Yay! I knew $80+ million would happen.

I think it still has a shot at $100 million.

Yeah, $80m is a lock now, and it'll challenge Rookies and HP6 for the top 2 spots of 2009. If it drops week to week 30% for the next four weeks, it'll be at roughly $77m (after a $5m or so week). There'd certainly be enough room for it to reach $90m+.

My Projected Top 10 of 2009:

Rookies: The Movie - $90.51m
Avatar - $90.51m
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - $86m
Red Cliff Part II - $59.7m
Up - $55m
One Piece: Strong World - $55m
Michael Jackson's This Is It - $52.5m
Pokemon the 12th Movie - $50.2m
20th Century Boys: Chapter III - $46.7m

Evangelion 2.0 - $43m/2012/Nodame Cantabile Part I

BOLD no longer in theaters.

I think we still need to see another week or two for Avatar before knowing for sure if it'll beat Rookies yet or not.

Up and One Piece have been neck and neck for the past several weeks, with Up just slightly pulling ahead (like $1m) last weekend. I'd put it above One Piece, but Up was released a week earlier and might lose theaters (including it's 3D theaters) soon. It hasn't lost more than like 50 since it was released 6 weeks ago. And the No.10 spot is wide open, but I'd give say it'll most likely be Evangelion 2.0, followed by Nodame Cantabile, then 2012. But it's too close to say for sure.

Japan's yearly total should be made available pretty soon, but until then, some previous year totals to compare when when it's released.

Year/(1st Half (Overall Total)/(Local vs Foreign)/Top Distributor

2006 - 1st Half - $771.43m (Total - $1.91bn), ($1.012 vs $897.73) , Toho - $481.9m
2007 - 1st Half - $778.22m (Total - $1.87bn), ($889.65 vs $975.69), Toho - $559.94m
2008 - 1st Half - $812.15m (Total - $2.16bn) ($1.287 vs $877.17), Toho - $817.5m

2008 was the first year over $2b since 2004 when Hollywood began to hit it's slump, resulting in three consecutive drops, but 2006 was the year local films began to rise up (also the first year in 20 where they had over 50% of the market share) to begin balancing the drops.

2009's first half of the year (Jan-June) totaled $990.87m, Toho representing $323.33m of the total. And for Toho's yearly total, 2008's $817.5m is going to be iffy thanks to Ponyo. But, if I read correctly, as of November Toho was at about $792m. And they had two Dec. films. Nodame Cantabile grossed near $20m for the month, and Professor Layton earned about $3m for the month. Which, if $792m is accurate and I wasn't looking at an incorrect number, would put them just about even with 2008. Then there's a few holdovers nearing the end of their runs in early Dec. to factor in, so they may have set another company record. And that'd be incredible without a Ponyo. Though I suppose the increase in local films could offset the difference.

The growth Toho is having each year is very impressive, and 2010 will be a huge year for them. Bayside Shakedown 3 (probably a $150m+ total coming, if not more), new Ghibli, Pokemon 13, and Umizaru 3 (previous grossed 58m). Then there's the live action Spaceship Yamato they spent $30m (huge budget for a local film) on in December. I could see $900m for Toho.

Looking over 2010's schedule, Hollywood is going to have one terrible year.

Alice in Wonderland - Should do well. Burton and Depp are popular, the film is receiving a good amount of buzz already, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory grossed near $50m. So Alice should do just fine.

Clash of the Titans - Not sure, but I doubt it does anything special

How to Train Your Dragon - It'll be lucky to get $10m (KFP only managed mid teens), only Pixar does well when it comes to CGI.

Iron Man 2 - The original didn't even make $10m, and considering Transformers 2 dropped 35% from Transformers..yeah.

Shrek Forever After - Again, if it's not Pixar, Hollywood CGI just doesn't do well. Shrek the Third finished in the mid teens.

Prince of Persia - It might do decent business, but I can't see more than $35m or so.

Toy Story 3 - The first two are unknowns (box office), so it's a wild card.

Eclipse - The Twilight franchise barely registers here. New Moon barely matched Twilight's single digits.

The Last Airbender - I don't believe the show was too popular, and with the cast... no. I doubt it does Dragonball (massive anime/manga, 2nd all time, but thanks to the cast and filmakers, bombs away) numbers (under $10m).

Harry Potter 7: Part I - An easy lock to be the biggest Hollywood film, I suppose a range of $85-115.

The Green Hornet - Highly doubt it'll do much. It's not Spider-Man.

Narnia 3 - The original grossed about $60, while Prince Caspian only did half that. So $30m is probably a good guess.

And that's.....it. Hopefully something can breakout.

I was going to edit Inception in, but didn't considering TDK only grossed $15m (and Prestige under $5m). But, it could end up doing well.

Unlike most countries, it's had a very leggy run. Opening Day was only $1.1m, and last week it's total was $51.5m. I read it was going to be pulled after the holidays, but doesn't seem Sony is letting it go just yet, and I don't blame them. It should be near $53m now.

Inception just seems more up their alley than something like TDK.

I refuse to believe that there'll only be one $50+ million grosser from Hollywood. I suppose Toy Story 3 should do it too.

It could happen, 2008 only had one (Indy). But 2010 has more potential 50m hits however, (Alice, Toy Story 3, and let's go ahead and add Inception, but it'd be the first original Hollywood film to do so in the past 7 years). I'm not counting Da Vinci Code or Pixar because of the source material, they aren't exactly unknown.

2011 looks good though. Pirates could do $100m+ (Pirates 3 saw a 20% increase over Pirates 2) and is an early contender to win the year, Potter doing it's usual, and Tintin. Is The Hobbit 2011?

I forgot Avatar. I keep thinking it's 2010 also for some reason.

Still no weekend (9-10) numbers, but, it's being reported Avatar hit Y5b (about $54m) on the 13th. At this pace (adding about $3m Mon-Wed), it looks like it'll cross Y5.5b this weekend for $60m or slightly over, which will make it the No.3 film of 2009.

There was only one opener which made the top 10 this past weekend, but this coming weekend should have two make the top 10 for sure. Where the Wild Things Are (3-day opener) is getting fairly decent buzz, and Bandeiji (Bandage) is currently the second most searched for film on Eiga, behind Avatar. So the post-holiday competition is about to kick in.

Wild Things currenly has over 700 votes on Eiga, with a 5.0 avg. rating (though a B- user grade which isn't too great). There is a system the site uses where people vote (1-5) on how likely they are to see the film. So that's really solid before it opens, however, it's been released in many markets (if not all others) for months now and it's likely some voters have already seen it and are inflating it a little. It's the 5th most searched for film right now, which isn't great for an opener, but not bad. It should do decent. It's a 3-day opener though, so the weekend ranking will be a bit lower than it normally would be.

Bandage is Toho's (biggest distributor) first film of the year, and their films rarely miss the top 10. It also stars the lead singer of a popular boy band (Kat-Tun) who had a single out of the same name which did well (tie ins like that are much more prominent in Japan). It's the 2nd most searched for film at the moment, so it should do well this weekend. It's receiving positive reviews. It's not likely to debut at No.1 though because I think Avatar will be around $4m if my low $5m idea is right about it this past weekend, and a $4m+ debut would result in a total around $25/30m probably, and I doubt Toho has a film reach that level quite this early.

10. Tale of Ululu's Wonderful Forest, A Toho $408,851 4 324 $1,262 -35 $4,884,328

Ooohhh, very good sign for Avatar. The weekday=weekend pattern is a sign of strong legs to come. I'll want to see how much above $60m it is after this coming weekend, but I think it'll hit $100m now. I may change my mind if it's at $60/61 after Sunday, but if it's closer to $65m, it's gonna happen.

Nodame Cantabile Part I has a great hold and I'm confident it's going to pass 2012 now to make the Top 10 of 2009. Part II will be released this April.

Up and One Piece continue their big runs and are heading for over Y5b ($55m), or more.

Hehe, Sony expanded This Is It. If Michael keeps this up, it's going to prevent Up and/or One Piece from making the Top 5 for 2009.

Now that Avatar is heading towards Rookies and HP6: Note Rookies was a 2-day opener.

1st Weekend:

1. Rookies Toho $12,902,184 1 428 $30,145 0 $12,902,184
1. Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince Warner Bros Int'l $10,490,870 1 844 $12,430 0 $18,159,838
1. Avatar Fox Int'l $6,611,848 1 839 $7,881 0 $14,553,033

2nd Weekend:

1. Rookies Toho $10,666,002 2 428 $24,921 -17 $33,833,180
1. Avatar Fox Int'l $7,351,042 2 840 $8,751 11 $35,050,720
1. Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince Warner Bros Int'l $6,570,577 2 845 $7,776 -37 $37,002,454

3rd Weekend:

2. Rookies Toho $8,139,862 3 428 $19,018 -24 $49,460,113
1. Avatar Fox Int'l $6,897,825 3 840 $8,212 -6 $50,548,688
1. Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince Warner Bros Int'l $5,642,593 3 742 $7,605 -14 $50,156,545

4th Weekend:

1. Rookies Toho $6,432,946 4 428 $15,030 -21 $62,581,055
2. Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince Warner Bros Int'l $3,412,015 4 671 $5,085 -40 $57,884,412

Avatar will be above HP6 after it's 4th weekend (it's at 54m with 2 days before the weekend begins). so it's target is now Rookies. If it's above Rookies ($62.6m) after this Sunday, it's more than likely going to cross $100m because Rookies began to see only solid drops (-30/35%), nothing spectacular after it's 4th weekend. Rookies finished with $90.51m.

Japan's market seems too unpredictable but I too think it will top Rookies

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Jan. 9-10; Avatar vs Rookies
Avatar will need about a 18% week to week drop to stay even with Rookies after 4 weeks. Do remember though that Avatar will have a 3-day advantage when their totals are compared each weekend. So if we compare days in release, it would be something like... Rookies - $49.5m after 16 days vs Avatar - $50.5m after 19 days. It's fair to say Avatar, if you'd compare totals after day 16 or day 19, would still be a bit behind right now. Which is why it's going to need very strong legs now to counter Rookies bigger beginning. And it's quite possible because Rookies, while it held just fine, didn't have any exceptional holds the second half of it's run, dropping -30/35%.

If Avatar was at $54m on the 13th, we can probably assume $56m (mon-wed added $3m, so thur-fri would likely add around $2m) would be about the total right now leading into the weekend. Rookies 4th weekend was $6.4m, and for Avatar to match that, it'll need to see another single digit drop this weekend giving it about $62.5m, dead even with Rookies. The only other movie I found from the past few years that dropped single digits for consecutive weekends (or increased) was Ponyo (3rd weekend: -5%, 4th weekend: -2.7%, 5th weekend: +13%) though. Avatar will need something similar to happen.

It's still too early to say, but it's certainly possible for Avatar to end up grossing more than Rookies.

EDIT: thenumber had Avatar at $58m as of the 13th. They had Avatar at almost $43m as of the 6th last week, but I think they were too high because that would mean it only added $1m on the 7th and 8th combined, since it had to gross $8m from the 4th, 5th, and 6th combined to go from $35m to $43m. It didn't add up.

Just gotta wait and see what happens this weekend now.

First teaser of Bayside Shakedown 3, which is sure to be the biggest film this year. The original, released in 1998, made Y10.1b or $85m (Y10.1b this year would mean a gross of about $110m), and the sequel, released in 2003, became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in history, grossing Y17.4b or $165m (Y17.4b this year would equal a gross of $190m).

The third film again follows Shunsuke Aoshima (Yuji Oda), who’s recently been promoted to Chief Detective only to be saddled with eight difficult cases including murder, burglary, and a serial bomber. The film is set for release on July 3rd.

Bayside Shakedown 2 was also the only non-Miyazaki film in the Top 10 in Japan.

1 Spirited Away ¥30,400,000,000 Toho 2001
2 Titanic ¥25,900,000,000 Fox 1997

4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ¥20,300,000,000 Warner Bros. 2001
5 Princess Mononoke ¥19,323,000,000 Toho 1997

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010), Jan. 9-10; Avatar vs Rookies
Some big news regarding Avatar, and the other December films. December is not included in the yearly Box Office in Japan, well, what I mean to say is, it counts towards the new year (which explains why Wall-E has been included in yearly Top 10 lists for 2009, it was a Dec. 08 release). I've noticed this before with several films (such as I Am Legend being included in the 2008 chart, another Dec. release) but wasn't sure why.

So, Avatar actually isn't going to rank at all in the Top 10 of 2009. And Up, One Piece, and Nodame Cantabile won't be included in the yearly 2009 charts, but instead for 2010 with Avatar.

More information below, as well as the 2009 yearly total, finally. :D

Quote:
The top-grossing international territories in 2009 according to studio sources and Global Rentrak: Japan with $2.0 billion, up 3%; France with $1.8 billion up 6%; the U.K. with $1.7 billion, up 11%; Germany - $1.3 billion, up 18%; Spain with $965 million, up 9%; China with $910 million, up 44%; Italy with $891 million, up 5%; Australia -- $835 million, up 7%,; Russia -- $736 million, up 11%; Brazil -- $567 million, up 20%.

JAPAN

The Motion Picture Producers Assn. of Japan (Eiren) hasn't yet released official figures for the year, but unofficially it's looking like Hollywood fare only took three slots in the nation's top 10 grossers, and 14 of the top 20.

Japanese dramedy "Rookies," about a high school baseball team made up of delinquents, based on the popular Tokyo Broadcasting System show, came in at No. 1 with $92 million. TBS also produced the drama "Departures," which not only scooped a foreign-language Oscar but earned $67 million. Other highlights: China's "Red Cliff Part II," the second installment of John Woo's historical epic, grossed $60 million. The sequel was the top-grossing foreign film of the year, with $123 million worldwide.

Since Eiren calculates last year's results minus December 2009 but including December 2008, Japanese numbers for "Avatar" will not make the 2009 cut.

Top Hollywood pics in Japan included Warner Bros.' "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which ranked second with $87 million, Michael Jackson's "This Is It," with $48 million and Disney/Pixar's "Wall-E" with $43 million. Other titles seeing strong returns included Sony's "2012," Disney/Pixar's "Up" ($40 million) and Sony's "Angels and Demons" ($36 million).

*This Is It and Up's totals are higher, they just didn't include any days from 2010.

I'm a little surprised 2009 beat 2008 since 08 had the $172m Ponyo which grossed nearly double anything from 09. But with local films increasing each year, several of them together likely countered this.

2010 is going to be amazing. Dec. 09 was the biggest December in years (if not the biggest this decade, only 2004 which had Nov.'s Howl's Moving Castle grossing $10m each weekend could be higher), so Avatar's total (90-110 guess), along with Up (mid 50's), One Piece (mid 50's), and Nodame Cantabile (low 40's) are all going to be included in 2010's total. That's already over $250m for the year. Then there's new Ghibli, and of course Bayside Shakedown 3. I can see $2.5b or more easily. And Potter 7 too.

Maybe a Top 5 like this:

Bayside Shakedown 3 $155m (hoping for more considering the big increase part 2 saw over the original, and how the market is more favorable towards local films than it was in 2003).
Avatar $105m
Potter 7 $95m
The Borrower Arrietty $75m
Umizaru 3 $65m

Avatar - 4th weekend - $5.7m est (-17%), 65.4m est. total.

4th weekend was weaker than Rookies ($6.4m), but it's managed to pull ahead after 4 weeks ($62.6m vs $65.4m). I would say they are roughly the same since Avatar's total includes 3 extra days (including the $4m opening day).

Avatar is officially a 2010 film, so it won't be included in any 2009 charts (including it's Dec. gross), but it's certainly giving 2010 a very strong start and should give 2010 two $100m+ hits, or possibly even three if HP7 can manage it.

This Is It has earned Y5.05b or about $55m after 12 weeks. Sony's target was Y5b.

It seems Up added about Y375m or $4m for the week, so it should be around Y4.6b or $50m after 7 weeks. $60m isn't completely out of the question here yet.
