I personally think the BP is down to three films: Precious, Up in the Air, and Avatar.

And let's face it: George Clooney dramedy with a Message > ghetto drama starring Mo'Nique and hard science fiction film with a cast of blue aliens

Precious is a much bigger message movie than Up In The Air. And not a comedy, at least, not an intentional one.

Time Out New York dragged down Precious' MC average with a 40, and they did the same to Up in the Air. Another 40 there, and Up in the Air's average score is now 73. In fact, it no longer has the review advantage on Precious, and their box office potential look similar too.

Based on the trailers, I'm still not convinced Up in the Air can be a possible BP or BD winner. Particularly for BD, this just does not seem like the type of film that can win that category.

I see BP/BD as:

Precious - 90%
Anything else - 10%

Maybe 90 is too low.

ok maybe not

Just came back from an advanced screening of Nine. The previews got me reaaaaally excited, and unfortunately I was underwhelmed. I liked it, but it's just really lackluster and I just don't see it getting major nods.

Marion Cotillard is the only thing that really deserves notice. If she's going for supporting actress (personally I would put her here, she doesn't have enough screen time for lead IMO...), she would be my personal pick, even over Mo'Nique.

I haven't said this, mostly because I just can't invest my time in the awards anymore, but I don't care for having 10 films nominated. The best thing the academy ever did was trim the fat back in the 40's. It makes it non exclusive and diminishes the accomplishment to have so many. If 10 movies get nominated, why not 10 directors? Actors? Actresses? etc...

If any category needs more nominations in this day and age, it's special effects.

I have a hard time seeing absolute locks in anything but the supporting categories. The Oscars are a whopping 12 weeks away. There are 10 best picture nominees and a delayed Oscars next year. That will mess up a lot along the way. I could see some major surprises this year and snubs. 10 spots for films campaigning with FYC campaigns? It might really hurt some FYC ads for smaller roles and films. It will be a messy campaign season!

having now seen Up in the Air, it's a very good and obviously relevant film, but... it doesn't feel like Best Picture to me. Not in a bad way, just that it lacks the sweep that the Academy tends to go for.

I dunno... I should probably wait until I see Avatar, but with its massive box office performance now underway, I'm really starting to feel like it has a noteworthy chance. Hurt Locker wasn't big enough, Precious got too much of a backlash, Basterds is too Tarantino, and Up in the Air just doesn't have enough weight to carry it through these next few months, I'm thinking. Avatar is the only one of the major contenders with rising stock at the minute.

If Avatar manages to get a Screenplay nomination, it has a chance to win Best Picture. Otherwise, it's far too genre-y.

Really, Inglourious Basterds might be #2 for the win right now.

Titanic didn't get a screenplay nomination either, but I agree, a nomination as best picture is assured, a win very unlikely (even with a screenplay nom).

but i would say that in both cases, the films were most heavily criticized for their scripts, but everything else about the movie was so positively received that this problem was overwhelmed.

that said, Avatar isn't my #1 at the moment; in fact, I'm having a lot of trouble ordering my top four (Avatar, Basterds, Hurt Locker, Up in the Air).

If Avatar becomes a WOM monster and grosses well north of 400 million, it might have a chance. It needs a "cultural phenomenom" aspect to win.

It's kind of stupid that there is a different category for animated films, as UP is the most compelling nominee for best picture. Great reviews, great audience reception, great B.O run. It's also artsy, emotional, poignant, and heavy on message.
