Post Re: Japan Box Office (Pg.1 Update); 4/17-18 Alice and Nodame
Alice in Wonderland (877 screens; 454 3D) - Y700m Yen ($7.6m) est. opening day, Y1.3b ($14m est.) 2day

First (I'll only be using foreign films for now), I'll start with probably the worst case scenario, an Indy IV type run. Both it and Alice had somewhat similar openings, Alice with the slightly better IM.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (789 screens) - Y847m Yen ($7.8m) opening day, $13.4m 2day. Y5.71b Yen ($63.2m) total.

If Alice in Wonderland follows Indiana Jones, it would finish between $65-$70m. That should be the worst case scenario though because Indiana Jones had some pretty awful legs.

A better comparison, in my opinion, would be a Harry Potter or Pirates film. So let's check a few of them out.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (761 screens) - Y1.4b Yen ($16.6m) 2day, Y10.02b Yen ($82.3m) total.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (826 screens) - $14.5m 3day, Y11.0b Yen ($90.49m) total.

I think these two are the best comparisons, and likely total range for Alice in Wonderland. But let's look at a possible best case scenario.

The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (729 screens) - $14.7m 2day, Y10.3b Yen ($100.2m) total.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (881 screens) - Y1.5b Yen ($15.9m 3day), Y10.9b Yen ($102.46m) total.

If Alice followed them, then $100m would be in play and probably likely due to 3D which could push it past Pirates 3 ($102.46m) to make it Disney's biggest film in the region.

I'm going to predict Y8b Yen ($86m) for Alice in Wonderland right now.

It seems unlikely but Alice could have a run like Indy 4. I know here in Hong Kong, it might just scrape by with a 3x multiplier (Depends how much it makes in IMAX this week). Word of mouth has been mixed...leaning towards negative. It's pretty much gone from theaters...last legs basically. I'm not sure if Japanese audiences are like Hong Kong audiences but one thing that has been noted by Arch is that Alice has not played well in Asian countries like South Korea.

Does Japan love Johnny Depp?

Excellent start though for it.

Yeah, Depp is probably the most popular actor. All of his films that I'm aware of since Pirates have debuted at No.1 (except Public Enemies). He was promoting Alice more than what's usual for a foreign film and their cast members.

Numbers gonna be posted soon. :D

2 - Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - II (Toho) - Y564,075,250m Yen ($6,134,947m USD), 437,613 admissions.
3 - Detective Conan 14: The Lost Ship in the Sky (Toho) - Y561,985,100m Yen ($6,112,214m USD), 471,527 admissions.
4 - Crayon Shin-chan 18: The Super Dimension (Toho) - Y270,868,100 ($2,945,992m USD) 238,831 admissions.

9 7 Pretty Cure DX2: All Stars (Toei) 5
10 4 Doraemon 30: Nobita's South Sea Adventure (Toho) 7
11 6 Sherlock Holmes (WB) 6

Alice in Wonderland lands itself a Top 10 Opening Weekend (8th), and being the film that ended Detective Conan's 10 year streak of winning this weekend.

I'll use last year's biggest opener and overall film for a comparison opening weekend wise.

Rookies The Movie - Y1,225,278,650b Yen ($12.9m), 987,387 admissions
Alice in Wonderland - Y1,316,539,200b Yen ($14.3m), 828,149 admissions

Nodame Cantabile opened 40% higher than the original which went on to gross Y4b ($44m), so $60m+ looks good, and what Toho expects.

Nodame Cantabile I - Y394,291,600m Yen ($4.37m), 317,302 admissions
Nodame Cantabile II - Y564,075,250m Yen ($6.13m), 437,613 admissions

And Detective Conan 14 opens to almost the exact same numbers as last years record film in the series. It went on to gross Y3.50b ($35.7m).

Detective Conan 13 - Y593,272,350 Yen ($6.02m), 501,732 admissions
Detective Conan 14 - Y561,985,100 Yen ($6.11m), 471,527 admissions

Crayon Shin-chan opened 70% higher than last year's film.

Crayon Shin-chan 17 - Y166,946,150m Yen ($1.7m), 149,202 admissions
Crayon Shin-chan 18 - Y270,868,100m Yen ($2.95m), 238,831 admissions.

This weekend was bigger than any weekend last year.

Edited.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (Pg.1 Update); 4/17-18, Results
Quote:
TOKYO – Megascreen theater company IMAX Corp. said Tuesday it will expand in Japan — the latest in a series of international deals inked recently amid growing demand for 3-D movies following the success of science fiction blockbuster Avatar.

The Canada-based company, along with local partner Tokyu Recreation, will add five of its giant 3-D equipped screens in the Japan over the next two years. Since Tokyu opened four IMAX theaters last year, box office receipts have exceeded expectations and convinced the Japanese company to build more.

"Performance has been really strong," said IMAX chief executive Richard Gelfond of the Japanese theaters. "It's probably the strongest start that we've had in any territory in our history."

The deal is part of the IMAX's aggressive expansion, particularly in Asia. Those plans had already been in place last year as the company sought growth and a rebound from losses in 2008.

But then Avatar — and its phenomenal success — came along in December. The film fueled revenues, piqued interest in 3-D worldwide and added momentum to IMAX's expansion.

Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time, also broke global IMAX box office records, bringing in $237 million on 256 screens. The company's biggest hit before the 3-D science fiction epic was the Dark Knight, which made $62 million.

Financial returns for movie theaters were already good, Gelfond said in Tokyo. "But Avatar really put them in another strata."

The agreement in Japan follows a 15-theater deal it signed last month in South Korea, a four-theater deal in France and an expanded partnership in Russia.
The emergence of 3-D televisions also has the company considering how to parlay its success into living rooms.

It may introduce a "very very high-end" 3-D home entertainment system in the future, Gelfond told The Associated Press. It is also working on a project with Sony Corp. and Discovery Communications to launch the first 3-D television channel next year.

"IMAX has been in the 3-D business for 25 years, so we have a fair amount of content in our library," Gelfond said.

The company was originally known for offering educational films in science centers and museums. In 2002, it introduced technology that enabled standard 35mm movies to be digitally converted for its large-format cinemas at a reasonable cost.

An IMAX screen is like high-definition TV for a movie theater. They can be anywhere from 40-feet high such as on 42nd Street in New York to eight-story tall screens in London and Sydney.

As many as 700 people can fit in a single cinema. The technology offers enhanced visual and sound quality for several dollars more than the price of a regular ticket.

Worldwide, there are 430 IMAX theaters in 48 countries, with at least 50 more on the way in 2010.
The company's revenue jumped 67 percent in 2009, and it rebounded to a net profit of $20.5 million. Its stock is up more than 200 percent over the past year.

This was probably finalized or decided after Alice in Wonderland opened, with reports saying it grossed 2x what Avatar did on IMAX screens the first two days.

And really, the whole IMAX/3D era should continue to do very well in the region. More-so than many others I think. If a film opens that isn't from a popular source material, a sequel, or that doesn't have a well known cast, that film disappoints in the market. Of the top 20 films of the decade, not a single one is without at least one those three factors.

I think this was also seen with Avatar's opening. While the opening was very good, it was slightly underwhelming. But then it picked up momentum and beat it's opening week several weeks in a row. The IMAX/3D experience is more like an "event", comparable with going to see the popular source material films I believe. And with so few Japanese going to the movies (even with how big Avatar turned out to be, only 7% of the population have seen it in theaters), it's going to help the more original films in the future perhaps.

What does it say about Avatar then that it didn't have a well known cast (excl. Sigourney Weaver), was not a sequel or based on a book or manga? Unless if you believe Avatar to have a well-known cast.

I don't know how much IMAX will help. I can't say anything about Japan since I don't know the market but if Hong Kong is any indication, quality defines how long it stays in IMAX theaters. Alice here only stuck around for 7 weeks. Now that's not bad, but it certainly is reflective of a typical blockbuster Hollywood release here. Alice was helped by Avatar to an extent. It drew on Avatar's goodwill to get people to see it in IMAX rather than 3D or 2D. As a follow-up, were there any other IMAX releases before Alice but after Avatar?

That's the point I was making about how IMAX/3D helped Avatar avoid "disappointing" numbers since it wasn't an adaptation, didn't have a well known cast (though Cameron's name you could argue was a slight factor), or a sequel. Rough figures would put Avatar's total at about $125m without IMAX/3D ticket prices, and Alice's opening just over $10m. Still great on both accounts, but it shows how much IMAX/3D has helped them.

The second half of the decade saw Hollywood films plummet, but with Avatar's performance, and so far what Alice has done, IMAX/3D looks like it'll help reverse the downward trend (or slow it down/stop it) with foreign releases. Up would be another example. It grossed about 25% more than Wall-E. But then you have a film like Ice Age 3 that bombed terribly (opened at No.10 and fell apart), not even coming close to Ice Age 2 or the original, and Monsters Vs Aliens which did poor numbers. So perhaps it's only going to help certain films, while others continue not catching on (such as CGI films that aren't released by Pixar) despite IMAX/3D.

It's still too early to be certain, and the IMAX/3D interest could fade over time, but I could see it helping because the Japanese only go see a film they know they'll like, or if it's an event film (like Michael Jackson). Basically, they NEED a reason to go the movies. They don't just go to see what's new in theaters. In 2008, the average person watched 1.3 films in theaters during the year for instance.

Nothing to really add on the Top 4 Openings that I haven't already stated a few posts up. Amazing for Alice, should gross over $70m, $80m+ possible. Nodame Cantabile II sees a big increase over the original and has $60m+ in sight. Detective Conan 14 matches the biggest debut in the franchise from last year, $35m looking good. And Crayon Shin-chan 18 sees a very big increase over last year's film and should become the biggest film in the franchise.

This weekend is one of the biggest of all time, bigger than any of the past few years, and perhaps even the BIGGEST of all time. BOM doesn't list a weekend that was bigger than this one (though they only released the Top 10 before 2007), so that's obviously a great thing.

The bad thing, the holdovers really suffered from so many big openers. Only Shutter Island managed a drop below 40%, and that's because it had a deflated opening weekend due to being a Friday release.

Doramon may not hit $35m, but it's still one of the biggest in the long running series.
Sherlock Holmes's chances of possibly high 20's was shut out, but good run regardless.
And Liar Game isn't likely to reach $30m, but again, another strong showing this early into the year.

Avatar suffered the most though having lost practically all it's 3D screens to Alice in Wonderland. This isn't unexpected however, because of all it's screens, 75% or more were 3D. So a huge drop was to be expected, and it'll likely be out of theaters on Friday when the remaining screens go to Clash of the Titans. The early DVD release (wait til after summer, fools) this week isn't going to help matters. It had a huge run and is going to finish with about $164m.

After 17 Weeks,

Spirited Away - $217.9m
Howl's Moving Castle - $176.4m
Avatar - $163.9m
Bayside Shakedown 2 - $155.1m (16 week total)
Ponyo - $153.1m
Harry Potter 1 - $152.9m
Harry Potter 2 - $142.8m

The Potters either ended their runs, and/or were no longer being tracked.

USD: All Time

Spoiler: show
1. Spirited Away - $234m
2. Titanic - $201.4m
3. Howl's Moving Castle - $190m
4. Ponyo on the Cliff - $172.2m
5. Princess Mononoke - $165.5m
6. Bayside Shakedown 2 - $164.5m
7. Avatar - $163.9m
8. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - $152.9m
9. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - $142.8m
10. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - $121.6m

Yen: All Time

Spoiler: show
1 Spirited Away ¥30.4b
2 Titanic ¥25.9b
3 Howl's Moving Castle ¥22b
4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ¥20.3b
5 Princess Mononoke ¥19.3b
6 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ¥18b
7 Bayside Shakedown 2 ¥17.35b
8 Ponyo ¥15.5b
9 Avatar ¥15.2b
10 The Last Samurai ¥13.7b

I thought it was locked to pass Bayside Shakedown 2 and Princess Mononoke in USD, but it just doesn't look like it can manage $500k+ during the week the DVD will be released and with Clash of the Titans on Friday to take whatever screens it has left. Avatar was still enormous either way.

And I can only see Bayside Shakedown 3 beating Alice in Wonderland's opening weekend. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I could, too, but I doubt it'll get a 2day release.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (Pg.1 Update); 4/17-18, Results
Golden Week

The Golden Week is a collection of four national holidays within seven days. In combination with well placed weekends, the Golden Week becomes one of Japan's three busiest holiday seasons, besides New Year and the Obon week.

Trains, airports and sightseeing spots get very crowded during Golden Week, and accommodation in tourist areas can get booked out well in advance.

The national holidays making up the Golden Week are:

April 29
Showa Day (Showa no hi):
April 29 is the birthday of former Emperor Showa, who died in the year 1989. Until 2006, Greenery Day (see May 4) used to be celebrated on this day.

May 3
Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi):
On this day in 1947, the new post war constitution was put into effect.

May 4
Greenery Day (Midori no hi):
Until 2006, Greenery Day used to be celebrated on April 29, the birthday of former Emperor Showa. The day is dedicated to the environment and nature, because the emperor loved plants and nature. Before being declared Greenery Day, May 4 used to be a national holiday due to a law, which declares a day, that falls between two national holidays, a national holiday.

May 5
Children's Day (Kodomo no hi):
The Boy's Festival (Tango no Sekku) is celebrated on this day. Families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls, both symbolizing strength, power and success in life. The Girl's Festival, by the way, is celebrated on March 3.

Golden Week 2010:

In 2010, the Golden Week will consist of an isolated public holiday (April 29) and a 5-day weekend (May 1-5). Travel activity is anticipated to peak on May 1 with people leaving the large urban centers and on May 5 in the opposite direction. Heavy traffic can also be expected on April 29 and May 4.

Thu April 29, Fri April 30, Sat May 1, Sun May 2, Mon May 3, Tue May 4, Wed May 5

It used to be custom for studios to release highly anticipated films at the start of Golden Week to amass a huge early gross sum (like when Spider-Man 3 easily broke the 5-day record when it grossed over $26m), but over the past few years it's more common to see studios release films a week or two before Golden Week to give them a longer run.

And this year there are three big films that just broke the Weekend Record in Japan are heading into Golden Week. This has resulted in Disney stating they believe Alice in Wonderland will gross Y10b Yen (about $108m) before it ends it's run. Detective Conan always opens a couple weeks before Golden Week, so it's gross shouldn't differ much from last year's film, so Toho has it's usual projections for the series (over Y3b or about $35m). Toho does have much higher expectations for Nodame Cantabile The Movie II, and are expecting a gross over Y6b Yen (or about $65m).

This year's Golden Week isn't going to be without competition, however. Many studios are releasing films between now and during Golden Week this year.

Opening this weekend we have Clash of the Titans, Wolfman, Gintama The Movie, and Righteous Kill.

Then the Golden Week openers to follow, include: Yazima Beauty Salon The Movie (4/29), Arthur and the Minimoys 2 (4/29), Zebraman 2 (5/1), King of Thorns (5/1), and Sawako Decides (5/1).

None of the Golden Week openers will be especially big, but I'd keep and eye on Yazima Beauty Salon and Zebraman 2.

Both are receiving the most marketing, and both will have a following coming out to see them. Yazima will have their comedy fans, music fans (new single was released today for the movie), and those wanting the Hello Kitty tie-in. And Zebraman 2 will have it's cult following from the original a few years back, as well as music fans of the lead actress who also has a single just released in character.

On Saturday, May 1st, normal tickets will be reduced to Y1,000 Yen (about $11), and 3d tickets reduced to Y1,300 (about $14), but no word on IMAX. About 40% off for the day overall.

So with the record breaking openers of this past weekend, and a strong slate of films between now and during Golden Week, this year is shaping up to probably be the biggest year yet.

4/24-25 Weekend Forecast

Following last week's Record Weekend, there are another 4 openers looking to debut in the Top 10. They won't come close to matching last week's openers, but they look to do very solid business the week before Golden Week begins.

Projected Top 10:

ImageImage

1. Alice in Wonderland 2
2. Detective Conan 14: Lost Ship in the Sky 2
3. Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - II 2
4. Gintama The Movie NEW
5. Clash of the Titans NEW

6. Crayon Shin-chan 18: Super Dimension 2
7. Wolfman NEW
8. Shutter Island 3
9. District 9 3
10. Tida-kankan: Umi to sango to chiisana kiseki NEW

-projections by umedaotoko

The Top 3 are unlikely to change (and probably won't until mid May), though Detective Conan should beat Nodame Cantabile this week because animated films tend to have slightly better weekend holds, while live-action make up for it in the weekdays.

Alice in Wonderland is sure to Top once again, and likely will for many weeks to come. This weekend will help determine where the film is headed in total (Disney is expecting over $100m). A goal for Alice's 9 day total should be $30m. Normally a film's run is determined by the total after the second weekend. If it fails to double it's opening weekend after 9days, it's not going to have a long run.

A few examples (openings comparable with Alice):

Poor - Indiana Jones IV - $13.4m 2day, $25m 9day
Average - Pirates of the Caribbean 2 - $16.5m 2day, $33m 9day.
Good - Boys Over Flowers Final - $9.7m 2day, $25m 9day.
Great - Rookies The Movie - $12.9m 2day, $34.5m 9day.

All had big debuts like Alice, but much different 9day totals. Indiana Jones IV fell apart, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was steady, and Boys Over Flowers and Rookies more than doubled their opening weekends. Results, Indiana Jones IV - $62m, Pirates 2 - $82m, Boys Over Flowers - $86m, Rookies - $94m.

So anything around $30m is going to lock $80m up for Alice, especially with Golden Week coming up. And if it happens to be closer or possibly a bit better than Rookies 9day total, $100m is definitely in play and likely with Golden Week.

Of the new openers, Clash of the Titans and Wolfman opened on Friday, so their opening weekend will be subdued a little bit. And Gintama fans have been waiting a long time for a movie, and while it won't receive nearly as many screens as Clash or Wolfman, the attendence will be much, much higher.

Gintama The Movie, playing on 90 screens, got off to a big start with 80% of it's first day showings being sold out, being more than expected. The studio is now expecting Gintama to eventually surpass Y2b Yen or about ($22m USD).

Gintama has sold over 28m copies of it's 32 volumes since Dec. 2003 in Japan, placing 5th in most copies sold during 2009.

1. One Piece - 14,721,241 (186m)
2. Naruto - 6,836,494 (95m)
3. Bleach - 6,471,021 (71m)
4. FullMetal Alchemist - 5,810,522 (40m)
5. Gintama - 4,733,511 (28m)

Post Re: Japan Box Office - Golden Week Preview; Weekend Forecast
Some numbers for the foreign films:

Alice in Wonderland grossed Y955m Yen or about $10.2m in it's second weekend, down only 29%.

Here are some 9day totals (10day for Pirates 3), and their second weekends for some comparable films that either opened near or over 10m, or have a similar theme:

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - $36.1m (9.6m [-21%] second weekend), $102.4m total
Rookies The Movie - $34.5m ($10.9m [-14%] second weekend), $94.55m total
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 - $32.4m ($6.1m [-63%] second weekend), $82.4m total
The Lord of the Rings 3 -$31.8m ($7.5m [-48%] second weekend), $100.2m total
Harry Potter 4 - $30m ($9m [-21%] second weekend), $90.5m total
Boys Over Flowers Final - $25.1m ($7.3m [-24%] second weekend), $86.1m total
Indiana Jones 4 - $25m ($5.7m [-58%] second weekend), $63.4m total

I don't see the 9day total yet for Alice, but my guess is over $35m. And with such a strong hold, and Golden Week to come, Disney's expected $100m+ total honestly looks locked. I'd go as far to expect possibly $115m+.

This is going to give 2010 three guaranteed $100m films (Avatar, Alice, and Bayside Shakedown 3), with Harry Potter being a contender, and The Borrowers with an outside shot as well. 2003 is currently the biggest year on record in Japan (2009 is second), and it too had three $100m+ films: Bayside Shakedown 2 - $164.5m, The Last Samurai - $119.6m, Finding Nemo - $102m. But with so many big films this year already, and a summer that is going to be massive, 2010 is easily going to top it.

Clash of the Titans opened to $3.1m on 481 screens. Most likely this is the 3day total since that's what Variety, THR, etc. normally report.

Not a bad opening, but a bit underwhelming. 10,000 BC opened a week before Golden Week and managed a multiplier of about 6.5. If Clash of the Titans follows a similar pattern (using $2.4m as the 2day), it's probably looking at a total around $14m or so.

And Alice in Wonderland's 9day total is est. at $37.2m, even bigger than Pirates 3's 10day.

Rough projected Top 10 for 2010:

Bayside Shakedown: The Movie 3 - $150-$200m
Avatar - $164m
Alice in Wonderland - $105-$115m
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I - $95-$105m
The Borrowers Arrietty - $70-$80m
Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - II - $60m-$70m
Umizaru 3 - $60-70m
Toy Story 3 - $45m-$55m
Pokemon 13 - $45m-$55m
One Piece 10 Strong World - $54.1m

Basically, it's set to dominate any previous year's Top 10 with ease.

What is Bayside Shakedown about?

Can the increase in grosses be due to a weak Dollar against Yen?

Post Re: Japan Box Office - 4/24-25; Alice still No.1 ($100m+ likely)
Bayside Shakedown was a very popular Tv show in the 90's. I'll copy the summary from Wiki:

Quote:
Bayside Shakedown takes place in the fictional Wangan Precinct of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Unlike most police dramas which tend to focus on action and car chases, Bayside Shakedown focused largely on the bureaucratic issues of the police department that is also very present in many other sectors of Japanese society.

The series depicted police work as office politics under a slightly different environment, complete with bureaucratic red tape, lethargic civil servants, bosses more interested in playing golf and saving face than solving crimes, interference from politicians, and conflict between Police Headquarters and the local officers (one of the major themes throughout the series).

In fact, like their real world counterparts in Japan, the officers depicted in Bayside Shakedown are not permitted to carry firearms except during major emergencies (which, in the life of the local precinct officer at Wangan, almost never happens).

The main character of the series is a young detective named Shunsaku Aoshima (played by Yuji Oda in the TV and film adaptations). Aoshima originally worked as a corporate salesperson, but decided to join the police department out of idealism expecting a life of adventure and excitement. Once inside, he was completely underwhelmed by life on the police force, which he found to be almost the same as corporate life. Throughout the series, he tries to balance his ideals of what police work should be with the bureaucratic reality, often with humorous results.

The first film released in 1998 grossed 10.1b Yen or about $84m at the time. With the current exchange rate, 10.1b yen would be about $108m. It was the biggest film in 1998 (Armageddon was a Dec. release, so it was counted as 1999) and became the 5th biggest film all time.

The second film, released in 2003 grossed 17.35b Yen or about $164.5m, which was more than enough to make it the No.1 film of the year and biggest live action film (local) beating the original Bayside Shakedown for that title. And with the current exchange rate, 17.35b yen would be about $185m.

The third film is bringing back original cast members from the tv show, as well as some in the first movie that weren't in the sequel. Expectations, as you'd expect, are very high after 7 years (though there's been spin offs and such during this time). And this time, the lead character (Yuji Oda) is the Chief of Police.

As for the other question, not when compared to last year (Dollar vs Yen). It's roughly the same so far.

This year's grosses are so big simply because the films being released are big themselves. Well known, anticipated sequels, manga adaptations etc.

And Avatar and Alice can be explained because they have 3D. Avatar would still have grossed $125m or so (approx.) without 3D, but it clearly boosted the total in a big way. Similar with Alice. If you remove 3D, it would probably be around $26m right now, not $37m. I mentioned some posts above about how 3D is probably going to boost the box office more than most other regions because the Japanese rarely go to the movies, and when they do, it's for sequels, adaptations, etc. So I think interest in 3D is high and it's clearly bringing people out to see them that normally wouldn't in theaters. Though there still are exceptions. 3D helped Up, but not significantly, Toy Story 1/2 did very little, G-Force won't reach $10m, and Ice Age 3 bombed last year grossing a few million. They all are CGI films though, and they've never done well unless it's Pixar.

Bayside Shakedown is 踊る大捜査線! I knew about the TV series all along. But I didn't know the film version was that big in Japan. The original tv series and movie were both popular and critically acclaimed in Hong Kong. The new movie may get picked up by a distributor and released in Hong Kong.

Pretty much all the popular TV Series get adapted into film(s). There's rarely a weekend that doesn't have a TV series adaptation or manga adaptation being released. And then many TV shows are based on manga. This has especially become the trend over the past few years and is fueling the local box office industry. The biggest live-action film (foreign releases included) in 2008 was Boys Over Flowers (Manga > TV Series), you might know that one as 花より男子, and in 2009 was Rookies (Manga > TV Series).

Manga > TV Series/Anime > Film(s) is most common, and probably makes up 4/5 of all local releases. 15/17 weekends this year has had at least one adaptation released.

Naruto Shippuden 4: The Lost Tower is now scheduled for release on July 31st. July is already very crowded, but at least it's being released the last day of the month. The films in the series have never been too big though, grossing just over Y1b Yen each year, or about $11m on average. The same can't be said about the manga, however, as news of it hitting the 100m copies mark was released today.

Quote:
The Japanese producer Shueisha has announced that it has printed 100,400,000 books in Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto ninja manga series. Shueisha will release the 51st volume of Naruto on Friday. Naruto is the fifth Shueisha manga to surpass the 100-million mark; among others, it follows in the foosteps of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga (189 million copies, 57 volumes), Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball action manga (152 million copies, 42 volumes), Osamu Akimoto's Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo police comedy manga (142 million copies, 164 volumes), and Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk basketball manga (117 million copies, 31 volumes).

With this, and the Shippuden 4th Movie focusing on a character fans have longed for more information on, perhaps The Lost Tower can go a bit higher than the previous films.

4/24-25

1 1 Alice in Wonderland (Disney) - Y958m Yen ($10.2m USD), 855 screens, 640,000 admissions/total: Y3.5b Yen ($37.3m), 2.25m admissions
2 3 Detective Conan: Lost Ship in the Sky (Toho) - Y1.1b Yen ($11.8m USD), 352 screens, 1m+ admissions
3 2 Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score - II (Toho) - Y1.3b Yen ($13.9m USD), 410 screens, 1m+ admissions
4 NEW Gintama The Movie (WB) - Y200m Yen ($2.2m USD), 90 screens, 160,000 admissions
5 NEW Clash of the Titans (WB) - $3.1m 3day (according to Variety), 481 screens

6 4 Crayon Shin-chan (Toho) 325 screens
7 5 Shutter Island (Paramount)
8 NEW Idakankan the Sea and Coral (Elementary Gate)
9 6 District 9 (WB/Gaga)
10 7 My Darling is a Foreigner (Toho)
11 NEW Wolfman (Towa/Toho)

Alice is a bit of a beast, and Disney is expecting the film to reach 4.5m admissions and Y7b Yen (or $75m USD) by the end of May 7th, and finish over Y10b ($108m+) before it's finished. They have also released that 82% of it's gross is coming from 3D screens.

No weekend numbers for Detective Conan or Nodame Cantabile, but both crossed the 1m admissions mark and the Y1b Yen mark after 9 days.

Gintama The Movie opened on 90 screens and will have the highest PTA by far in the Top 10 with it's very good opening.

Clash of the Titans might be above Gintama on Wednesday as this chart is based on admissions, so it'd have the higher tickets between the two. An est. 3.1m 3day likely translates to about $2.3m or so for the 3day, so it'll be close most likely.

*I'll update the Top 10 with Variety numbers when available.

Another huge weekend beating all but a couple from previous years, and this in April!

Simply an amazing hold for Alice in Wonderland. You have to go back to 2004's Howl's Moving Castle for a larger 9day total. Alice in Wonderland's 9day is even bigger than Avatar's 12day, and Golden Week is still a few days away. Its probably going to be No.1 until we get into June I believe. As I said yesterday, Disney is expecting $75m by May 7th, and over $100m in total. $100m is probably low balling it at this point though. $125m is a reasonable possibility.

I'm a bit surprised Nodame Cantabile II beat out Detective Conan once again (even if by a small margin again). It's a great hold going into Golden Week, with Toho expecting a gross over $60m.

Detective Conan drops just a little harder than last year's film, but it's still keeping up with their 9day total's being nearly the exact same. Since it's staying right with last year's film, a total similar to it is also likely ($35m or so).

As I thought, Clash of the Titans pulled ahead of Gintama because of it's higher tickets. But it's an underwhelming opening and probably won't stay around for too long.

Gintama delivers the highest PTA, and WB is expecting a gross of $20m.

Terrible for The Wolfman.

The rest of the holdovers continue to see pretty large drops, mostly due to the competition of the Top 3 films which broke the all-time weekend record last weekend.

Shutter Island is still doing good though and should beat The Departed.

Doraemon has fallen apart after it spent 5 weeks at No.1 during March and early April. But checking previous years shows it's always dropped like this once Detective Conan opens in April. This year's film still beat last year's by 35% though.

No.1 films so far this year:

Avatar - first 9 weeks
Doraemon - next 5 weeks
Shutter Island- 1 week
Alice in Wonderland - last 2 weeks

Four films for the first half of the year because Alice isn't likely to lose No.1 until June :funny: And then July 3rd when Bayside Shakedown opens, it'll likely be No.1 until late August or September, and then Umizaru 3 will dominate September and probably into the beginning of October. 2010 is looking to have less than 10 films at No.1.

Top 5 Biggest 2nd Weekends (2002-2010):

1 1 Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle) Toho $11,680,683 -16.6% 450 +2 $25,957 $44,430,337 2
1 1 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets WB $11,362,708 -31.9% 845 -13 $13,447 $37,308,970 2
1 1 Alice in Wonderland (2010) Disney $10,909,651 -22.3% 877 +18 $12,440 $37,698,771 2
1 1 Rookies: Sotsugyô Toho $10,858,252 -14.5% 428 - $25,370 $34,443,009 2
1 1 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BVI $9,614,786 -20.5% 873 -8 $11,014 $36,147,242 2

Hmm, Alice is practically on par with Harry Potter 2 (OW, 2nd Weekend, and total) which finished over $140m, but then there's Pirates 3 which barely crossed $100m and the runs so far are comparable enough. This could be interesting. It's cool how the local films have half as many screens.

82% of Alice's total is all from 3D (454 screens).

Targets for Alice next weekend,

Top 5 Biggest 3rd Weekends (2002-2010 + Spirited Away):

Spoiler: show
1 1 Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle) Toho $9,832,775 -15.8% 450 - $21,851 $65,878,472 3

1 1 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BVI $7,733,526 -19.6% 842 -31 $9,185 $50,746,381 3

Pirates 4 in 3D will be something to watch.

Golden Week

In less than 12 hours, Golden Week begins in Japan. From April 29th - May 5th, most of the country will be on vacation with tourists causing the airports and streets to overflow to attend the many festivals and site viewings. This time also boosts the box office. The bigger films have already opened two weeks ago or this past week, but this year has a wide variety of films opening. However, Hollywood skipped the week releasing their films the past couple week.

King of Thorn is a science fiction survivor drama. For its most part, the story is viewed through the eyes of one of the protagonists, a Japanese girl named Kasumi. She is introduced as one of only 160 people in the whole world who were chosen as candidates to experiment a cure against the deadly Medusa virus, a mortal disease which was running rampant in the world. Such an event is not met with joy by Kasumi, who is forced to enter treatment and cold sleep without her twin sister Shizuku, whom she cares much about.

An unknown amount of time later, however, some of those put in hibernation abruptly woke up, only to find the facility where they were supposed to be treated in a total state of decay, invaded by a lush jungles of trees and especially strange vines covered in thorns, which appear to have something of a mind on their own. Not only that, but the survivors soon discover that the entire ruin is filled with strange, dinosaur-like creatures and other monstrous aberrations of nature. Thinking that a great amount of time passed since their arrival on the island, soon the survivors discover not only that their sleep was indeed too short to label such dramatic changes as natural occurrence, but also that the situation in and of itself is far greater than they could imagine.

Bungaku Shoujo (Literature Girl): The "mysterious school comedy" centers on the unusual members of a high school literary club. Her club subordinate is Konoha Inoue, a second-year high school boy who writes stories every day for Amano to eat. He once wrote an award-winning novel, but he wrote it under the penname Miu Inoue so readers thought the author was a mysterious 14-year-old bishōjo novelist.
