Post Re: HARRY POTTER 8 or is it HP 7 1/2? Predictions
I was just looking for some Harry Potter 7/8 topic and found this one. Harry Potter 7 Pt.1 and Pt. 2 were announced to be in 3D! Harry Potter is one of the most consistent franchises around.

Here are the top adjusted openings for the Harry Potter films that saw 3day opening weekends.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire $123,511,506.91
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $122,998,503.16
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets $117,252,363.59
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban $116,317,165.79

A 3D premium could equate these openings to:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire $160,564,958.98
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $159,898,054.11
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets $152,428,072.67
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban $151,212,315.53

Here are the adjusted box office totals for the HP films:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $432,598,496.55
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire $348,830,032.38
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets $347,664,577.66
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $327,232,053.78
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince $314,037,565
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban $309,816,689.53

With a 3D premium, these totals would equate to to:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $562,378,045.52
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire $453,479,042.09
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets $451,963,950.96
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $425,401,669.91
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince $408,248,834.34
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban $402,761,696.39

If 3D is added, I think we could see a $150 m opening weekend and a $400 m box office gross from the next Harry Potter film!

Keep in mind that the premium I'm using may be on the low side. By the time HP7 is released there will be ALOT more 3D theaters around. The share could go even higher of tickets that come from 3D screens. Harry Potter is a film franchise that the fans saw in droves in Imax, so they could very well also go in droves to see it in 3D, especially if the studio has more 3D access by that time. Moviegoers will definitely pay a premium for the best moviegoing experience for a film like this...

3D is the way to break the consistency for the franchise here. I'm surprised WB didn't give HP6 the 3D treatment. Not doing so caused them to lose to Fox's Ice Age last summer OS, and in turn, $1b WW.

Ya, 3D changes everything. Definitely will help boost the last movies along with the two parts being very momentous signifying the end of Harry Potter.

Here are the non-adjusted overseas totals for the HP films:

6 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $657.2
8 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $646.2
9 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince $632.0
14 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire $605.9
17 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets $616.7
25 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban $546.1

With HP4 doing $606 m, HP5 doing $646 m, and HP6 doing $632 m, it would be very hard to not see a huge uptick in overseas box office grosses for this franchise as well. 5/17 biggest films of all time worldwide are HP films, and 3/9 biggest films of all time ww are HP films. If Ice Age 3 can become a nearly $700 m film overseas, I think HP7 Pt. 1 and 2 could be looking at $850 - 900 m overseas, and perhaps $400 m domestically with 3D. This is a film that people worldwide will definitely pay a premium for to see it in 3D (ie the best moviegoing experience).

I could see HP7 Pt 1 jumping to $1.25 - $1.30 billion or so for its total ww tally.

Yeah, I really doubt I'll see HP7: Part I in 3D. 1. It wasn't being made with 3D in mind until WB realized they were going to lose to Fox and Ice Age 3, imo, so the chances 3D will simply be tacked on to it are high. HP6 would have been in 3D is WB planned to use the technology for the series. And 2. The first half HP7 honestly doesn't require 3D.

I'd consider Part II however.

See, that's the kind of attitude i don't quite understand. You seem to think 3D is only good for the whizbang (i assume part 2 is the more actiony part). No, even in a scene where 2 people are talking (good) 3D enhances it. It's like walking around with one eye covered, why would you want to do that when you can see in stereo with both eyes?

Nah, I'll compare Ice Age 3 and Coraline again. The 3D scene I remember most from Ice Age 3 is a scene where magma comes flying towards the viewer. Which I guess would be compared to an "action" scene. I didn't really like it and felt it was pretty unnecessary, especially after paying $12 to see it. I would have enjoyed it just the same with a $7 ticket. The 3D in Coraline however worked very well, an example being the rain drops on windows. I definitely prefer the 3D effects that aren't right in your face screming "look at me!".

Can you explain how a scene in 3D with two people talking is worth paying 40% or more to see?

Because that's how i see things in real life, in 3D. It makes even two people talking more immersive, like you would be really there with them.

I like the color analogy. I would have payed the premium for seeing things in color instead of black & white some 70 years ago.

I agree with Corpse. My family paid a lot extra to see Up in 3D, amazing movie, but totally didn't need the 3D. I find a normal 2D film to always be a lot more beautiful than if it was in 3D. Even if they were the same price, I'd probably still go with 2D most of the time.

I mean, I will pay the extra money to see a film in 3D, but I'm not one who will pay the extra cost to see every movie I see in theaters in 3D. If I feel I can personally enjoy it just as much in 2D, that's the way I'd be going. If a film, such as Clash of the Titans, is being "converted" to 3D, to me it's not going to be worth the extra money when the film was originally developed without 3D in mind. Same thing with HP7 Part I, and why I said I'd consider Part II.

I'd much rather catch Alice in Wonderland in 3D for instance, but that's partly because I'd pay $12 or more for a normal ticket for it anyway.

The 3D factor isn't a big problem for me as it may be for many here though. I only see 7 or 8 films in theaters a year.

Alice probably isn't a good example since you could consider me a Burton or Depp (Carter, Rickman, etc.) fanboy anyway. I wouldn't mind paying more to see it even in 2D. I traveled 3 hours to see Sweeney in theaters twice.

Finally I found this thread LOL

HP 7.1 after the last holiday weekend earned estimated 4.4m for an estimated total of 283.2m. After 45 days it is tracking 8.1m ahead of GOF, this number should go down by about 1m on Monday since GOF earned almost 2m on Monday which was the extra holiday that year. It is also tracking 9.2m behind HBP and this will increase because 46th and 47th days were weekend for HBP.

It is certain now that with harder drops and quick theater drops it will not reach 300m. If it matches the multiplier of GOF it will end around 298m which is highly unlikely. I think the best it will do it 295m if it holds well in the coming weekends. From the current drops it will just pass Inception for 293m total.

I assume a 5-day opening...

Opening Weekend (5-day) - $186 million

Total Gross - $350 million

We all slightly over-predict the Harry Potter films, so I'm going to be a little more conservative with this one.

$145 million (3-day) or $175 million (5-day), $325 million total.

Definitely a very good trailer. They did show a lot of money shots which will definitely urge people to come out OW. 3D will definitely help it....so a huge 5-day and OW for sure
