What were your favorite television sitcoms growing up?
So, what were your favorite sitcoms growing up?
I Love Lucy The Golden Girls Threes Company All in the Family Roseanne
These five, while some might say are dated, have escaped obscurity into a universal appeal -- all doing fairly well in syndication. All played around the world. All doing very well when they aired originally -- and all doing fairly well in syndication for years.
I Love Lucy, Golden Girls, Roseanne, and Three's Company all did well on DVD too! All in the Family, however, slumped which surprised me. It didn't sell well at all.
-------------------------------------
Mama's Family '83-'90
The show changes from night to day as it goes on... It transitioned from NBC to syndication between '84-'86 -- yep, a very long 2 year hiatus. Known for being the number 1 show in syndication when it returned in '86.
Mama goes from crusty old woman to bitchy, but lovable by season 3. Characters kind of get dumbed down into doing dumber things during the transition. The Grandchildren disappear, a new one is introduced, along with a new neighbor, and the show ended up doing better during its 3rd season. The remodeling of the show worked for ratings, but some fans of Carol Burnett hate this revamped show.
Two episodes that stand out from Season 1 are "The Wedding." This is where Eunice came in and they were quality episodes -- and some of the most memorable ones.
Rue McClanahan hated her role so much that she is killed off by season 3 -- before this season -- transitioning over to the Golden Girls along with Betty White. Betty White makes one final appearance in season 3 as Ellen in an excellent plastic surgery episode.
------------------------------------
Honorable mention goes to The Cosby Show.
Although this seems more like rotten candy compared to the above shows. Sweet enough to rot your teeth! The safest and sweetest show overall. Number one show and did fine in syndication.
On the other hand, I used to watch Gimmi a Break, Family Ties, The Hogan Family/Valerie's Family, Growing Pains, etc., too. These shows, however, are pretty much dated and stuck in their 80s time period. They did fine when aired in the 80's. However, they haven't done as well past the early 90's, in syndication. Growing Pains and Family Ties disappeared pretty quickly from Nick at Nite, for example. Gimmi a Break bombed ridiculously hard on DVD. Growing Pains didn't make it past the first season on DVD.
The Facts of Life somehow escaped this (probably one of the cheesiest shows of the decade/one of the most 80's), and did pretty well in the early 2000's in syndication on Nick at Nite. DVD sales not doing so hot though! It's popularity in the early 2000's seems to have petered out, and I don't see it anymore playing anywhere.
So, which ones did you used to watch growing up, and do you still watch them?

*Fresh Prince (remember the Shaft wedding episode) *Married with Children *Simpsons *Mama's Family (loved the one liner's) *Golden Girls *Living Single *Martin
These were my favs. I have a few more regular shows that I've watched but they aren't on the same level of rewatchability.

How is Friends not on anybody's list???
Along with Friends, I also loved, off the top of my head...
Gilligan's Island Seinfeld Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Married... With Children Perfect Strangers Growing Pains Saved By the Bell Home Improvement Coach
Oh, and MacGyver is one of the best TV shows ever, but it's not a sitcom.

Re: What were your favorite television sitcoms growing up?
Sticking to ones that I watched within their time period, here's a rough order of what I watched faithfully from the late 70's through the 90's:
70's MASH Good Times WKRP in Cincinnati Different Strokes
80's Mork and Mindy Cosby Show Newhart Cheers Simpsons Seinfeld
90's Friends King of Queens Everybody Loves Raymond
Old Timey Sitcoms That I Watched Regularly, But Were Before My Time: I Love Lucy Dick Van Dyke Show Mary Tyler Moore Show Bob Newhart Show Andy Griffith Show Gilligan's Island Bewitched Leave it to Beaver
SITCOMS OF TODAY: Big Bang Theory How I Met Your Mother The Office 30 Rock
