I learned a while ago that box office, and whether a film deserves its box office aren't related.

You can have the best film of the year make $1 m, and the worst film of the year make $400 m.

But out of those three, I'd say Titanic deserved it the most, followed by Avatar, and then The Dark Knight. While I was on the fence before, Avatar is headed for the best legs seen by any film in the past decade with a 10.0 possible when the previous best was 8.24 (NATM). With legs like that, I think it is worthy of #1.

Avatar is getting people who don't normally see movies to see this movie.

well, just wondering how much the 3D effect is contributing to the Avatar Box Office....

and what would have happened if Titanic was in 3D???

Plus I think I got charged $3 or 5 dollars more for the 3D Avatar price over other movies that were playing.

Titanic, but I wouldn't mind seeing Avatar beating it unlike the others.

TDK never deserved to be in the Top 15.

3D has certainly inflated the total box office, but great legs are still great legs. I take the total box office it will get with a grain of salt, but to have the best legs for a $20 m + opener of the past decade is what makes its run so impressive.

Should probably be one of Cameron's because of what he did to advance the medium and appeal to bigger audiences. In that regard Avatar definitely deserves the award.

I don't believe what medium one uses to see a movie. Though Titanic made the spectacular run without any advantages I'd say it did not have as stern competitive market as Avatar is having.

As we are going in every decades movies are going out of people's mind, there are a very few like movie buffs and lot of advancements in human life which repel audience from theaters.

I'd say Titanic before any in the decades but considering the money Avatar has made and has done worldwide is some extraordinary feet which none of the movies have even come close to doing. Such movies come once in a while and I don't see Avatar's success being repeated by any of the 3D movies in the near future.

Though we are talking about a decade long difference and no advantages for Titanic and the money it made then was one of the biggest achievements of 20th century not only for the studios but for entire industry which opened the doors to Worldwide audience. Titanic run cannot be repeated even by Avatar.

Avatar edges out in the department of coming true of the expectations because Titanic was never preceded by a world wide smash hit movie. It was preceded by movies that were great but not an outright game changer.

Final Verdict: I loved Titanic more than Avatar but in terms of money making Avatar edges out and I would say the better deserving movie

In reading your post, you seem to give more points to Titanic than Avatar.

Yes I did and I already said that I liked Titanic more than Avatar.

But the overall thing is that Avatar still edges out not because it is a better movie but the legs at this time are amazing. Though it will not stay as long as Titanic in the market it will still come closer to its gross(unadjusted) and that is the only achievement it can make. Movies like GWTW can otherwise never be defeated (unadjusted). So it is time to move forward and what better than to have another original movie like Avatar which attracts both Domestic as well as Worldwide audience.

but if you are basing it totally on the tickert gross than you have to balance the numbers of how it got there....

for example, lets say that a movie was know to be so good and they wanted to charge 100 a ticket...and it grossed one billion dollars.....would that be double the accomplishment of Titantic and Avatar based on it beating their 600 Million Dollar Numbers.

Nope it is not that way what I said was that it will come close to Titanic's unadjusted figure and that is what we can expect now. Also it is time to move on to newer movies because otherwise GWTW can never be replaced from the Top position and as time passes by the inflation will make those numbers insanely huge and none of the movies will be able to catch up.

If we just talk about grosses Titanic never deserves to be #1 anyways since it is not the highest grossing movie unadjusted. To touch that mark is what Titanic did when it reached Top 10 All time. Though Avatar may not reach that but Top 15 of all time unadjusted is not bad either.

And I am not basing it totally on the ticket grosses, there were other factors which I considered previously and I don't feel like discussing them again here
