. A kid smoking pot is killed by shoving a bong into his throat (its glass bulb slowly fills with the blood flowing in); a wealthy woman is killed by shoving her head into the very vacuum bag her Filipino maid had been using to more efficiently store her clothes. (Brilliant!) Significantly, Cheng performs much of this violence with her father’s tool belt — which she wears clipped around her waist. While the tools would never serve him to get an apartment, they will serve her.
But this is far from the serious, symbolic satire of revenge. There’s a real sense of humor. Ho-Cheung has said he was inspired by the cultish comedy of Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Kreuger, and one can see it when the drugged-out kid she disembowels tries, slumped over, to smoke a last jay; “Sh*t,” he says. “It’s gone out.” Then, when (spoiler!) she moves into the apartment, the radio’s playing. It seems that, overnight, the stock market crashed. Property’s tumbling. It’s the sub-prime mortgage crisis…
At the screening, Ho-Cheung was on hand to answer questions. When asked what inspired him, he admitted, “Up to this point, I still haven’t been able to buy a flat in Hong Kong.”
And he’s a hit film director.
Dream Home
Directed by Pang Ho-Cheung Starring: Josie Ho, Eason Chan, Michelle Ye Language Cantonese with some Mandarin (with English subtitles), (Hong Kong), 2010, 96 minutes.

Over the course of this weekend, Ip Man has proven to be very consistent. These drops are in line with the screens it got last weekend. Iron Man has gone from bad to worse. It had an even bigger drop than it got on Saturday. Dear John just sneaked by The Crazies. Very interesting battle for 3rd place here. Mother And Child ended up decreasing in admissions from Saturday. It's possible that all films saw slight fluctuations in their percentages. Next Sunday could see slightly better drops for all films.

Thursday deflated Ip Man 2's hold. To drop only 20% in week 2 facing competition from a blockbuster movie and an inflated opening day is exceptional. Troubling hold for Iron Man 2. I had expected that with an additional day this week, it would have dropped under 50%. To drop 60% in the second weekend means that all the people that wanted to see this movie saw it opening weekend. I really thought the battle between the 2 was going to last much longer. After hyping last weekend for a good month, Iron Man 2 is looking like it is going out with a whimper while Ip Man 2 is performing to my expectations -- great legs (although I did not expect such a huge opening for Ip Man).

Nope. It actually has good WOM...not overly enthusiastic WOM but enough for people to recommend to their friends. The general consensus that I get here is that it's good but not great.

Weekend of May 6-9, 2010: 1. Ip Man 2 Mandarin $1,247,231 2 40 $31,181 -22 $3,673,146 2. Iron Man 2 Paramount Int'l $804,583 2 44 $18,286 -48 $2,901,076 3. Dear John Golden Scene $106,800 1 19 $5,621 0 $119,693 4. Crazies, The Intercontinental $97,566 1 18 $5,420 0 $110,805 5. Mother And Child Sundream $25,200 1 6 $4,200 0 $27,985 6. Toy Story 2 (3D) Walt Disney Int'l $24,365 2 12 $2,030 -85 $232,341 7. Ghost Writer, The Deltamac $19,076 3 10 $1,908 -26 $184,440 8. Kick Ass Lark Films $18,320 4 9 $2,036 -66 $661,634 9. Let The Right One In Edko $11,249 1 2 $5,625 0 $13,324 10. Love in a Puff Gala Films $6,979 7 5 $1,396 -49 $815,676 Great hold for Ip Man 2. Very nice PSA. It could be heading for a total of $6-7m US. Iron Man 2 didn't have a great hold as it just fell under 50%. With almost zero competition, it pretty much is fading against Ip Man 2. The weekend hold was inflated due to Thursday's gross added into this weekend's total. Without it, it would have fallen closer to 60%. The two new wide releases Dear John and The Crazies didn't spark much interest as they opened in the $5,000 PSA range. The distributor of Mother And Child thought they would be able to use Mother's Day to boost its opening weekend. Well, they were wrong as Sunday fell from Saturday's admissions and played like a typical release. Toy Story 2 took a nosedive as Thursday and Friday shows were almost nonexistent. The Ghost Writer held great. It should be able to crack $200,000 US. Not bad for an indie movie. Kick-Ass tumbled another 66%. Its total will end up being very profitable for Lark and the other distributors. Let The Right One In bests The White Ribbon's opening weekend and managed to crack $10,000 US. Love In A Puff had a solid hold and has turned out to be a success after its disappointing opening weekend. Right now it is sitting at a 6.27 multiplier.

Ip Man 2 dropped bigger than usual due to screen allocations. It will definitely have better holds by the weekend as Robin Hood and Dream Home are both underperforming.

I'd say Dream Home performs as expected. It is an okay start for a local horror movie. Any words about its word of mouth? can it be another Love in a Puff?

Any words about its word of mouth? can it be another Love in a Puff? What I mean is that Dream Home has been underperforming given the size of the screens it has. It has been getting the largest screens in some places and has been underwhelming. Theater owners are frantically trying to correct their big mistake by putting Ip Man 2 back on the largest screens on Saturday (either from Robin Hood underperforming or Dream Home doing so or even both). That was what I meant when I said Ip Man 2 will have better drops as the weekend progresses. I'm not sure about the word of mouth yet for Dream Home as it's too early to tell.
