The Ghost Writer: Early 2010 contender?
(An amazing film. Please see it!) I believe we have our first major contender of 2010 in The Ghost Writer, the new film by Roman Polanski. - Reviews are stellar (four 100's on Metacritic, including Roger Ebert) - The cast is attractive and respected (Ewan McGregor, Pierce Bronsnan, An Education's Olivia Williams, Tom Wilkinson) - Roman Polanski is beloved. Controversial, an outlaw, but also beloved. After his recent crisis, many of Hollywood responded by signing a free-Polanski petition. And there was a standing ovation when he won for The Pianist and the famous story of Scorsese saying if he had to lose, he's glad it was to Roman. Polanski's name helps, doesn't hurt, even now. Or am I wrong? So, any thoughts? Do we have an early major contender in The Ghost Writer?

I was thinking just the same thing two days ago. Especially after Summit put itself on the map so impressively with THL.
Definitely possible.

The main problem is the early release date. But the fact it's Polanski (and could be his last film) definitely should keep it in people's memories.

Yeah, this is retarded. I don't give a fuck who made the film as long as the film is good.

Assuming the academy maintains this absurd 10 nominations rule, and given the seemingly pathetic state of the 2010 field, this film could very easily be the "An Education" or, perhaps more fitting, "A Serious Man" of this year.
