The first one did $267m overseas, I expect IM2 to do much better (even though with the Euro weakening, the overall gross will be hurt a little bit).

Today IM2 opens in France, expect Paris first showings numbers in about 4 hours and Paris opening day numbers in about 10 hours...

In addition IM2 opens almost everywhere this weekend, biggest markets to open later are Germany & Japan (& domestic of course).

My guess for worldwide b.o.: at least $750m, at the most $850m

Yeah, $800m is certainly attainable.

What a chance to have Iron Man 2 in first in France :D

Comparisons and analysis on my website...

Iron Man 2 : 5 715
The Dark Knight : 4 877
Iron Man 1 : 4 469
Wolverine : 3 433
Incroyable Hulk : 1 824
Kick-Ass : 1 633

http://lestoilesheroiques.blogspot.com/2010/04/iron-man-2-le-box-office.html

My pronostic : 250 / 300 000 tickets, so 270 000. But the euro is very weak (weakiest since one year :( ) so...

$800+ million worldwide will happen, I have very little doubt about that. Unlike Transformers, Iron Man actually had to become more known to audiences overseas and the DVD run was very good too almost everywhere as far as I know. Something like $850 million looks right.

The France opening is nothing special, if not slightly poor.

Nah I don't expect this to do all that big overseas. I expect around 290-330 million overseas. This movie just like the original won't be all that big in europe. Also, it will bomb in Japan because the first one grossed only 10 million, so sequel is likely going to do less.

But a movie like this is bound to increase.

Iron Man made $267 million OS. No way Iron Man 2 is making only $290 million then...

Post Re: Iron Man 2 (INTL)
Iron Man 2 opened in Australia yesterday (Thu) and while i haven't seen any opening day grosses here yet, i've just checked some of the Friday evening sessions and most are close to SOLD OUT. Albeit i don't think this is showing in as many theatres as some of the massive blockbusters in the pass. Most big cinemas here across Melbourne has Iron Man 2 on about 8-10 sessions per day.....i've seen movies like Alice in Wonderland and Avatar chewing up more than 13-15 sessions per day in th big cinemas here. Since it's not on 3D, i think movies are still reserving some of the medium to large size cinemas for Alice and Titans.

The original opened to AUD$6.2m, which is a blockbuster opening but nowhere near the Top 20 now, which you now need AUD$10.4m to enter (the gates are currently held by Alice in Wonderland actually at AUD$10.377m).

Last year's Transformers 2 grossed a whopping AUD$13.6m over the regular 4-Day frame and a humungous AUD$16.3m for the 5-Day (incl. Wednesday)...which to this day is still #4 on the all-time opening charts. I don't think Iron Man 2 can gross close to this, but it looks assured of at least $8m with a total close to $10m for the 4-Day a possibility. If this was in 3D, it would've easily blown past $10m and may threaten the Top 10 largest openings which stands at $12.4m to enter.

RTH said something in the realm of AU$1.8m. I guess it'll end up AU$8m-9m with that.

The original had an opening day of AU$1.058m, so this represents an 80% increase, which if it follows the same multiplier as the original would be good for AU$11m. While we can say it may be frontloaded because it's a sequel, AU$10m is still a possibility.

A good comparison is Spiderman 3 which also opened to $1.805m and ended up with $9.5m for the weekend. Same for Indiana Jones which grossed $1.9m opening and ended up with $9.7m.

At the momment anything between $8.5m-$10.5m looks likely.

I think $9-$10m is about right. Most screenings were sold out tonight. I saw it at the Jam Factory which had a session each hour and it was about 90% sold out (noticed some seats empty).

IM1 had 22,224 admissions in its first two days, but they included May 1st (Labor Day = national holiday)

Strong start for 'Iron Man 2' overseas
Pic nabs $10 million in its first two days

Summer has already started at the foreign box office, where Paramount and Marvel Entertainment's "Iron Man 2" cumed a robust $10 million in its first two days from 3,200 screens in 21 territories.
Sequel, reuniting director Jon Favreau with Robert Downey Jr., doesn't open in the U.S. until May 7.

"Iron Man 2" opened in 21 territories Wednesday and Thursday, including major markets France, Australia, Korea and Russia.

Pic grossed $1.7 million in Australia, and the same amount in Korea. Opening day gross for Russia was $1.3 million. Sequel opened to $1.6 million in France, 11% ahead of the original film.

Friday, "Iron Man" expands into 32 more territories. That excludes Japan, China, India, Turkey, Finland, Germany and Austria, where the sequel rolls out later.

"Iron Man 2's" total opening location count is 6,500.

Generally speaking, a tentpole's domestic launch is the driver. But in this case, Paramount wanted to get in an extra weekend at the foreign box office, so that "Iron Man 2" has two weeks of play before Universal's opens Ridley Scott's Russell Crowe-topliner "Robin Hood."

"Iron Man 2" is expected to do substantial biz as it opens overseas, but it could be hampered by the calendar in terms of matching the $98 million earned by "Iron Man" in its first weekend. In 2008, the May Day holiday fell on a Thursday, making for a long weekend throughout Europe.

This year, May Day falls on a Saturday. Some countries have declared Monday a holiday as a result, including the U.K., Spain and Russia, but most have not.

"Iron Man 2" is the first Marvel pic released in theaters since the company was bought by Disney. However, Par retains distribution rights.

Opening in South Korea was on par with Transformers 2. The original did amazingly well there even on opening so expect this to easily enter the Top 10 largest opening weekends and may challenge for the Top 5. The entry into the top 5 is held by Transformers 2 at $15.57m (5-Days and $11.2m 3-Days).

RTH - Opening day here was less than IM1, as was Friday. Might end up with NZ$1.2m compared with IM1's NZ$1.3m.

Absolutely bloody awful.

All the opening numbers i've seen so far suggest that while this will definately improve on Iron Man 1's overseas results, it's not a blazer in the ilk of Pirates 2, Shrek 2 or perhaps even Transformers 2.

Update in Australia on Saturday, continues to sell out or close to sell out most of the Saturday night sessions. This definately has the makings of AU$10m it hink and some cinemas i've noticed have added another 1-2 sessions. Good on it.

Final Prediction - AU$10.5m. beating Alice in Wonderland.

OVERSEAS - Some Comparisons

Day 1:

King Kong - $8m (36/4569)
Iron Man - $8m (21)
The Golden Compass - $4.3m (9 territories)
Superman Returns - $2.2m (389,513 adms. on 955 prints - 4 territories - Australia/SKorea/Thailand/Philippines)
Iron Man 2 - $2.2m (Wed - France/Belgium/Norway/Netherlands/Switzerland - 6/960)
Batman Begins - $1.9m (4 territories - France/Mexico/Philippines/Malaysia)
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe - $1.7m (380 TC)
Superman Returns - $1.3m (548 prints - 3 territories - SKorea/Thailand/Philippines)

Day 2:

Star Wars 3: ROTS - $38.4m (Wed-Thu)
Iron Man - $30m (Wed + Thu)
Iron Man 2 - $10m (Wed + Thu - 21/3200)

----

Clearly not comparable because Iron Man 1 of course opened in more markets and presumeably different markets.

The total to beat is Iron Man's $98,588,581 (56/7588) for the whole weekend.

"SATURDAY UPDATE: Here's an update on international gross for Iron Man 2 which doesn't open in North America until May 7th. The sequel added $23 million on Friday bringing its overseas total to $33 million as the Robert Downie Jr starrer directed by Jon Favreau rolled into 32 more territories today, or 6,450 theaters across 53 markets, which is 80% of the global take. Highlights were Mexico, which delivered the 4th best opening day there of all time, or $2.1M."
