Post Re: 2009 Films In Review
End of the year blowout:

#1. The Hangover – 9.5 out of 10 – Unquestionably the best movie of the year, and the funniest movie I’ve seen in a few years. A great guy comedy (nobody learns any life lessons), and as a bonus it is set in the greatest place on Earth - Vegas. Loaded with memorable scenes and lines. (IMDB rating: 8.0, Metacritic: 73)

#2. Zombieland – 8.75 – Unique comedy with a great style. A little unevenness keeps it from reaching absolute greatness (there are a few slow parts), but a fun ride. (IMDB: 8.0, Metacritic: 73)

#3. Star Trek – 8.5 – Good sci-fi movie with engaging characters. Felt more Star Wars-ish (the good Star Wars) than Star Trek. Definitely a flick that non-Star Trek fans (me) can enjoy. I imagine that this is the best you could possibly make a Star Trek film for me. (IMDB: 8.2/143rd all time best, Metacritic: 83)

#4. Inglourious Basterds – 8.0 – Very well crafted movie with solid acting, engaging characters, and an interesting story (a fictitious take on events during WWII). A little more action and a little less talking would have really put the movie in rarified air, but it was still very good as it was. (IMDB: 8.5/68th all time best, Metacritic: 69)

#5. District 9 – 8.0 – A unique movie that was equal parts action, comedy, and drama. I like how it was shot with a gritty documentary vibe. The special effects were very well done in that they were realistic without feeling like your typical big budget alien sci-fi movie. I did think that there were a few plot points that seemed a little far fetched within the context of the story, and there were a handful of times the character’s actions didn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it was an enjoyable “what-if” scenario. (IMDB: 8.4/100th all time best, Metacritic: 81)

#6. Up! – 7.75 – Some good adult appeal, and a decent amount of depth for a CGI movie. The characters were unique for this type of movie, and for the most part they did not follow the standard formula. I thought the switch from heavier adult themes to wacky kids themes was jarring at times, but in all an enjoyable flick, and technically impressive. (IMDB: 8.5/70th all time best, Metacritic: 88)

#7. Sherlock Holmes – 7.75 - I liked the infusion of Guy Ritchie’s modern style in the Sherlock Holmes world. A lot more action than I thought there would be, and most of it was pretty creatively shot with great use of slow motion. Very solid on the acting front – Downey Jr is definitely on a roll, and it was one of Jude Law’s more fun performances. I did think Rachel McAdams was a bit wasted in her role, and the movie had some pacing issues, but all in all it was a fun movie. (IMDB: 7.7, Metacritic: 57)

#8. Land of the Lost – 7.75 – Not a high brow by any stretch, but Will Ferrel and Danny McBride make this easy and fun to watch. Definitely a movie where your enjoyment level will rest solely on whether you like Ferrel or not. I do. (IMDB: 5.4, Metacritic: 32)

#9. Crank: High Voltage – 7.75 – A completely crazy, off the wall action movie with a unique visual style. It has a very Grindhouse feel to it, and the makers embrace the wackiness and run with it. Not deep or realistic, but a really fun movie to watch and not quite like anything I’ve seen before. Definitely not a movie if you’re easily offended. Very much a “love it” or “hate it” movie. (IMDB: 6.5 , Metacritic: 41)

#10. The Proposal – 7.75 – It stuck to the basic romantic comedy formula, but was very watchable and entertaining. It was one of the best rom-coms in recent memory. Bullock and Reynolds really make the film work. (IMDB: 6.8, Metacritic: 48)

#11. Monsters vs. Aliens – 7.5 – The excellent voice cast (Seth Rogan, Will Arnett, Stephen Colbert, etc…) and fun characters make this an enjoyable movie. A lot of neat references to 50’s horror movies as well. As CGI movies go, it was not as meaty or deep as UP, but it provided more lighthearted entertainment. (IMDB: 6.8, Metacritic: 56)

#14. I Love You, Man – 7.25 – A semi-unique spin on the rom-com formula in that this is a bro-mantic comedy. A good cast (Paul Rudd and Jason Segel), and an easy to watch film with moments, but rarely laugh out loud funny. (IMDB: 7.4, Metacritic: 70)

#12. Night At The Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian – 7.25 –It’s what you look for in a big budget summer flick. – light and easy to watch. A very good cast help sell the movie (Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Owen Wilson, and Amy Adams). (IMDB: 6.0, Metacritic: 42)

#13. The Watchmen – 7 – Some great visuals, interesting characters, and some memorable moments. I also liked that it was aimed toward an adult audience, a rarity for superhero movies. However, it was far too long and the story was told very unevenly. With better editing and flow, this could have been something. (IMDB: 7.8, Metacritic: 56)

#15. Coraline – 7 – A little on the dark side, as is most of Tim Burton’s flicks, but very imaginative, a great visual style, and a good story. (IMDB: 7.9, Metacritic: 80)

#16. Terminator: Salvation – 6.75 – Some decent entertainment value with some good action, lots of FX, and a semi-interesting story at times. However, this was really an unnecessary sequel – this movie series should have ended with T2. Thankfully, Christian Bale (still doing his crappy Batman voice) was less the focus of the movie than I originally thought as I’m not a fan. (IMDB: 6.9, Metacritic: 52)

#17. X-Men Origins: Wolverine – 6.5 – A little heavy on the cheesy drama, and a little light on fun. Still, it was entertaining, held my interest throughout, and was an interesting look at the origin of Wolverine. (IMDB: 6.7, Metacritic: 43)

#18. Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder – 6.5 – Not the best direct to video Futurama movie, but still solid Futurama level entertainment. (IMDB: 7.2, Metacritic: N/A)

#19. Fired Up – 6.5 – Much better than I expected – it looks like one of those ultra crappy teen comedy cash grabs, but ended up being a lot better than those. It’s about as good as you could make a teen cheerleading comedy (which isn’t saying much). Definitely juvenile, and I don’t give a lick about cheerleading, but it had some funny moments and kept me watching it. (IMDB: 6.0, Metacritic: 31)

#20. Fanboys – 6.5 – Nothing too fantastic, but mildly enjoyable. Some good cameos and Star Wars stuff. Definitely a movie that will largely hinge on your level of Star Wars fandom. (IMDB: 6.8, Metacritic: 45)

#21. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – 6.25 – Paint by numbers Ice Age sequel. Mildly amusing in parts and non-offensive. (IMDB: 7.1, Metacritic: 50)

#22. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans – 6 – Series loses a ton without Kate Beckinsale in the lead role, but it does have some decent action and a tight run time, which makes it watchable. (IMDB: 6.5, Metacritic: 44)

#23. Angels and Demons – 6 – An adequate suspense/mystery movie that kept me interested for the bulk of the flick. The last part got too far fetched, and the pacing fell apart. One of those movies that was watchable at the time, but you can rip apart pretty easily afterwards. (IMDB: 6.7, Metacritic: 48)

#24. Observe and Report – 5.75 – Decent at times, but takes some very odd turns that are not always for the best. Requires massive suspensions of belief that are not always possible. Really odd that there were too mall cop movies this year, and one was far too slap-sticky (Paul Blart) and the other too dark at times (this one) (IMDB: 6.1, Metacritic: 54)

#25. G.I. Joe – 5.5 – Kind of what I expected in that it was big, loud, and stupid. Somewhat succeeded in holding my attention and may have been borderline enjoyable in a few parts, but the characters and plot just weren’t engaging on the whole. (IMDB: 5.8, Metacritic: 32)

#26. Pink Panther 2 – 5.25 – Better than the first, but still a few too many slapstick jokes that don’t work. John Cleese, Steve Martin, and Lilly Tomlin are all enjoyable actors, but nothing beats the classic Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers. This is a series that is probably best left alone. (IMDB: 5.2, Metacritic: 36)

#27. Bruno – 5 – Not as good as Borat – neither as funny or as interesting. A scene near the end was the closest thing the movie had to real social commentary, or a point. The rest was really over the top juvenile gross-out humor. Normally I’d be ok with that, but this just wasn’t that funny or interesting. (IMDB: 6.5, Metacritic: 54)

#28. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – 5 - It’s “Scrooged”, but not that funny or interesting. Pretty bland rom-com, but Jennifer Garner made it semi-watchable for me. (IMDB: 5.8, Metacritic: 34)

#29. Alien Trespass – 4.75 – A tongue in cheek homage to 50’s sci-fi movies. Unique, but Lost Skeleton of Cadavra had the same idea and was better and a lot funnier. This had some moments, but the 2nd half dragged a bit. (IMDB: 5.8, Metacritic: 48)

#30. Paul Blart: Mall Cop – 4.75– Sounds like a winning formula, as I like Kevin James and the “mall cop” premise would seem to have a lot of fodder for a comedy. However, it just didn’t work in execution. PB:MC just isn’t that funny, and it’s an extremely braid dead comedy. (IMDB: 5.3, Metacritic: 39)

#31. Confessions of a Shopoholic – 4.5 – Out of the trio of girly movies I saw this year (Bride Wars and He’s Just Not That Into You being the other two), this was probably the best by a hair, but really… that’s not a ringing endorsement. The lead character is a shallow and vapid idiot (a common theme among girl movies apparently), and her stupidity makes it hard to root for her. The movie feels like a low rent version of Bridget Jones Diary. Does have some decent actors, though… John Lithgow, John Goodman, Joan Cusack, and Isla Fisher all do what they can with the source material. (IMDB: 5.6, Metacritic: 38)

#32. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince – 4.5 - It’s a well made movie, and I’m sure it’s good if you’re on top of the Harry Potter series, the plotlines, and you like the characters. I rarely had any idea what was going on, nor did I care. So, it made this to be mostly a painful 2 ½ hour experience as the movie was a LOT of talk, and little action. (IMDB: 7.4, Metacritic: 78)

#33. He’s Just Not That Into You – 4.5 – It had some unlikable characters, a plethora of estrogen, and it was on the long side for a movie of its type (2 ½ hours). However, it did come together fairly well in the end, it had a few decent parts. The Affleck and Aniston story was the highlight of the movie, but that’s not saying a lot. (IMDB: 6.5, Metacritic: 47)

#34, Sunshine Cleaning – 4.5– A dramedy with too much uninteresting drama, and not enough comedy. Could have been a good concept (sisters that open a crime scene clean-up business) if done right. (IMDB: 7.1, Metacritic: 61)

#35. Year One – 4.25 – Good cast, really poor material. Painfully unfunny at times, and rather boring overall. The quality cast kept me watching and earn it a few extra points than it deserves. (IMDB: 5.1, Metacritic: 34)

#36. Inkheart – 4.25 – Could have been an interesting concept (books coming to life when read), but never really clicked like it should have. Thought it was far too dark for the target audience as well. Just not a fun movie. (IMDB: 6.1 , Metacritic: 47)

#37. Adventureland – 4.25 - A teen “coming of age” flick that felt slow and pointless most of the time. It just wasn’t that funny, and I felt very detached from the characters. (IMDB: 7.3, Metacritic: 76)

#38. Hotel For Dogs – 4.25 – Some cute dogs that do a few neat pet tricks. A little far fetched, even for a kids movie. Plus it’s one of those movies where every kid is a genius that knows everything, and every adult is a bumbling idiot. (IMDB: 4.7, Metacritic: 51)

#39. New In Town – 4 – Paint by numbers romantic comedy, and pretty bland. Didn’t think the characters were all that engaging. (IMDB: 5.4, Metacritic: 29)

#40. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen – 2 – Horrible movie on just about every level. Soulless and weightless movie with a ridiculous plot and unlikable characters. Tough to think of any positives, except that a few of the FX looked nice. It probably could’ve been trimmed down to a good 30 second car or Army commercial, but even that is questionable. I’m also fairly certain that Megan Fox was actually a cardboard cutout and never was really in the movie. (IMDB: 6.1, Metacritic: 35)

#41. Bride Wars – 1 – Horribly unlikable characters, mean spirited, joyless, unmemorable, demeaning to women… just a terrible movie. One of the worst that I have seen without three silhouettes sitting in front of the movie poking fun of it. (IMDB: 5.0, Metacritic: 24)
