Who'll get the fifth spot in the Best Actress line-up?
It's obvious that Gabourey Sidibe, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan are all locks at this point. Helen Mirren looks like the likely candidate for the fifth position.
However, each year we see surprises among Oscar nominations (think Tommy Lee Jones for In the Valley of Elah) and while the Best Actor line-up looks very solid to me at this point (Freeman/Renner/Bridges/Firth/Clooney are all locks, IMO), the fifth Actress spot is a bit shakier. Helen Mirren got a SAG nomination and a Golden Globe nom...but apart from that she hasn't shown up almost anywhere else this awards season, so I wouldn't call her a lock just yet.
What is even more surprising to me is that she didn't get a BAFTA nom (even though she was on the longlist). Saoirse Ronan and Audrey Tautou both made it in over her, even though she's a very respected British actress. Mirren also missed a BFCA nom.
Who are candidates to replace her? I'm thinking:
Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria) - Golden Globe nom, BFCA nomination. Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) - BAFTA nom, BFCA nom Abbie Cornish (Bright Star) - London Critics Circle Film Awards nom, Chicago Film Critics nom Audrey Tautou (Coco Before Chanel) - BAFTA nom
Currently I'm thinking that Emily Blunt might just snatch the fifth spot from Mirren. Taoutou would have had the chance too, had the film been a bit bigger.

I think it is between Emily Blunt and Helen Mirren. Though the former did a much better job as far my choice is considered the later has won once and it more liked by Academy.
Cornish has been sacked at most of the places and Audrey it BAFTA favorite. Ronan was good and did stand out among heavy weights but there are a lot of things going against Lovely Bones overall.

I'm going to have to go with Blunt. I think it's her or Mirren.

Cornish
I'm honestly convinced a film as romantic and vivid as the wonderful Bright Star must have fans and I'm hoping and praying they show themselves in this category on the morning of the nominations.

Hmm, I forgot Laurent, indeed, but I think she has really not shown up almost at all so far...so it's rather unlikely.

I've gone with Emily Blunt, but it's definitely her or Mirren, IMO.

I'm holding out hope for Ronan. She was fabulous.
