 Top 30 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009) (#1!!!)
So I was going to put my choices for the top 10 box office runs of the decade (2000 - 2009) up, but thought it would be more fun if we have a bigger vote. If everyone can send me your top 10 box office runs of the decade, and I'll come up with a top 25 list based on the total points that a film has.
So say you submit this:
1 Movie A 2 Movie B 3 Movie C etc.
Movie A will get 10 points. Movie B will get 9 points, etc for the entire top 10 that you send. Then I'll come up with a top 25 list.
If you could send me your top 10 box office runs of the decade by March 14th, 2010 at 11:59 pm (EST), I can quickly tabulate them for the following weekend. Please PM me and do not put your rankings in this topic!
I'll only tabulate the results if I get 10 or more entries, so make sure you vote!
Any film can be chosen. It just needs to have been released in theaters domestically sometime from 2000 - 2009. However, I'm not counting any films that opened in limited release in 1999, but opened wide in 2000.
In addition, when I'm revealing some of the top films, I'd be interesting in including some commentary from different people as well. So feel free for your top films to write your reasons why you chose certain films, though this isn't necessary.
Ex. #1 Movie A - I put movie A at #1 because...
Let me know if you have any questions.
Rankings:
#29 Wedding Crashers (tie) 1 point #29 Matchpoint (tie) 1 point #26 Borat (tie) 2 points #26 Lost In Translation (tie) 2 points #26 Finding Nemo (tie) 2 points
#25 28 Days Later 3 points #24 The Perfect Storm 4 points #22 Spy Kids (3D) (tie) 5 points #22 National Treasure (tie) 5 points #21 The Exorcist (Re-issue) 6 points
#18 Taken (tie) 7 points #18 The Bourne Supremacy (tie) 7 points #18 Shrek (tie) 7 points #16 Traffic (tie) 8 points #16 The Others (tie) 8 points
#15 Twilight 9 points #14 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 16 points #13 The Ring 26 points #12 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 27 points #11 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 31 points #10 The Hangover 32 points #9 Fahrenheit 9/11 36 points #8 The Blind Side 50 points #6 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 81 points (Tie) #6 Shrek 2 81 points (Tie) #5 The Dark Knight 98 points #4 Spider-man 119 points #3 The Passion of the Christ 122 points #2 Avatar 144 points #1 My Big Fat Greek Wedding 160 points

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009): Vote!!
BRILLIANT IDEA!!!!
However...I suggest that maybe we push it back? Afterall, a film such as The Blind Slide, which could make list, is barely done its run. Plus, Avatar is still a potential wild-card. I think maybe we make the list come mid-January.

Rescheduled! I'll bring this up in the first week of January and give a week to vote then. In the mean time, send me any suggestions you have.

I feel this. I will def. be a part of it though #1 is kind of obvious.

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
Yeah, No. 1 is obvious, but runner-up is very much debatable and going to be fun. The interesting question will be how high people will place the more recent films which are fresher in our mind (TDK, Hangover, or even The Blind Side) comparing to the older classic runs (Spider-Man, POTC, and the other POTC).

spidey and potc 1 are top 10 easily, potc is prob. top 5 considering the situation. It was ignored all summer as the media hyped matrix, hulk, t3, ect.

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
I'm not sure if #1 is obvious just yet. If people consistently put a film at #3 on their lists, and there is variability in the top 2 spots, it could still make it to the top spot! Though what I'll do is I'll rank the top 25 based on points, then include separate rankings such as "films with most top 3 finishes, etc to give a bigger picture."

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
The thing is this is not a "my favorite" list, where people could do some strategy stuff and try to promote his/her favorite while leaving the more well-known ones down a little bit. Hopefully people will treat this as more of an objective list, where in that case there really should be no debate on which film has the most impressive run of the decade. Lecter settled that argument pretty well a year ago.

Any thoughts on if I should give bonus points for #1 spots? Ex. 10 points for a top ranked film + 3 for ranking at #1?

Number 1 is obvious. You can always bring up the old BOM thread but the average prediction 2 months before the movie opened was around 25 million but ended up grossing 14 times much more than that

Passion of the Christ??
Yeah many of us try to forget that film existed, but its Box office run was huge and something has to be noted.
It adjusts to what over 430 million now I guess.
Think about the only bigger films this decade where...
Spiderman 1 and 2 Shrek 2 DMC ROTK ROTS TF2 TDK
All of those films were all sequels apart from Spiderman 1.

Yeah, POTC is very much a worthy No. 2.

I am not sure if you are referring to TDK or MBFGW as the "obvious #1".

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
I personally won't put MBFGW #1 since I don't consider "Most Surprising" to be equivalent to Top 25 Box Office Runs. Given the fanboyism for TDK and the number of records it set, I think #1 spot may be a more contested race than anticipated.

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
That's the fun thing about lists like these, people have so many different opinions so the results could be surprising.
For instance, while Paranormal Activity had a sensational run and made $107 m on a $15,000 budget, I'm not set on automatically including it in my personal top 5 list, because it felt too much like a carbon copy of The Blair Witch Project in terms of how they went about it. But on paper to a studio, it would probably be one of the best performances that they ever saw.
But I would completely understand if someone did choose to put it high up on their list.

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
MBFGW is simply out of all realms.
It is not only surprising. Its $200+ million gross is surprising. But its run itself is terrific too. No way anything qualifies above it this decade.

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
Alex has an interesting point. this is not the most surprising list. TDK was expected to do very well (many had it 350M+ months before release), BJ started 400M+ club which had quite a few members. But it stunned everyone when it broke midnight/OD/OW records plus its stunning sunday/monday drops. And it has a unique record among successful franchises with more than couple of films in that it beat all previous batman adjusted and Batman 89 had a pretty impressive run(OW record by a big margin plus a solid multiplier). It also beat all spider-man movies adjusted and it was always believed spider-man was way more popular than batman because it was more kid friendly. I doubt any future spider-man will beat the adjusted gross of spider-man 1.
That said I would not put it above MBFGW or even Passion. But TDK probably deserves Top 5 ahead of Spider-man 1.

I don't think so. Spider-Man is pretty much the same as The Dark Knight it just preceded it by six years and wasn't a sequel.

Re: Top 25 Box Office Runs of the Decade (2000 - 2009)
I am wondering if we should do Top 5/Top 10 runs for every year in the decade(couple every week), so that we build a big nomination list that could be used by everyone to use as a reference for their top 10 in around 5 weeks time.

That had tremendous hype without being a sequel. So I dont see not being a sequel is a big deal for something with built in fan base. Similar to HP. That is why 1st movie is the biggest grosser for both SM/HP. While TDK beat both batman 89 and Spider-man 1 ADJUSTED.

Of course Spider-Man was well-known but its performance set the standard. I don't think TDK's $150+ millio opening is as impressive as Spidey's $114.8 million start.

I'm leaving this fairly open to people's own interpretation of their Top 10 Box Office Runs of the Decade.
To increase discussion on the eventual list, when the time comes, do feel free to PM me any explanation you have for your choices as well, and I can incorporate those different comments into the Top 25 list...
